kai had come to st agnes for the slopes, that lodi was sure. mostly because she’d checked her pass herself earlier that day. but, she hadn’t expected her to still be there hours later.

the lobby had softened as evening settled in, guests lingering with drinks, there was a moment to breathe. lodi slipped behind the piano the way she always did when she needed a pause that still looked productive, fingers finding the keys. the first notes were quiet, then steadier as her voice joined in, warm and low, filling the space. when she finished, the applause was polite and only then did lodi look up and catch kai’s eye, she was clapping harder than most (or so it felt) — she smiled, a little shy despite herself, stepping away from the piano. “i thought you were here to ski,” she said as she approached her, voice light, teasing. “don’t tell me i’m competing with the mountain now.”

the bell above the door of the sweet concierge chimes the second rowan steps inside, cold air following her in. the place smells like sugar and cocoa, she rubs her hands together, eyes already scanning the displays like she hasn’t been in here a dozen times this month alone. “tell me you’ve got something new,” rowan says, voice easy as she looks toward the counter. “or don’t, actually. i’ll still end up buying the same thing and pretending i had free will.” she taps the glass, with a laugh, peering at rows of chocolates and jars of candy. “long day, brutal practice, and i’m pretty sure this counts as recovery,” rowan adds, finally lifting her gaze to olivia with a grin. “so what are you recommending today, something safe, or something that’ll absolutely ruin my self-control?”

the living room smells like coffee and old leather, the kind of familiar comfort rowan never really notices until she’s back here in her childhood home. the carter’s place hasn’t changed much since she moved out: hockey books stacked on the side table, a framed photo of the red cheetahs from a championship season on the wall, the tv already tuned to the nhl pregame.

rowan drops onto the couch with a huff, tugging her socks higher and stealing a handful of popcorn from the bowl angelo set between them. “you know,” she says, eyes on the screen as the commentators drone on, “if this game turns into a defensive nightmare, i’m blaming you for making me watch it.” there’s no bite behind it, just familiarity, family. she leans back, “so, dad,” rowan adds, glancing at him, “you watching this as a fan tonight… or am i about to get a full breakdown of their neutral zone coverage?”

alex had wandered into the vintage thrift market with no real intention of buying anything, hands tucked into the pockets of his coat as he wandered between stalls. the place buzzed softly, music from a portable speaker, the smell of coffee and dust and something faint in the air.

spotting pippa near a table stacked with knickknacks, he slowed, “this feels dangerous,” he said lightly, nodding toward a rack of jackets beside her. “i come here telling myself i’m just looking, and somehow i leave with a lamp i don’t need and a story about where it came from.” he picked up a postcard from the table, turning it over in his hands. “you find anything worth taking home yet?” his tone easy, curious.

where: the silver spoon

alex had picked the silver spoon on purpose, not because it was impressive, but because it wasn’t. the kind of place that hadn’t changed much in years, vinyl booths cracked just enough to prove they were used, chrome edges dulled by time. it felt safe. he slid into the booth across from declan, shrugging out of his coat and placing it beside him. “i figured this place was better than somewhere too quiet,” he said lightly, already reaching for the menu even though he knew it by heart. his eyes looked up, meeting declan’s for a beat longer than necessary before he looked away again, pretending to study the options. “they still do breakfast all day,” he added, like it was vital information that no one in town knew, even though they all did. “and the coffee’s… drinkable. which is the main reason i’m here.” there was a pause; “glad you were able to squeeze me into your busy schedule,” he spoke playfully.

