Why does anyone ship anything?
Overall Pro Wincest incidents-
Sam and Dean are close. As in, they live their entire lives basically within ten feet of one another, with very few exceptions in the show. They walk close to one another ( just watch the show) even when there is plenty of room for them to be apart. People think Cas and Dean have no personal space between them, but just look at how much closer Sam and Dean stand and walk together. And it’s not awkward for them.
They touch one another in what should be intimate touches. Ask a grown man if he ever strokes his brother’s cheek or jawline with his thumb. If he ever cups his neck or winds his fingers into the cloth of his shirt. The answer, probably no.
Now, the ENTIRE show is LITERALLY built on the love they have for one another, but just let me point out a few incidents where Sam and Dean go beyond to show their affections.
Croatoan- Sam is about to turn into a rage monster, and there is nothing Dean can do to save him. Dean hands the keys to his prize possession over without a thought, and is ready to die with Sam. Sam pleads with him not to, but Dean has zero qualms about laying down his life with Sams.
Soul selling- You can love your sibling, but if they died would you trade your life and soul to bring them back….? Could you physically not live without them? I’ve lost a mother, a grandmother, and a grandfather that were literally the most influential people in my life - But I can live without them and wouldn’t do this.
In season three, Sam is so desperate to save Dean he is willing to make a deal that essentially turns them both into monsters, just to keep Dean alive. He’s willing to do anything.
When Dean does finally die, Sam tries to bring him back the same way Dean died for him. It’s a mutual codependency.
Season five- Sam and Dean are revealed to be soulmates. They share a heaven; they do what few other couples do. They are so entwined with each other’s lives that even the afterlife has them bound. The only other soulmates the show really mentions? Their parents. John and Mary.
Sacrifices- Countless times Sam and Dean sacrifice their friends and romantic partners for each other. Lisa, Amelia, Benny, Cas- Nothing is more important to them then each other.
—Nevermind the gay innuendo made about Sam and Dean by casual observers and close friends alike —
The young boy at the hotel saying that they are ‘two queens’
The hotel owner in ‘playthings’ that assumes they are a couple.
The suburban development community in “bugs”, where two people assume they are a couple, and where Dean goes along with it.
When they actively pose as a gay couple in the Christmas episode when investigating the location of the meadowsweet wreaths.
The repeated comments about the ‘Office romance vibe’ in season 8’s ‘bitten’
For that matter, Dean actually thought Sam was hitting on him in ‘its a terrible life’.
Jody Mills remarks that Sam and Dean have ‘something special’ relating to the pair being ‘each other’s religion’.
Zachariah said that they are ‘erotically codependent’
Michael called Sam Dean’s ‘darling little Sammy’
The gay couple that are so touched by Dean and Sam’s relationship they LARP as them.
The acknowledgement at the SPN convention of the ‘homoerotic subtext’ of the show.
Lisa, under the truth spell, reveals that she knows Dean’s relationship with Sam is ‘tangled up’ and that they were doomed as soon as he came back. She explains how the relationship she has with her sister is nothing like what Dean feels for Sam. Even she knows .
In “Sex and Violence,” the siren, the creature that has used sex to lure all of her previous victims, turns into SAM for Dean. He is admittedly a mirror image of what Dean wants from his brother. This sexual creature.
Dean has literally said that he would pick the Sam over the world. ‘There is nothing that I would put in front of you.’ When he could have saved the world from all of Demonkind, the saga of their whole damned lives, or he could pull his brother back into his arms, he chose Sam. In a church he took his brother’s hand in his and told him he meant more than anything.
In the next episode we see Dean literally say “ain’t no me if there ain’t no you.” Dean would die without his brother. He’s laying it on the line. If Sam’s not alive, Dean doesn’t want to live.
They’ve lived and died for each other and continue to do so. They run back to one another whenever they try to split, and there are 9 seasons of show to add to this small list of reasons I’ve put here.
If you can’t understand why people ship it, watch it again, because there is so much love there OF COURSE people are going to make it romantic. Of course.
People may talk about Dean and Cas as the love story of the show but they are PEANUTS compared to the love that Sam and Dean share. Even if you never see it romantically it doesn’t change the fact that their love is canon. It’s deep and abiding and very real- and you don’t need the romantic fanon twist to understand that.
