The Weasleys worry about Harry when they hear he ran away.
I love Jily. I adore their dynamic - but what I enjoy about them is what canon suggests.
And most Jily fanfics pretty much ignores that.
James isn't a cocky bully and Lily isn't attracted to him despite despising him. Their different social and economic classes rarely matter. Snape is an irredeemable incel (which is a whole another post).
That's why I prefer canon settings because Muggle AUs are just pure fluff or contrived angst - not that that isn't fun, but they might as well be OCs rather than James and Lily.
Also, a lot of Jily authors and fic have a tendency to treat Lily as a moral yardstick. I've heard 'Lily wouldn't have fallen in love with him if he didn't change' a million times and what??? Why isn't Lily allowed to be messy and love someone who isn't perfect but is what she wants?
Lily is canonically a hypocrite ('But you call everyone of my birth Mudblood, Severus. Why should I be any different?'). She was happy to ignore Snape calling everyone else slurs as long as he didn't say it to her. Once she starts liking James, who's to say she wouldn't turn a blind eye to the parts she doesn't like?
Which isn't to say James didn't actually grow up. A lot of anti James people like Sirius and Remus who were quite as bad as him, because they had the chance to see them as adults who were more mature.
But Lily is a separate character, not something to be used to measure that growth.
They obviously get along. They have similar moral codes, are clever and witty and enjoy jokes.
They are also both very complex, fascinating characters, however little they appear in the books, and fandom tends to simplify them into the perfect golden couple, which I have very little interest in.
That isn't to say I haven't read and written Jily fics that don't tackle these issues. There are some really great stories out there.
Firstly, this is why I think the world will be a better place when we stop making prefect!Lily default. There's no canon evidence to suggest she's a prefect (James wasn't - there's no rule that says only prefects become heads), and I think it would free her personality a little bit if we stopped making her one in every single story.
Secondly, while I do agree with the sentiment, I do think we need to add some nuance to this statement:
Also, a lot of Jily authors and fic have a tendency to treat Lily as a moral yardstick. I've heard 'Lily wouldn't have fallen in love with him if he didn't change' a million times and what??? Why isn't Lily allowed to be messy and love someone who isn't perfect but is what she wants?
Canonically, we are told that Lily did start to date him because he did change.
âShe started going out with him in seventh year,â said Lupin.
âOnce James had deflated his head a bit,â said Sirius.
âAnd stopped hexing people just for the fun of it,â said Lupin.
Coupled with her absolutely brutal (and probably fair) rejection of him in his fifth year, it's pretty clear that he has to change if she is to go out with him. Even if she has a few hypocritical sides, she's also principled enough that when she cuts Severus out of her life, she does so permanently.
Now, the change we see in James doesn't have to be as major as people make it. We're told James deflated his head A BIT. I'm quite bored with how quickly James changes in the beginning of their sixth year and how perfectly he changes. Suddenly, he is this completely mature guy when he's still sixteen. Let. him. be. arrogant. and. flawed. (let him be a teenage boy!). Just a bit less arrogant and has his head a bit more screwed on than in his fifth year. (He became Head Boy you say... so did Percy. He's got plenty of arrogance and flaws)
There's still plenty of growth left for James as Head Boy, and not the least at the start of the war. (Plus, I prefer when some of James' arc to be that he comes into his own, not that he changes. He's always been above average good in some contexts, such as helping Remus, and he's got an abundance of energy he wants to direct towards people who he thinks deserve it; when that starts being active, adult DEs, that's quite sexy).
Although I do use the word "date" deliberately, because I noticed you said "fall in love with", and I do think those two things are different. I'd go as far as to argue canon suggests she fancies James before the incident by the lake, and there's nothing in canon to suggest she changed her mind after that incident either. So I do agree overall that Lily could absolutely fall in love with James without him changing. I just don't believe she would date him otherwise, and only because we're told so explicitly by canon.
I also want to highlight how much I agree with this in particular:
Which isn't to say James didn't actually grow up. A lot of anti James people like Sirius and Remus who were quite as bad as him, because they had the chance to see them as adults who were more mature.
But Lily is a separate character, not something to be used to measure that growth.
But I think it's just a bit of a short-hand argument when people say: 'Lily wouldn't have fallen in love with him if he didn't change'. What they mean, or at least what canon explicitly tells us, is that James did change; he did deflate his head a bit; and we know this because it's only when this happens that Lily starts dating him.
Fair! I suppose I went to the other extreme and took that statement literally.
Canon does state that Lily only went out with James after he changed.
But still - as someone who used vigilante justice herself (she was ready to hex James and Sirius and they looked at her warily) she probably grew more lenient about James targeting future Death Eaters after her fallout with Snape. She did call him Snivellus and leave him to hang (which I am NOT villainizing her for - she had just been hurt horribly and was angry).
Also, this is Sirius and Remus talking about their dead best friend to his devastated orphan son so I guess I'm a bit skeptical of that - even if, obviously, all the canon we know is from Harry's limited perspective so kind of have to accept that. Also they were free and truthful in admitting James still went after Snape so point to that too.
What I was saying is that Lily is allowed to be messy and make decisions like dating not perfect or wholly good people.