"if  you  make  that  a  poutine  instead,  we  have  a  deal."  they  have  drank  too  much  and  need  something  to  soak  in  —  and  with  it  being  off  season,  carb  loading  doesn't  seem  so  bad  to  overindulge.  in  fact,  they  are  already  lifting  their  hands  to  find  a  server  to  order  for  them  —  someone  who  is  preferably  not  charlie  —  when  the  other  goes  on  about  one  of  pippa's  least  favorite  subjects:  fathers.  "so  present  fathers  can  do  damage.  huh."  that  is  something  they  do  know  a  little  about,  but  it's  better  not  to  speak  too  much.  if  she  was  to  introduce  herself  with  her  full  name,  any  local  would  understand  the  reason  for  the  skittish  behavior  regarding  parents  —  which  is  why  she  never  called  herself  a  jumeaux  if  she  could  help  it.

the  praise  for  carrie  does  get  her  more  into  the  conversation.  maybe  it's  morbid,  all  things  considered,  but  they  did  enjoy  a  horror  movie,  especially  when  they  were  gorey  and  horrible  like  most  of  stephen  king's  stuff  is.  "it's  a  beautiful  performance  —  it's  not  everyday  you're  splattered  with  fake  pig  and  human  blood."  carrie  as  a  broadway  or  ballet  show  would  be  incredible;  she  should  push  more  for  it,  given  her  experience  doing  bloodied  juliet  in  a  few  romeo  and  juliet  productions  was  already  fun  due  to  the  violence  of  it  all. 

they squint their eyes slightly at the mention of losing loudly and not liking to lose. "what  are  you,  one  of  the  hockey  girls?"  this  town's  penchance  for  breeding  athletes  should  have  stopped  surprising  her  by  now.

rowan’s grin widens instantly. “poutine?” she echoes, already nodding. “yeah, deal sealed. gravy fixes most problems, including trivia-related ones.” she lifts a hand too, half-heartedly flagging down a server. at the comment about fathers, her expression shifts just a touch. she shrugs one shoulder, “even the good ones leave a mark,” she says. “sometimes it’s muscle memory, sometimes it’s expectations. depends on the day.” she doesn’t push it.

when pippa warms up at the carrie talk, rowan laughs, bright and a little delighted. “right? it’s brutal in the best way. like, if you’re gonna suffer, at least make it art.” she gestures vaguely, as if splattering imaginary blood. then she snorts at the hockey comment. “guilty,” rowan says, lifting her glass in a mock toast. “blue hounds. defense. losing loudly is kind of a job requirement.” her eyes lift as she leans in a little. “don’t worry though — i only flip tables emotionally. usually.”

"that is a dicey decision to make, especially in this weather. hot chocolate is a great indulgence, don't get me wrong, but coffee... there's something to be said about a familiar comfort, right?" theo comments, falling easily into the dialogue with him. the concession worker slides her drink across the counter and drops a bit of change into her hand, which theo quickly places in the jar labeled tips in black marker. "since when do i need an excuse for that? i thought flirting was the kind of thing you welcomed happily, especially from me," she chuckles, lips wrapping around her straw and taking a long slip as theo watches him with quiet consideration.

as far as relationships go, theo doesn't maintain any of the romantic variety, but alex is a special exception to that unspoken rule. maybe not something romantic, exactly, but consistent and comforting in the same way your favorite sweater is, even if it's not something you wear exclusively. "perfect! as tempting as it could be to hold that over your head, i already know how you can pay me back." the words expose a secret motive for greeting alex in line tonight, but theo is visibly unbothered, bouncing a little on her heels. "sit with me, keep me company during the game?"

alex’s smile deepened at that, the kind that stayed a second longer than usual. “you’re not wrong,” he said, voice warm. “coffee’s predictable. dependable. feels like the right call when everything else is cold and loud.” his gaze followed the movement of her lips around the straw, not subtle at all, he knew what he was doing. “and you’re right,” he added, quieter now. “i’ve never had a problem with flirting. especially not from you.”

he took his coffee when it was handed over, fingers curling around the cup then looked back at her, something easy settling into his expression. “i figured you already had a plan,” he said, shaking his head lightly. “you usually do.” at her ask, he didn’t hesitate. “yeah,” he replied simply. “i can do that.” a softer smile. “i’d like to.” he gestured with his cup toward the seating. “lead the way. you can explain the rules like i don’t already know them.”

