☆ It was a pretty odd phenomenon. A boy just --- dropping out of the sky? Well. In all of the time Steven had spent protecting the Earth from corrupted Gems, Homeworld warriors, and the Diamonds, he had accrued quite the long list of ‘weird things that had happened in Beach City’. But this case seemed particularly strange. He thought to retrace his steps: he was sitting inside the beach house, minding his own business, and then *THUD*; he sees this boy land on the sand below the cliff. Could he have been investigating the beach house and accidentally fallen? No, no. Surely he would have noticed a stranger on the grounds all the way up here. Maybe he could fly? Well, no other boy that Steven knew could fly, save for himself, of course. Still. It didn’t look as if the boy posed any immediate danger. He was about the same height as Steven, but a tad slimmer, and probably the same age. He was dressed as any teenager would be: shorts, jacket, standard sneakers; though he did have a rather nice trucker hat and an interesting mark on his forehead, though Steven hadn’t taken the time to really investigate anything other than whether or not the boy was alive. He seemed to be alright and was softly breathing, his body resting against the sand that was being washed over in the warm, summer sun. It almost seemed like it would be a shame to try and bring him back into consciousness. But it also couldn’t hurt to try. “Uhm. H-Hello? Are you alright?” There didn’t seem to be a response, so Steven leaned down, inching closer to the mysterious boy’s face. “Helloooooo? Anyone in there?”
☆ So. I don’t want to be that guy... But I was rifling through a couple of older episodes of Steven Universe and stumbled upon this clip and just now took notice.

Su crits saying the show has gotten more racist without providing even the tiniest example of why they think it is and trying to justify their horrendously bad takes is the pinncale of how toxic the community is
crits: provide tons of examples of racism y’all, covering your eyes: well i cant see the posts calling out the racism, so there is no racism!
said the crit still not providing examples
-concrete -the stereotyping of connie and her family (they’re asian so connie HAS to be good at math and her parents HAVE to be strict) -absolutely no links to a character that’s a person of color and their culture other than small hints in the background, no elaboration at all -the human zoo -andy demayo as a whole. with the entire “get out of my country” speech of his. -any gems that are black-coded (see: bismuth) being treated unfairly due to a different point of view -characters who are people of color or coded to be a person of color are always pushed into the back, and never given proper screen time, all screen time goes to the white characters instead (see: garnet. her personality has been stripped away to essentially nothingness, other than fusion, due to this.)
-Concrete is a concept character that never made it into the final draft of the show, and the fact that assholes like you keep bringing her up as if her mere brief and discarded existance is some sort proof that Rebecca Sugar is totally racist deep down really proves how your bullshit purity culture actively disencourages media that actually attempts for positive representation.
-Connie being smart is not a fucking stereotype it’s a perfectly normal character trait. It would be a stereotype if it was her only character trait, which it isn’t, and if you dare say otherwise then YOU are the one flanderizing her so you can support your bullshit rhetoric. While, yes, her parents did start as helicopter parents the episode in which they are introduced reveals that they are also accepting and open-minded of non-traditional families as long as they feel they’re doing a good job, something that doesn’t fit the “stuffy traditional, over-achieving asian parents” (also, Fusion Cuisine was written by Lamar Abrams and supervised Ian). Furthermore, Priyanka’s overachievingness and it’s influence on Connie is explored, criticized, and resolved in Nightmare Hospital, making not just an issue of her race but an actual character flaw that undergoes an arc. Meanwhile, Doug also has an episode devoted to himself and is portrayed as a loving goof who jst wants his daughter and his friend to think he is cool.
-Lars cooks a dish that’s directly tied to his Filipino heritage. From the Steven Universe Podcast: “Ian Jones-Quartey noticed, as the son of immigrants, that many immigrant families have members who go off and reinvent themselves in another country. He was bringing that to the story of Pink Diamond becoming Rose Quartz, as well as the idea that powerful and influential families can also have drama and baggage.” “Ian thinks immigrants and their kids will relate strongly to aspects of the show, especially the Pizza family which is very closely based on his family (most notably, Nanefua as Ian’s grandmother and Kiki and Jenny as Ian’s cousins).” You whistle-blowing Fake Woke douchebags sure like to ignore the fact that ACTUAL PEOPLE OF COLOR WORK IN THE SHOW. How wouldn’t you? You admantly refuse to make at least a minute of research.
-What the fuck does the human zoo have to do with racism it’s not like it only has POC humans and even if it was racist it was made by the antagonists of the shows and it is PORTRAYED AS A BAD THING. You can’t claim that an aspect of the show is racist when said aspect is portrayed as a bad thing that shouldn’t happen. Speaking of which:
- THE WHOLE POINT OF ANDY AND GEM HARVEST IS THAT ANDY IS WRONG, YOU IDIOTS. YET YOU FUCKERS KEEP BRING HIM UP AND CLAIMING THAT REBECCA WANTS TO TELL CHILDREN TO HUG NAZIS. ALL WHILE SHE’S A BISEXUAL NONBINARY JEWISH WOMAN.
-Care to fucking elaborate on that dude? Because Bismuth is not the only black-coded gem and she is an important strong character who brings up heavy moral debates about the show’s themes. Pro-Tip: your subjective opinions on how certain charaters are handled don’t proove that the team filled with poc making this cartoon is racist.
-Following up directly from all of this you dare flanderize Garnet into one trait and use it to support your bullshit argument. While fusion is an important trait and theme for Garnet so is her leadership, wisdom, her existensialism with her future vision, her motherly struggles with Steven and more. Here, look at all this moments when we get to see Garnet’s personality after it’s revealed that she’s a fusion:
As for the other “ignored” poc/ poc coded cast, well I’d say Amethyst and Connie are still really fucking important and that their development has been spectacular so far. And while we haven’t seen Lars and the off-colors in a while, he is still has his own important subplot that will surely come back soon with the recent events, and Bismuth is back too!
In conclussion: miss me with your fake-woke “hot takes”, son.
Like that’s the fuckin’ problem. It’s really not hard to come up with genuine criticism of SU - the pacing, the animation quality, the structure of the series, the presence of inconsistencies or plot holes, the “filler” episodes, all of them are places you can look and say “do that” or “don’t do that” and debate whether they work or not. But people would rather shout and nitpick and circlejerk RAAACIIISM even as they line up to see countless things that are a thousand times worse in every way.