Also, differentiating between falling in love and dating is important. Thanks for pointing that out!
Would Love to hear your opinion on Snape/lily! Both friendship/romantically (Jily is obvs one of my OTP, Iâm just curious of others pov)
I'm not a fan of romantic Snily. I don't know why - I'm a pretty easy-going multishipper so loads of things interest me - but romantically they just ... do not match. Ship and let ship, but I will admit that while the idea is sort of fascinating, I don't care for it.
But platonic Snily. . . . ooh boy. There's little that fascinates me more about Lily Evans or Severus Snape.
It saddens me that a lot of the Jily fandom reduces it to a not-real-anyway relationship when it had a huge impact on the both of them.
Why did Lily decide to trust James' friends in keeping her son safe? Because James 'height of dishonour to mistrust his friends' said it would be okay and wouldn't even hear of the idea of one of them being the spy? Or because she was desperate to believe that these friends wouldn't betray her the way another had?
That isn't to say that Snily weren't well on their way to being in a toxic relationship - evidence suggests that Snape wanted her to believe in his views only and that goal was stymied by their being in different houses and having different social circles.
I don't think Snape wanted to isolate her - he complains about James because he recognizes her attraction to him, but he makes no mention of her other friends. In my opinion, he wanted to be the most important thing in her life - not the only one.
He wanted to not 'let' her do something, but he also immediately back-tracked when she got angry. Sign of developing toxic behaviour.
One thing I should make clear is that Lily is absolutely right in dropping Snape.
(Idealogically, it should have been even earlier. It wasn't until he personally, publically hurt her that she did it, which makes Lily SUCH an interesting character. I don't know why fandom flattens her the way it does.)
But while a goddess might have magnanimously forgiven Snape and encouraged him to change, Lily is human. I don't blame her for leaving him to his fate in a fit of anger, though I do think if James and Sirius went through with their threats she would have regretted it.
Another thing I like to think about is how her friendship with Snape affected that with her housemates. Obviously James still respected and liked her, but what did Sirius - with a Slytherin brother - think of it? What about Mary who had had dark magic used on her by Snape's other friends? How did Lily justify still being friends with Snape after that?
I have to admit, the idea of a platonic relationship carrying Snape's motivations through two decades is really compelling to me. Honestly, that he was in love with her makes it all a lot more boring.
They were from the same town. He introduced her to magic. She was the bright spot in his life. She fought to keep him until he crossed a line. She was the reason he took a risk that Voldemort would have tortured and murdered him for.
While obviously nothing excuses joining the Death Eaters, I've always found teen Snape a pitiable, understandable, tragic figure. While it isn't Lily's job to keep someone on the good side - she's a person of her own, not a moral chain or yardstick - I find it quite plausible that being abandoned by the one person he truly cared about finally pushed him over.
(Adult Snape is a whole other post).
He was so obviously radicalized. Like, he was the perfect boy to turn. He was poor and bullied - and the Death Eaters promised him money and power. And possibly revenge on his abusive father, who was part of the demographic the Death Eaters were threatening. I can see why he was tempted, especially when surrounded by those who believed the idealogy.
He obviously planned to have his cake and eat it too - keep both Lily and his ambitions.
And he probably felt like she didn't understand him fully. Lily was probably lower middle class while he was dirt poor. He came from an abusive family while she - despite her troubles with Petunia - had proud, doting parents.
(In a side note, I have to laugh when I see posts about the older Evans treating Snape as a son. Where do you think Petunia got her attitude from? Even if they weren't as egregious social-climbers, at best they would have seen him as a charity case, not a prospect for Lily).
He probably justified wanting to join the Death Eaters using that logic. Lily didn't truly understand. She was lucky - and in some ways, that's true.
Even though they were in similar positions in the wizarding world. He with his muggle father and name, and her as a muggleborn, both extremely talented.
I actually think that's part of why Lily stuck with him for so long. She was empathetic, understanding slightly of his need for power - though not the part where he compromised his morals to get it - and nostalgic for the boy she'd met.
I read a meta once about how Harry's enchantment with the Half-Blood Prince book mirrored his mother's friendship with the man himself. How he defended the Sectumsempra spell and note when Hermione questioned him is therefore how I imagine Lily's interactions with her Gryffindor friends about Snape.
(Another sidenote: the take that Snape stole the Half-Blood Prince book from James also makes me laugh and roll my eyes. People are really allergic to the idea that a person who did bad things can be talented huh?)
But people are right that childhood trauma can only excuse so much.
That's why I find Lily and Snape reconicilation fics that happen later in life that don't tackle this issue boring. Especially the ones that villainize Lily.
And of course, Lily's memory never really leaves Snape. It inspires his actions to the end.
(In creepy ways too. I will admit that I find Snape tearing off a photo of her - separating her from her family - and the sign off to a friend she chose to take for himself extremely disturbing.)
The slow and then instant implosion of Lily and Snape's relationship is FASCINATING to me.
I have a couple of Jily fic ideas that have the Lily-Snape dynamic at the forefront. I am SO excited to write them but I have no clue when that will be or what the reception will be like lol.
I love Jily. I adore their dynamic - but what I enjoy about them is what canon suggests.
And most Jily fanfics pretty much ignores that.