blue eyes glanced at alex, o sign of defience or sarcasm, only a mutual understanding that any of them could escape the strange night. " you didn't strike me as fragile. though that wouldn't be a problem, to some degree we all are" sam was, even if it was painful to admit. " well, i'm not interested in what the town has decided.... i'm more interested in who you are. "

the touch of his hand against hers was a pleasant surprise, one sam held onto. " beer is always a good choice, there is something even better. have you ever tried a cocktail with beer? " with her hand in his, she walked towards the bar. " there's this one called ruby hearts, they use liquor and mezcal, it tastes like magic " it was one of the first drinks sam learned to make when buying the bar, a favorite. " this is going to sound strange, but why are you always at the rink? i can't help but feel a bit curious now. "

alex slowed just a touch at that, her words landing softer than he expected. he glanced at her, really meeting her gaze this time, “i think most of us are,” he said quietly. “we just get better at hiding it.” a smile followed, honest, “and for what it’s worth… i appreciate that you’re more interested in me than the version people pass around.”

at the mention of the drink, his brows lifted, curiosity winning out. “beer and mezcal?” he echoed. “that does sound like something that could either be terrible or… awesome.” he paused, then nodded. “all right. ruby hearts. i trust you.” as they moved, her question drew a soft exhale from him. “the rink’s been a constant,” he admitted. “grew up there. played hockey most of my life. some habits don’t fade, even when the skates do.” he glanced back toward her, tone lighter but sweet. “and i like seeing people in their element.”

New Year’s Eve was always a night of conflicted feelings for Nohr. As beautiful as it was, with excitement and sparkles everywhere, it also carried a different kind of weight. It was a time for reflection, for taking stock of himself and inevitably for noticing how another year had slipped by. It wasn’t about age, he’d felt that quiet melancholy for as long as he could remember. Perhaps it was a fear of change, of how easily everything could be lost simply because a new year was about to begin. It was strange, but impossible to fully avoid. He was lost in those thoughts when a feminine voice cut through them, pulling him back to the present and earning a slightly embarrassed smile from him. “Thank you so much, but I think I have everything I need…” He said, unable to think of anything she might do for him that night. Then he paused, as if remembering something important. “Oh no, there is something you can do for me." He added, a new smile lifting the corners of his lips. “I need you to have fun tonight. Can you do that for me?”

lodi laughed softly at that, the sound easy and light in a way that surprised even her. she tipped her head, studying him for a moment as if weighing the request like it was something official on her to-do list. “that might be the hardest thing anyone’s asked of me all night,” she admitted, warmth in her eyes. “but i’ll see what i can do.”

she glanced around them, the glow of lights and the steady sound of voices filling the space, then back to nohr. “maybe fun looks a little different for me,” lodi added gently. “making sure everyone else gets to have their moment, then stealing a few of my own in between.” a smile settled on her mouth. “but i promise i won’t let the night pass without enjoying at least part of it. deal?”

" you did.... you're actually one of the best teacher i ever had, or more like a coach " sam dragged at the cigarette again, a soft grin tugging at her lips. " memorable? that's... nice, very nice " somehow she hoped the pastries and their silly conversations could make up for the amount of times élodie saved her.

blue eyes drifted towards the lobby, a group of tourists flooded in with bags and coats, eager to spend indecent amounts of money at st. agnes. " i don't know how you do it? this place seems too busy " sam took another drag of the cigarette, half melancholic. " we do have security footage, that should help. what if someone took it? how do i even fire a person, lodi? " fear washed over her. " sometimes i kind of wish i could go back to skating... i fucking miss it."

lodi’s expression softened at that, something proud and gentle settling in her eyes. “coach feels right,” she said quietly.“you stop seeing it as busy and start seeing it as moving parts,” lodi replied looking through to the lobby. “once you can name what’s actually wrong, it’s less overwhelming.” easier said than done, but she didn’t say that part out loud.

