Before the Coffee Gets Cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi [Book Review]
The book takes place in the café where the four different visitors hope to travel back in time to meet their loved ones. Travelling back in time isn’t as simple as ABC as there are a set of rules that need to be followed and conditions that need to be met. Despite what many people think, travelling back in time will not change the present because what has happened, has happened which is why a lot of people often give up when they hear this.
•
Among all of the rules, the most important one is, the coffee needs to be drunk before it gets cold or else the person would be trapped in the past forever and they would become a ghost in the present, bound to sit at the seat in the cafe for eternity or at least until someone repeats the same mistake as the previous occupant and takes over.
•
The book is split into four different parts which take place in chronological order: a lover who wants to see her boyfriend once more before he leaves for work abroad, a man suffering from Alzheimer who wants to give a letter to his wife but never dares to do so in the past, a lady who wants to meet her dead sister one last time and a mother who wants to meet her child from the future that she thinks she won’t have a chance to meet.
•
The book is made up of different characters with very different personalities yet when they are all together, it’s a wonderful mix of harmony and chaos. The book wasn’t written in a plot-driven style, rather it focuses more on the character’s development and their thoughts. If your focus was to find out more on the components of time travelling, I am afraid this book won’t be suitable for you because the book focuses more on the character’s itself.

“We all need someone to look at us. we can be divided into four categories according to the kind of look we wish to live under. the first category longs for the look of an infinite number of anonymous eyes, in other words, for the look of the public. the second category is made up of people who have a vital need to be looked at by many known eyes. they are the tireless hosts of cocktail parties and dinners. they are happier than the people in the first category, who, when they lose their public, have the feeling that the lights have gone out in the room of their lives. this happens to nearly all of them sooner or later. people in the second category, on the other hand, can always come up with the eyes they need. then there is the third category, the category of people who need to be constantly before the eyes of the person they love. their situation is as dangerous as the situation of people in the first category. one day the eyes of their beloved will close, and the room will go dark. and finally there is the fourth category, the rarest, the category of people who live in the imaginary eyes of those who are not present. they are the dreamers.”

“One night there was a huge storm and he didn’t come home from work. I had told him to sleep at the shop, but he wouldn’t listen to me. And by nighttime he still hadn’t arrived. The trains shut down. The phones stopped working. I sat by the window all night with my children. I asked everyone who walked by if they’d seen him. The next morning I went to the temple and said so many prayers. Then at 11 AM, I heard the bell ring. And there he was. He was soaking wet and completely covered in mud. He smelled awful. I started crying so hard. I made him some hot tea and a little food, and he went straight to bed. When he finally woke up, I informed him that he would be moving his shop next to the house.” (Mumbai, India)
This is LOVE ❤️❤️
In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.
