Small Sword

Dated: circa 1760

Culture: Dutch or French

The sword has a Rococo style silver hilt, cased and chased throughout with fluted borders to the heart-shaped shell, fluted arms of the hilt, plus some wrythen decoration to the grip, knucklebow and quillons. Decorations of shells are made on both sides of the pommel, the grip, and the central knucklebow. The blade is of flattened lenticular section at the forte, changing to flattened hexagonal section, blued and gilded for about half its length.

Hilts of this style were fashionable in the Western world during the Rococo period, circa 1730-70, and are associated with Dutch cutlers and those working in north-eastern France and Flanders as well as in the Rhineland. The form of the shell, known to scholars as of ‘boatshell’ form is contemporary with the Rococo style and encountered on both civilian and military swords of the mid-18th century.

It’s worth noting that Vitaliya had a brother (Nikolai, constantly called Kolya to avoid the way his full name sounded), though he died some years earlier -- he’s the reason she chose the surgical route instead of deciding to try to be a state alchemist, or agreeing to work in her family’s pharmacy.

She’s likely to mention him from time to time, as she was very fond of him, and prefers to dwell on the happy memories she has of him: he was a sunshine-boy, optimistic, smiling, always thinking and going and being a whirlwind of a person.

Though she misses and she mourns, she isn’t bitter or sorrowful: as long as she has the memory of him, all is well.

[✑] It would seem the family pharmacy was short-staffed yet again (and oh, it had been such since Kolya’s passing, but she wished not to dwell on that). It bothered her none to take upon her the deeds of her family: a delivery of medicine meant nothing to her but a reminder something she’d oft done in childhood to earn money for sweets and books.

She wears her standard attire: the all-black wardrobe, as if in permanent mourning, but in reality a common color to hide any stains her work could leave behind. A moment of freezing (the air felt dense for the moment, as if something were not quite well with the world), hazel eyes downcast as Vitaliya finds herself making an attempt to pass by someone she does not recognize. [✑]

[✑] All of them? Surely, he must have many drawers of those papers -- after all, Vitaliya is oft-teased for her “love novellas” by those who work around her.

And yet, she is pleased to know her words are kept close: she seldom speaks, so her inkbound voice in itself is worth the weight of that which she doesn’t verbalize, and to know those words are held dear is quite comforting.

Even if she can’t be there in body, her voice can stay by her beloved’s side. [✑]
