fire-birds:
In her eyes, itâs amazing the different way light will reflect off the waterâthe columns of water that splash out from the fountain in front of them, the ripples in the pool at the bottom. Itâs a perfect backlight, Nerissaâs shadow wobbling along in front as Li Hua comes up as sheâs called too, reaching for the bottle and tipping the rest of the bottle of champagne down her throat before letting it roll to the ground below them. Everything brighter, the sound of the fountain further off when in reality they were only a few feet away. âWe donât have a camera or a phone though!â She laughs, almost starting to yell, hand catching Nerissaâs arm. âIâll show you something really pretty, are you ready?â Even in her drunken haze, she reels at the thought of herself a beautiful, thinking instead that the fire of her phoenix form as something so much more exciting, almost majestic, the ways embers will catch in the wind, the view she has from above.
In a moment, she is engulfed in flames and transforms into her phoenix to do a quick, lush twirl in the air before landing again, talons back to legs, wings disappearing, fire receding beneath her skinâdoesnât know if anyone is looking, doesnât care if anyone is anyways.
Of all the sights sheâs seen tonight, Li Hua in flight is - without a doubt - the most beautiful of them all. Although her body is rooted to the ground, her eyes follow the phoenix in the sky, spirit soaring alongside her comradeâs. Only one of them flies, but Nerissa feels weightless too. Breathless, sheâs mesmerized at her display - the sheer brazeness of it, the way Li Hua doesnât care who might be watching...how they can relish in their own beauty. If sober, melancholy might have struck - but she isnât - and so Nerissa laughs instead, hollering to the heavens. As she lands, Nerissa rushes forward, gushing into a breathless sigh. âOh - youâre beautiful. Both forms. You need a pay raise.â For the girl matches the beast. And her smile...it could make the stars shine. One eye lands on the fountain and she meets Li Huaâs eyes, bursting into disbelieving laughter. âNo way! Iâd say Iâm like...three drinks away from choosing to flop the way home. They might eat me. People still eat Seals you know...and well...thereâs not much difference.â She swings the empty bottle in her hand.Â