at the question about firing someone, lodi turned back to her fully. “slow down,” she said calmly. “we don’t know that someone stole it yet. footage first. facts first. you don’t fire on a feeling. you fire on certainty, and even then, you do it clean. private. respectful.” her voice stayed grounded.

then sam’s last confession landed, and lodi reached out without thinking, bumping her shoulder lightly against hers. “you’re allowed to miss it,” she said softly. “and you’re allowed to want more than one life. this one doesn’t erase who you were on the ice.” she paused, eyes kind. “and it doesn’t mean you can’t find your way back to it somehow.”

viviane  tilts  her  head,  lips  opening  slowly  in  a  smile  that  is  half  -  teasing,  half  -  encouraging  —  she  had  always  thought  that  elodie  needs  to  let  loose,  especially  in  and  around  the  resort,  but  try  telling  that  to  the  danvers.  "more  than  allowed.  needs  one,  i'd  say."  vivi  rises  her  glass  of  water  as  if  to  clink  them  together.  "it  doesn't  have  to  be  work.  you  can  not  be  on  shift  on  the  31st  of  december."  she  shakes  her  head,  in  disbelief,  but  the  heat  that  once  would  rise  to  her  voice  at  those  words  is  only  there  in  surface,  though  disapproval  is  not  shy  in  its  appearance. 

she  does  feel  a  faint  flutter  in  her  stomach  at  her  ex's  softening  voice  and  sweet  words,  and  she's  quick  to  down  a  sip  of  the  water  as  if  to  pace  herself  from  saying  something  stupid  —  it  has  been  five  years,  and  this  shouldn't  be  the  effect  elodie  has  on  her,  but  it's  difficult  when  her  ex  looks  so  beautiful,  happy  in  her  enviroment,  and  even  dropping  sweet  words  to  her?  oxum,  help  her.  "my  masseuse  has  a  different  timetable  than  you,  so  we  keep  missing  each  other."  she  doesn't  say  that  it's  on  purpose,  and  viviane  hopes  that  it's  not  obvious  in  the  way  she  says  it,  because  she  doesn't  want  to  make  elodie  think  it's  a  bad  thing.  "and  i  still  haven't  learned  how  to  ski  properly.  but  how  could  i  miss  the  new  years  party?"  she  shrugs,  smile  growing  again  on  her  mouth.  "i  missed  it."  the  place,  you.  viviane  lets  her  fill  the  gaps  and  drinks  another  sip  of  her  water.

lodi’s smile lingered as viviane lifted her glass, and she raised the champagne just enough to meet it, a soft clink between crystals. “you always did think you knew what i needed,” she said lightly, warmth moving through the words even as she teased. “and you’re not wrong,” lodi added after a beat, her voice soft now. “tonight’s just… a hard habit to break.” her gaze drifted briefly across the lobby before returning to viviane.

at the mention of the spa, her mouth curved again, fond and familiar. “i wondered,” she admitted. “i kept thinking our paths were missing each other by minutes.” there was no accusation there, only something thoughtful. “but i’m glad you’re here tonight.” she shifted her weight, “and for what it’s worth, you’re still welcome on the slopes anytime,” lodi said gently. “even if you never quite master it.” then, softer still, “i missed it too.”

theo clears her throat before speaking, aiming for the attention of the person in front of her in the concession line. "phone a friend?" she inquires, a tone of merriment in the question. from the auditorium, an announcer's voice booms in the distance, not quite clear enough that theo can make out any actual words. "from who wants to be a millionaire," she adds in lieu of a real explanation to her joke, digging a few dollar bills out of her pocket as she sidesteps them, chin jutting at the worker behind the register. "cherry coke, please? extra ice." theo hands over the cash, disinterested in the monetary value of her drink, gaze fixed instead of the person she technically cut in line. "you looked like you were having a tough time trying to order. thought i'd buy you some time," theo offers, head tilting with natural consideration.

alex glanced down at the menu, then back at her, caught mid-indecision in a way that would’ve embarrassed him if it were anyone else. instead, a small smile tugged at his mouth, amused and a little guilty. “i was weighing the emotional consequences of hot chocolate versus coffee,” he said lightly, stepping aside to give her room. “you probably saved me from overthinking it entirely.”

