reid flipped pages until he got to the page, eyes grazing over the question. he couldn’t even begin to understand the equation even if it was correct, but it was much better than having to talk about his love life. he rested his hand over her notes and pulled them closer to him, feigning interest in the problem. “ it’s nothing, ” he said, looking at her. “ it’s not like we talk about that kinda stuff, anyway. we talk equations, sterling. and most people would’ve stuck on the whole ‘i’ll be your wingman’ thing versus the ‘sorry, i can’t sleep with you’ thing. i just forgot you weren’t a normal human, that was my bad. ”

“love’s a chemical reaction, i’m pretty sure,” she spoke, leaning back in her chair as she watched him flip through the pages of her well-used textbook, her fingers tapping against the edge of the table. “yeah, but it’s not like you talk to anyone about that stuff. no offence, but emotionally, you’re, like, all bolted doors and barred windows.” she paused for a second, a short laugh leaving her lips in response to his comment. “oh, come on. can you really fault me? by slipping up you’ve essentially given me a non-maths equation to solve, and if you thought i wouldn’t fucking latch onto that, you really need to re-work your tactics.”

following his gesture, the brunette slumped down into the passenger seat of her flatmate’s car, before fastening her seat belt in one semi-swift motion (it took a little bit of yanking for it to start extending to begin with). looking over at him, she sighed for what seemed like the nine millionth time that afternoon. “and where would we do that? it’s way too cold outside, and our flat doesn’t exactly scream sex appeal. unless dirty laundry is your kink, i suppose.”

“... have you ever spoken to any of your lecturers?” she questioned, yet again shaking her head as if to underline her own point. “doubt it’s gonna go down well if i waltz into their office hours and demand them to fix some petty mistake.” she’d learnt the hard way that sometimes, when it came to authority, it was much better to keep your mouth shut. “mhm, yeah, here’s the thing -  i got what your dad does for a living the first time you brought it up, mate.”
