                   INTAN + THE KUAT DRIVE YARDS

                   As the daughter of the current leader of the Kuat family who also heads the Kuat Drive Yards,  the importance of the shipyards is something she cannot remember not understanding.     While there isn't a requirement for the head of the company to be the head of the House of Kuat,  it has been for generations,  and the expectation for Intan is someday she will take her father's place.      Nothing about this is considered unusual.     In fact,  her becoming the head will return it to the norm.     Kuat is a traditionally matriarchal society so having two generations of men in a row,  three men in total,  being in control of the company is highly unusual.

                   From a very early age,  Intan has been groomed to take over the Kuat Drive Yards.     Along with all the usual aspects of her education,  she was schooled in the hierarchy of the company as well as the first concepts of how the technology they use works starting about as early as a child could comprehend.     With the ship yards encircling the planet,  she spent many a day following her father about or being placed in one section or another to be taught about their processes.     By the time she begins to represent the company on her father's behalf as a teen,  Intan knows the orbital ring about as well as anyone can and she can recite the departments and their purposes by heart.

                   Her most important role for the time being is as a representative of her father's interests,  especially the more clandestine ones.     It is far harder for the 'Head Technician' of the Kuat to slip away to solidify deals or to say, smooth over issues that require the top levels of involvement on a secret ship yard in the unknown regions.     His daughter,  however,  has far more freedom to come and go without as many eyes following her.    Naturally,  she also is visibly involved in the workings of the Drive Yards,  from taking over her father's office when he is gone to stepping in to help if extra brainpower is required.     She spends nearly as many days on the orbital ring as on the planet below.      This is purposeful,  as her father wants both the galaxy and the management to become familiar with her and how she works,  to innately accept her as his heir as much as train her to become it.

                   And it isn't simply clandestine missions she'd go on,  but also more public ones.     From backing to even at one point temporarily taking the place of the planet's senator to being involved with negotiations with other companies, suppliers,  and the New Republic,  Intan would be considered the Drive Yards' diplomatic and political representative as much as her father would be.      Underestimate her and her power there at your peril.

                   That being said,  she doesn't have the technological interest and talent that her father has,  so she is very content with her place being more of a diplomat than a CEO.      If she feels inadequate in any way,  it's in the fact that she will be more a manager than a part of the innovation.     She certainly hopes that her time to truly lead won't come any day soon.

                   Intan is almost the opposite of Satine in this question,  which I find utterly fascinating.     I think,  as many cultures do with strict class structures,  Kuat very much incorporates the idea of fate into their personal mythology and ethos.     Fate has treated them very well as a culture and equally so, things being fated remains,  as always,  an excellent mechanism for control.

                   With this in the background,  fate is a concept Intan grows up very immersed in.      I can imagine her being told that she was fated to be born in such a highly esteemed family,  that she was fated to lead it,  destiny this, destiny that.     That those below her were meant to be there,  that equality is a myth or why would these things exist.      Fate is absolutely used in her life to justify some of the more unsavory aspects,  from how others are treated to the fact that she cannot call the woman who birthed her 'mother'.     I definitely think she would believe that while one can't be idle,  that paths are decided,  that things are as they are meant to be.     Why wouldn't she?     Her life is fairly incredible after all.     She has very little reason to want to change it.

                   Fate is even something she uses to comfort herself when she feels alone.     Her father feeling distant because like so many other Kuati of his status,  he wasn't raised any closer to his family members other than his older brother and wasn't exposed to small children?      It doesn't matter.     She was fated to be his daughter and that means so much more.     To an extent,  especially when very young,  she thinks that this is normal... that she's just greedy for attention.

                   Luck,  of course then,  is something she rejects.     Life is purposeful;  it isn't something built on chance.      Luck is a myth to her,  something people say to comfort themselves when life doesn't go the way they want,  that maybe someday they'll be lucky.      Everyone needs to fulfill their duty,  not focus on silly things such as luck.     Removed from her gilded world,  I think her opinions might change,  especially if she talked to more people,  but at least as it stands,  she very much doesn't believe in luck.    Other potential uses of it,  like in gambling,  she just says are mathematical odds,  not some force in the universe intervening on their behalf.    Again with the 'she really believes in the structure of things.'    It's an interesting take, and I would love to see her world shaken in either aspect.

