âhey, hey â come on, donât worry. look,â lily said, whose own brand of confidence was unobtrusive yet sincere, âitâs always worth a shot to just ask. you never know what could happen⊠you might be surprised. and if not â well, youâd be in pretty much the same position youâre in now, right? except with less âwhat ifâs.â a glint in her eye.
Tilting his head to the side when he heard her words, he then sighed. âI just donât know if I should take up too much of her precious time. I know how annoying it is when people walk up to me whenever I am trying to just.. go on with my every day life. Itâs the worstâ rolling his eyes a little, running a hand through his hair. âThanks for the pep talk. I am not the best person to talk to thoughâ

âThatâs an incredibly sweet name.â Celia encouraged. âI bet you had dimples then, or new someone with dimples. I donât think toads can have dimples though, it wouldnât be good for their skin.â She found herself trying to imagine such a thing, but instead looked back to the other student. âSo youâre a toad boy. We need them too.â
Smiling a little, he rubbed the back of his neck because he wasnât used to someone actually being kind. People just found him weird and walked away. They didnât have conversations with him for some unknown reason. âI am. And I am proud of it. If I could handle more than one pet I would have moreâ he nodded.Â

He hadnât seen her since the last time they spoke and truth be told, he was tired of the cat and mouse game. If she didnât want anything to do with him, so be it. He could find other friends, he could find someone else to love. It may take some time, but he knew it could happen. Sitting by the window, he looked out of it, just trying to avoid the world as best as possible.Â

âBut toad are lovely.â Celia nearly scolded the idea. âDoes your Toad have a name? I knew a Toad for a little while, but his name was just Toad.â She considered the situation again. âBut if you arenât happy with just a Toad, then perhaps find another pet as well. I also have my cat, Mab. But she and Ganymede donât always get on. So Mab is allowed out of the common room, but she always gets out somehowâ Celia sighed. âIt can be so worrisome with the grumpy, silly old queen.â
âHis name is Dimple. I have no idea why I named him that. Must have happened when I got him as a kidâ he said and shrugged. He then frowned a little at the thought of getting a new pet. âThe thing is that I am rather attached to my toad. Yeah sure it would be cool to have an owl. But somehow I feel like a toad fits me betterâ River chuckled.Â
Iâm sorry, I thought you ordered the angst omelette. Let me take that right back to the kitchen.

âYou think so?â Celia replied, joy in her eyes. Ganymede was obviously cute. âHeâs been fussy lately.â She explained, letting the little one creep up her arm with small claws that snagged along the edge of her robe. âHeâs called Ganymede. It just seemed like the perfect long name for something small. For something small to have a big name means big things can happen and itâs much more fun to say than something average likeâŠwell I donât know what like really.â
Just listening to what she was saying, his gaze never once moved away from the owl in question. âCanymede. What a cool name. And in my opinion it fits him. Maybe it also fits his personality? Who knows, am I right?â River chuckled as he looked at Celia. âI wish I had picked an owl to be my pet. But due to me being.. well me I picked a Toadâ he rolled his eyes at himself.Â

âOh I know, Ganymede.â Her petted the feathers of the little barn owl before holding out her opposite hand with a small treat for him. The little thing looked back to her as if to question if it was for him. âGo on then, take it. Weâve both been couped up in here a long time. I just donât have any letters that need delivering, you know.â She offered the snack back to him only to be met with more resistance. âAll right thenâŠâ She pocketed the few nibbles and rather pulled out a quill and ink with a small scrap of parchment paper. âI hope tomorrow is a brighter dayâŠâ She read her writing aloud to the small thing as she then promptly tied and left it in his small claw. âYou can deliver that to the first person you see who seems to be down on their luck.â
âDonât ask me who to bring it to. You can be creative about it. You are the one who is intent on finding something to do.â With a sigh, she pulled out the treat from her pocket once more. âNow will you please have a little something to eat before you go?â The mutual agreement between the pair seemed to be enough to get Ganymede to take a few nibbles from her hand. âNo need to be so difficult about it. Now we are both happy.â
"Oh my god what a cute owl" River said as a beaming smile formed. He had always been someone who loved animals. He couldn't trust people who didn't. What is there not to love with those cute faces and unique personalities? Just watching the two interact, he felt a genuine smile form on his lips for the first time in what felt like years. He had been in the darkness of sadness for so long, he didn't know what being happy felt like. Until this very moment when he watched a girl talk to her owl. "This is what I needed to see." he whispered, nodding to himself.
