āhey, hey ā come on, donāt worry. look,ā lily said, whose own brand of confidence was unobtrusive yet sincere,Ā āitās always worth a shot to just ask. you never know what could happen⦠you might be surprised. and if not ā well, youād be in pretty much the same position youāre in now, right? except with lessĀ āwhat ifās.ā a glint in her eye.
Tilting his head to the side when he heard her words, he then sighed.Ā āI just donāt know if I should take up too much of her precious time. I know how annoying it is when people walk up to me whenever I am trying to just.. go on with my every day life. Itās the worstā rolling his eyes a little, running a hand through his hair.Ā āThanks for the pep talk. I am not the best person to talk to thoughā

āThatās an incredibly sweet name.ā Celia encouraged.Ā āI bet you had dimples then, or new someone with dimples. I donāt think toads can have dimples though, it wouldnāt be good for their skin.ā She found herself trying to imagine such a thing, but instead looked back to the other student. āSo youāre a toad boy. We need them too.ā
Smiling a little, he rubbed the back of his neck because he wasnāt used to someone actually being kind. People just found him weird and walked away. They didnāt have conversations with him for some unknown reason.Ā āI am. And I am proud of it. If I could handle more than one pet I would have moreā he nodded.Ā

He hadnāt seen her since the last time they spoke and truth be told, he was tired of the cat and mouse game. If she didnāt want anything to do with him, so be it. He could find other friends, he could find someone else to love. It may take some time, but he knew it could happen. Sitting by the window, he looked out of it, just trying to avoid the world as best as possible.Ā

āBut toad are lovely.ā Celia nearly scolded the idea.Ā āDoes your Toad have a name? I knew a Toad for a little while, but his name was just Toad.ā She considered the situation again.Ā āBut if you arenāt happy with just a Toad, then perhaps find another pet as well. I also have my cat, Mab. But she and Ganymede donāt always get on. So Mab is allowed out of the common room, but she always gets out somehowā Celia sighed.Ā āIt can be so worrisome with the grumpy, silly old queen.ā
āHis name is Dimple. I have no idea why I named him that. Must have happened when I got him as a kidā he said and shrugged. He then frowned a little at the thought of getting a new pet.Ā āThe thing is that I am rather attached to my toad. Yeah sure it would be cool to have an owl. But somehow I feel like a toad fits me betterā River chuckled.Ā
Iām sorry, I thought you ordered the angst omelette. Let me take that right back to the kitchen.

āYou think so?ā Celia replied, joy in her eyes. Ganymede was obviously cute.Ā āHeās been fussy lately.ā She explained, letting the little one creep up her arm with small claws that snagged along the edge of her robe.Ā āHeās called Ganymede. It just seemed like the perfect long name for something small. For something small to have a big name means big things can happen and itās much more fun to say than something average likeā¦well I donāt know what like really.ā
Just listening to what she was saying, his gaze never once moved away from the owl in question.Ā āCanymede. What a cool name. And in my opinion it fits him. Maybe it also fits his personality? Who knows, am I right?ā River chuckled as he looked at Celia.Ā āI wish I had picked an owl to be my pet. But due to me being.. well me I picked a Toadā he rolled his eyes at himself.Ā

āOh I know, Ganymede.ā Her petted the feathers of the little barn owl before holding out her opposite hand with a small treat for him. The little thing looked back to her as if to question if it was for him.Ā āGo on then, take it. Weāve both been couped up in here a long time. I just donāt have any letters that need delivering, you know.ā She offered the snack back to him only to be met with more resistance.Ā āAll right thenā¦ā She pocketed the few nibbles and rather pulled out a quill and ink with a small scrap of parchment paper.Ā āIĀ hope tomorrow is a brighter dayā¦ā She read her writing aloud to the small thing as she then promptly tied and left it in his small claw.Ā āYou can deliver thatĀ to the first person you see who seems to be down on their luck.ā
āDonāt ask me who to bring it to. You can be creative about it. YouĀ are the one who is intent on finding something to do.ā With a sigh, she pulled out the treat from her pocket once more.Ā āNow will you please have a little something to eat before you go?ā The mutual agreement between the pair seemed to be enough to get Ganymede to take a few nibbles from her hand.Ā āNo need to be so difficult about it. Now we are both happy.ā
"Oh my god what a cute owl" River said as a beaming smile formed. He had always been someone who loved animals. He couldn't trust people who didn't. What is there not to love with those cute faces and unique personalities? Just watching the two interact, he felt a genuine smile form on his lips for the first time in what felt like years. He had been in the darkness of sadness for so long, he didn't know what being happy felt like. Until this very moment when he watched a girl talk to her owl. "This is what I needed to see." he whispered, nodding to himself.
