he scoffed only slightly before the male placed the cigarette between his lips. “wanna share? i’ve been here my whole life.” why he decided to go to college close to home was strictly beyond him.

“your whole life, huh?” he quirked an eyebrow at the male. “your poor thing, you might need this more than i do.” he plucked the cig out of his lips, smoke escaping from between his lips before he offered it to the other. “any tips on how to survive it?”

“ oh come on — it’s not that bad here. in fact, you probably haven’t been outside since you got here. san diego is super fun ! ” she smiled widely, only her smile fading a little as she noticed the cigarette in between his lips. taking a step back as she was scared it wasn’t going to only affect her but also the little baby growing inside of her, which - she still kept denying. 

she wasn’t wrong. ever since he had gotten there, he hadn’t had had much time to explore in his own, it seemed like the ortegas were always too scared that he and his sister would disappear out of thin air. and he would if he could. “i don’t see what’s so good about it,” he shrugged, bringing the cigarette back to his lips. “this place has nothing on vegas.”

maria didn’t like it when other people criticized san diego like this, this was her home and she had never known a place as great as this. “hey, it’s not that bad! i mean, at least we have disneyland only an hour away from here.” she admitted, fumbling with her camera.

“yeah, you guys have the shitty disney. who cares? everyone knows disney world is much better anyway.” not that he had ever been to either, but if it would help his dislike toward this city, he’d take it. “are you part of the tourist department or something?”

julian chuckled, shaking his head. “nah, man. they deserve that for being so damn excited this early in the morning. they’re probably not even human, fucking droids everywhere you look.”

“i’m sorry you’re having a rough summer but you shouldn’t be smoking a cigarette,” nadia had a horrible habit of trying to make sure all the kids in town weren’t smoking, or getting in trouble. “why are you having such a rough summer? san diego is beautiful.”

the boy rolled his eyes, not at all in the mood to get lectured by some stranger. he already had enough of that in the house he was being forced to live in. “shouldn’t be doing a lot of things, but none of them is gonna stop,” he shrugged. “maybe ‘cause i was forced to leave my home and brought here? just a thought.” it wasn’t the woman's fault, she didn’t even know about his life, but it didn’t mean the teen wouldn’t lash at every change he got.

“yes, it’s true,” piper had no problem using that creepy commercial any chance she got..the only problem was it never seemed to work. “do they even make dog food commercials? i’ve literally never seen one. what are you saying i do all the work, and you get half the pleasure? lazy.”

“‘course they do. everyone knows dogs make more money than cats.” or at least dog scams made more money than cat scams, though he had never tried the later. “that’s exactly what i’m saying and i’m disappointed that you’re surprised, pipe,” he smirked.

“my shitty tiny friends?” that was certainly not how he’d describe any of his friends, but this girl didn’t know what she was talking about and he couldn't be bothered correcting her. at least not with the promise of champagne and lawbreaking. “sure, tyler,” he scoffed. rich kids always enjoyed playing tough.

“nothing’s bad enough that can’t be worse, yeah?” he smirked at the girl. at least the blonde isn’t one of the brainless that will try to tell him san diego is the best place on earth. she had scored some points already. “have you always been here? any soul left there?” the question was spoken in a playful tone as the boy noded. “for a kindred spirirt, always.” he took the pack from his pocket, offering one to the girl.

phoebe couldn’t help but laugh as she heard what he said.”why would i want to poison you?”she questioned, an eyebrow raised slightly.”i can say it’s not poisoned at all.  i mean i ate half..so if it was i’d be dead, wouldn’t i?”

“how should i know? maybe you just don’t like my hair,” he shrugged playfully. “or you’ve eaten the part without the poison.” but now he was just messing around.

“they’re kids, they don’t need a fucking scissor to hurt themselves,” he rolled his eyes. didn’t kids fall more than walk usually? “that has to be one of the most ridiculous discourses i’ve had to hear in this world of everyone has something to say.”

the way he spoke to her made her heart wrench in her chest; she wanted him to come into their home feeling welcomed and like he had a real family to be around, but she knew that was optimistic. they were strangers to him, he didn’t remember her. he wasn’t sitting around waiting for his mother and father to come rescue him and bring him back home the past fourteen years like she was. she had to be stronger for the both of them. “ you are home, sweetie. “ she responded lightly; her fingers played with the wedding ring on her hand out of a habit when she was nervous. “ i guess not, but i do know something that isn’t your strong suit either and that would be avoiding sweets. you used to love them when you were little. your father and i would’ve fed them to you everyday if it wasn’t so unhealthy. you sure knew how to make a fuss too. “ as the memories came flooding back she found herself genuinely smiling for once. 

that was exactly why he tried to stay away from the house as much as possible, and when the woman’s hawk eye wouldn’t allow that he would just stay inside the room they had given him -- he wanted to avoid encounters like this as much as possible. the woman’s words did nothing to settle his temper, it anything it only made him angrier. “no, my home is back in vegas with my sister and my mother,” he retorted. this all felt like a horrible nightmare, but he wasn't naive enough to think that that was the case. “you know, the place you took me from.” the accusation in his tone was clear as it was his displeasure over the whole situation. “yeah? well, i’m not three anymore.” he hated how right the woman was. despite not truly remembering her or her husband or this life that was supposedly his, she was right, he had always had the sweetest tooth. “you don’t know me.” and he needed that, he needed her to not know anything about him so his life -- the one he remembered -- wouldn’t feel like some elaborate lie.

san diego was not vegas and in the short time he had been there, julian was already done with the place. “with every second i spend in this city i feel my soul dying a little. i can’t believe i’ve been made to waste my summer like this,” he mused in annoyance, placing a cigarette between his lips and inhaling. maybe it would help him relax a bit.

megan stopped writing and looked up slowly when she felt another persons presence. “yeees?”

“just wanted to make sure you were still alive, to be honest,” he shrugged. “must be writing the next best selling book the way you’re going.”

half a muffin left by her side, eyes reading the book in her hand, before she took a sip of her coffee, eyes looking up at the other who was sat opposite her. pushing the plate forward, she offered a small smile on her lips.”you can have the rest if you want. i’m stuffed and it will only go to waste.”

he was a little surprised by the offer, but with a shrug of his shoulders, he pulled the plate closer. “never liked wasting food.” and it was true. “not poisoned, is it?” he asked quickly, not hiding a smirk.

“ would you like to try a dessert ? “ bella asked, smiling warmly; she was putting on a brave face & trying her best to make her home seem normal, like nothing bad had ever happened to them, now that her children were back home. she wished it would feel that way, but she felt more on edge now than ever. in the last two hours she’d baked cookies, pudding cups and brownies; baking was a quick way to ease her stress and a proven distraction from pouring herself a glass of alcohol. “ i can’t promise they’ll be any good. i’ll be honest; i’ve been told before i should stay as far away from the kitchen as possible, blame it on the way they make recipes overly complicated these days, but maybe after a decade apart i’ve finally made something right. “

there were plenty of places where julian wouldn’t want to be, but the ortega house had to be at the very top. he hated everything about it. he hated that he couldn’t be with his mother, hated that he had all these strangers wanting to play family, hated how constricted he felt there. he didn’t fit in, he never would. “no, i’m fine. i’d take a ticket home, though,” he replied rather dryly. usually, julian would be eating his own weight in food if he could, but he was too petty to actually accept anything from the woman. the teen wanted -- needed -- her to know just how unhappy he was. “i guess staying out of shit you shouldn’t meddle with isn’t your strongest suit, right?”