his eyes flicked to her drink, then back to her face, lingering in that way that came naturally now- familiar, unguarded. “cherry coke, extra ice,” he repeated, approving. “bold choice. he leaned a little closer, voice dropping just enough to feel private despite the noise around them. “and here i thought you just wanted an excuse to cut the line and flirt with me.” as the worker turned back toward him, alex finally made a decision. “coffee,” he said, then glanced at theo again, warmth softening his expression. “thanks for the assist. i owe you one.”

jostled among the thrum of spectators, it would be difficult for anyone to find a night like this boring. there's not a quiet area here. every corner is punctuated by the unmistkable thrum of the crowd. it's grown on her since being here - something that brings montrouge together, a chance to pause by familiar faces. before standing in the chaos of a jostling rinkside that threatens to blur every photo she'll get the chance to take, rowan's quiet focus on the cheetahs is a welcome respite from the atmosphere.

'ooh, you could cut the tension with a knife,' she quips, peering at rowan around a half-empty lemonade cup with raised brows. 'it's about setting intentions, right? start the season with a win. build momentum.' she moves from leaning back against the rails, turns to settle her elbows there instead as she faces towards the ice. she squints, pauses to study the bench. plenty of crossed arms, glances to study the other team. the nervousness isn't always so easy to hide. 'hmm, both? a shove or two can make for a good photo. but, there's lots of talent to showcase.' watching the cheetahs' warmup, a hand absentmindedly waves away rowan's apology. 'who do you think is worth watching tonight... in your expert opinion?'

rowan huffs out a quiet laugh, eyes never truly leaving the ice as maren talks, like she’s half-listening and half already ten seconds ahead of the play. “you say that like this town knows how not to put the entire season’s emotional weight on one game,” she plays, affectionate more than critical. “but yeah. purpose. momentum. all that good hockey superstition stuff.”

she shifts her stance at the railing, in her element with the surrounding of bodies and noise. this is home-ice chaos, and she wears it easy. at maren’s question, rowan finally looks over, thoughtful. “okay,” she says, lowering her voice like she’s letting maren in on a secret. “if you want drama, keep an eye on the third line- they’ve got something to prove and they know it. guys like that take risks. risks turn into shoves. shoves turn into great photos.”

then her gaze peaks back to the ice, chin tilting toward the bench. “but talent-wise? watch the defense tonight. first game jitters show up there first, and if they settle in early, that tells you everything about how this season’s gonna go.” a beat, softer, proud without being obvious. “they’ll hold.” she nudges maren lightly with her elbow. “i’m not saying that just because i grew up listening to my dad rant about blue lines and gaps, but… i am absolutely saying that because i did.” her smile warms. “you’ll know the moment worth shooting when the noise drops for half a second. that’s when something big’s about to happen.”

away from the lobby noise, skogen managed to finally let out a breath, leaning her back to a random wall for a smoke. " am i famous here? your annoying friend with no boundaries " she placed the cigarette on her lips for a drag before offering it to lodi.

"bad vibes or good vibes? there's a ton shit of tourists " st. agnes wasn't sam's favorite place in town, growing up it has always been too expensive or crowded for her. " i noticed yesterday after checking in on some boxes we got, there should be one left in stock, but there wasn't " she paused. " only me and two bartenders. "

lodi huffed a quiet laugh at that, shaking her head as she leaned in beside sam, accepting the cigarette when it was offered. “bribery is strategy,” she agreed easily. “i taught you well.” she took a measured drag, eyes lifting toward the ceiling for a moment before she exhaled, the tension easing out of her shoulders. “you’re not famous,” lodi said, amused. “you’re just… memorable. there’s a difference.”

at the question about the vibes, she glanced back toward the lobby, watching a cluster of tourists fumble with their coats and flutes. “neutral leaning good,” she decided. “busy, but happy. which is about as much as you can ask for tonight.” then her attention sharpened again, all warmth folding into focus as sam explained. “yesterday,” she repeated quietly. “one bottle unaccounted for, limited access.” lodi nodded once. “okay. don’t panic, and don’t accuse anyone yet. check delivery logs, then security footage if you have it. i’ll help you figure out how to handle it without it turning into a mess.”

a soft chuckle escaped sam. " do i? i've been told i can be quite persuasive " too much for her own good. those years sulking in the pain of retirement made her even more prone to recklessness, almost as if sam needed that rush of adrenaline once found in competition.