melancholeyes:
“I suppose.” In a way Pink had fulfilled her purpose, just…not in the way they expected. She had become a leader, inspiring countless gems to follow her into battle – misguided, though it may have been. If only they returned to Earth sooner. Blue sighed again, breath fluttering the white tips of her hair.
“I do.” So much grief, such longing, in that one word. Oftentimes the ache felt like a physical thing, a fissure through the facets of her own gem. It’d been so long now she was convinced it would never heal, but this is why she came up here, wasn’t it? To get to know this…new form. Steven. The edge of her smile was tinged with sadness, but sill Blue made an effort. She pointed to the strange looking instrument on his back. “What’s this…?”
☆ “O-Oh. This guy?”
The boy reached behind his back, angling the small guitar to the front of his body. He held the instrument delicately in his hands, letting the Diamond gander at it closely. “On Earth, it’s called a ‘guitar’. Well, actually, this is a smaller one called a ‘ukulele’.” He grinned, strumming his fingers across the four strings to produce an inordinate chord for the Diamond. “You see, it has these strings. And when the strings are stretched tightly over a wooden body, it lets the person playing it create music.” He twisted the knobs at the end of the instrument, changing the pitch of the strings before the large Gem’s eyes. “You can even change the pitch of each string to make different kinds of music!” He felt himself get a little overexcited, and retreated back a bit. “You.. Do have music on Homeworld. Don’t you?” Of course, they had to have some form of music, anyways. It was a common occurrence for Diamonds to have their Pearls sing to them. Steven had seen it before.

melancholeyes:
She recalled that shield with a vivid remembrance. It had baffled them all, how a single Rose Quartz had emerged with such power. No matter how closely they examined the rest of the cut, no other gem exhibited an inkling of the same abilities. In hindsight, she supposed it all made sense. Blue followed the motion of his hands, gazing out over the horizon, before looking back.
“I imagine what they’re drawn to is not this place…but you.” Yes, his home was beautiful in its simplicity. But was it different than any other place on Earth? A gem’s loyalty ran deep; deeper, perhaps, than any other aspect of their design. It would not surprise her to know they sought out their Diamond, even in their most damaged states.
“It’s as you said, there aren’t many places of power left.” Only a fraction of their structures ever reached completion, and those that did were now left in ruins – some even before their wayward corruption attack. Blue grazed her thumb across her knuckles as if soothing away the memory. “Earth has a certain…tenacity.” Even she couldn’t deny that. It never ceased fighting, never slowed its steady reclamation of the land it once called its own. Someday there would be no hint they were ever here at all.
The thought saddened her.
“It truly suited Pink.”
☆ It was hard not to notice the Diamond’s downward gaze, and the subtle body language of her hand. The realization of who he was talking to was actually sinking in. Here was an authority figure that was thousands of years old, more than likely even far older than that of the Crystal Gems. The concept of an adaptive life out of anything other than that of the Homeworld Gems probably seemed like such a violent reaction; chaotic, even. “I’m sure it must seem weird that Pink Diamond would ever give up the comfort of Homeworld for this place. But... We just call it ‘life’ here. It changes and adapts, regardless of what will happen to it. I guess I can just see why Mom wanted to ignore the attempts to colonize Earth. It would’ve destroyed that tenacity, Blue. A-And while she certainly could’ve went about it a different way, she stuck to her beliefs. And. I think that’s something we can both be proud of.” He gently reached out and laid a hand on the luxurious gown that adorned the Diamond’s frame.
“You... Really miss her, huh?”