Chapter 5: heart hops
As he wondered what else he could say, a floral, familiar scent floated up to his nose.
And he immediately knew why Sirius had been so smug before.
âI think weâre supposed to be ferrying them over to the camp, not just sitting here,â was how she greeted him.
âGinny,â he greeted in turn. His voice was tight. He wasnât sure of his reception.
But he was to be surprisedâshe looked tiny. Apologetic. Small, even.

Ron clicks his tongue. âSheâll get over it. Imagine the look on Fred and Georgeâs faces if I get chosenââ
âOr if I get chosen,â she counters.
Her brother actually laughs in her face.
Neville recognizes the sudden coil of anger in her for what it is and drops back hurriedly, taking Dean and Seamus with him.
âAnd what exactly is that supposed to mean?â She arches a brow, crossing her arms. Â

James reluctantly, upon his manager's insistence, goes to his hometown, never expecting what he would find thereâa son, and a love he'd thought long lost.
Jamesie's jaw set. The sunlight caught the frames of his glasses and made his eyes look golden. "Not when they come into a general's âone who was vital to winning the war, at thatâbirthplace and start insulting him."
Alright. That was a fair point.
"We can just agree to disagree and go our separate ways," she suggested.
Severus looked mutinous but didn't disagree.
"Do you even have an opinion on this?" The other boy's voice was a drawl. If the first one had seemed posh, this one was, well.

When Harry's best friend decides her engagement party would be at an amusement parkâprobably her fiance's idea, the guy he's only met a couple timesâhe decides to go there early to enjoy some of the rides, not expecting to meet the love of his life.
âI thought you were a quidditch player, not a handler?â
âAre we doing the bloody treasure hunt or not?â she huffed.
He suppressed a laugh into a cough at her glare, and then grabbed her hand without thought.

But before he could withdraw, her own closed over his.
She was blushing lightly, but looking straight ahead.

âIâm not sure if I should tell you to rest up or not,â she mused. âWhat if youâre on my team? What if you arenât on my team?â
âDates are always on opposite teams,â he reminded her, and her nose scrunched up.
âRight. I forgot.â
âForgot that, or that weâre going as dates?â he teased.
She shot him a look. âTrust me, itâs impossible to forget the latter.â
His voice dipped without his consent. âImpossible, huh?â
She cleared her throat, looking away. âWe should get going. I bet the kids are excited to see you.â
âNot as excited they will be to see you after your last match.â Harry stood up, walking over to the sink to wash his glass. âCongrats, by the way.â
âYeah, thanks.â She sounded distinctly unhappy now. But she ignored the inquiring glance he shot at her.