                   The reason why is probably horribly cliche,  but Mon absolutely does know what love should be.     I think she finds it in her daughter,  a sense of something that grows as she gets further and further along but it's in all its glorious colors when she holds her baby for the first time.      For better or worse,  I do think that is the first time she feels love the way its described by Bail and Breha or by Padmé about her family:  pure,  unconditional,  unwavering.     She'll cling to that feeling for the rest of her life,  let it sustain her when Leida hates her,  chase after it in the romantic sense when things are good with Perrin.

                   But as a child?     No,  love is conditional.     It's solely situational and based on how much of herself is she willing to sacrifice for that person.     It's good grades and high polling numbers and how well she speaks and how obedient she is.     It's how much of herself she pours into Perrin,  how unlike her quiet self she chooses to be.     If she chooses to stop,  be still,  not do what is asked of her,  that love evaporates.

                   And the horrible thing is...  she knows it can be different.     Maybe not before she's a senator,  but not long after,  she makes friends with people who do have that love in their life.     It's astounding to her and heartbreaking and it is everything she ever read about in books that she thought might just be poetic nonsense.      It's everything her secretly romantic heart has been craving all this time.     And she doesn't have it.     It stays just out of reach.     When she finally does have it with Leida,  she has it for such a short amount of time by comparison before her daughter and her begin to grow apart.    She knows it is achievable.     She even knows it is sustainable,  that it doesn't have to be something fleeting.    She fully believes in soulmates too because of it,  because of Bail and Breha at the very least.     Frankly,  she'd jest that how could anyone not believe in that after meeting them.     

                   But she doesn't have any of it,  not for long,  not how she hoped.

                   It is part of her sacrifice.

                   I'll say off the bat that she doesn't believe in fate really.   It's not a terribly Mandalorian concept where things are very much about what you make of them and how you approach the world changes where you go within it.     What she does believe in kinda skirts fate but it is that sometimes,  but not always,  you can't change the outcome of something once it has started.     Now,  that start might seem to be happening at the moment,  but it actually was started by a chain of events years ago that you might not have been even involved in at all.    Thus,  her accepting the storming of the palace by Death Watch during the Clone Wars,  when she might have,  under other circumstances,  fought that in some way.     The people accepted them and she could see the path that had brought all of them here.    She knew she wasn't going to be able to alter what was coming and in trying,  she would only get more people killed.     So,  for better or worse,  she just waited for them to come and arrest her.

                   She does,  to an extent,  believe in soulmates,  which I think is an interesting contradiction,  though she thinks of them more as there are so many people in the galaxy,  the chance of there not being at least a few beings who make your heart sing and feel one with theirs is very slim.

                   LUCK THOUGH.     LUCK AND HER ARE BEST BUDS.     Luck is definitely a concept she's always heard tossed about,  but not very much in a positive context.  I don't think Mandalorians always see luck as a good thing,  that it can also be bad.   Such as,  one could say she was lucky to survive the attack on her home that killed her father...  she doesn't think of that as a positive thing.    Her mother certainly doesn't and wishes she had died fighting with her husband,  especially since she worries now without him,  her children will end up in far more horrible positions than being shot.

                   This then later ties in beautifully with her being introduced to the Force by Obi and Qui-gon.   To her,  as it really is in the universe,  it explains all of these concepts about luck as she understood it into this at least semi sentient Force.     She does believe in it,  and I think she finds the idea both frustrating,  as it runs up against at times her idea of fate,  and comforting.     The idea of a,  hopefully,  neutral third party in charge of the galaxy is something she is VERY on board with.     She doesn't verbalize this much since,  even with the general shift in Mandalorian mindsets away from the Jedi being completely awful,  her people still aren't terribly fond of them,  but when she says luck,  she definitely means the Force.

Hapes was the homeworld of the Hapans, a race whose notable members include Tenel Ka Djo, Allana Solo, and Ta'a Chume among others. Hapans valued beauty heavily which caused them to prefer to live clustered in cities rather than marr the nature of Hapes. Surrounded by shimmering nebulae, and with seven moons in the sky after sunset, Hapes never knew the darkness of true night, and the Hapan people had relatively poor night-vision.