" i see... you're a responsible person, and this could get you in trouble " he was a principal, an authority figure of some sort, and she was, well, the worst company possible. " if you want me to walk away and pretend this was one huge mistake, than i would " blue eyes met his, not in a challenge, but rather a glimpse of understanding. " the town shouldn't like you any less for having some fun. "

perhaps they could meet in the middle, a strange night, but not a bad one. " one drink and talk, careful, that feels very reckless, next thing you know and we'll be breaking curfew" sam teased before her lips curled in a delicate smile. " we should get going then... " slowly she extended a hand to alex, an invitation. " what are we drinking? "

alex watched her for a moment before answering, really looked at her this time, the confidence, the restlessness under it, the honesty she wasn’t trying to hide. his expression stayed gentle, but something thoughtful settled in. “responsible doesn’t mean fragile,” he said quietly. “and i don’t need you to walk away to protect my reputation.” a small, rueful smile tugged at his mouth. “the town’s already decided who they think i am. one drink isn’t going to undo that.”

he let her words sit between them for a beat, then reached out and placed his hand on her's. not rushed, not hesitant- just deliberate. “one drink,” he agreed, tone lightening. “and talking. clearly dangerous territory.” as he started them toward the bar, he glanced at her again, amusement flickering in his eyes. “i’m thinking beer. something simple, no surprises.” a pause, then softer, more curious than guarded. “you? drinks on me.”

what no one had prepared him for was the sheer amount of activities you had to participate in as a parent. playdates, sports, arts, dance - the list seemed endless as sofía's interests changed with each new day. he'd long realized that, if he wasn't called into work, holidays were no longer for relaxing - but for whatever adventure had caught her eye. although nicolas supposed a picnic wasn't the worst way to spend the start of a fresh year, and as long as she was happy, he really had no reason to complain. having just had the chance to grab a much needed cup of coffee, he turned towards the voice, a smile quirking on the corner of the lips. "oh, most definitely." his expression is fond as he glances back at the little girl, clustered amongst a group of her friends as they work on crafting colorful journals for the new year together. "sofía wanted to stay up until midnight, then begged me to wake her up right before when she, predictably, started falling asleep around nine. really exciting night." "how about you?" it's not surprising to see alex here, families scattered around the square that probably would miss his familiar presence, but he doubts the man's reasons for coming are solely out of obligation alone. "i don't think i'd be forgiven if i left before the fireworks end, besides - it's not everyday we get to welcome in a fresh start like this. are you helping out with everything here or able to relax and enjoy?"

alex smiled at that, the kind that came easy when kids were involved, eyes following sofía for a moment as she leaned over her project with serious concentration. “that sounds about right,” he said softly. “kids have a way of planning these big, meaningful moments… and then falling asleep before they get to them.”

he lifted his coffee a little, as if in understanding. “i admire the commitment, though. staying up until nine is no small thing.” a laugh followed, low and warm. at nicolas’s question, he shrugged. “a bit of both, i guess. i helped set up earlier, made sure no one forgot mittens or hot chocolate.” his gaze drifted back across the square, familiar faces everywhere. “but i’m trying to be better at just… being here. enjoying it.”

he looked back at nicolas, something sincere settling into his expression. “days like this matter. not because they’re loud or exciting, but because they give people a chance to slow down and start again.” a pause. “and honestly? i wouldn’t leave before the fireworks either. some things you’re meant to see through to the end.”
