[ @ohaccident ] ft. ― ada & abel
today, abel got taken to the window. today, he heard the sound of rain hitting pavement and trees. he stood himself beside the open window where his sensors triggered every time the breeze hit above his lip, and his eyebrows, and his hair. a metronome ticked in the corner, his index finger tapping against the window sill in town. behind that, the old croon of a record filled the lab.
this was all very new. usually, he was in a room with no windows and bright lights and it had an immense lack of information. but right now, abel was bombarded with observations, it was exhilarating.
he knew he wasn't alone, he never was. there was always someone around with a tablet of some sort. they asked a lot of questions. perhaps this time, he was allowed one of his own. so he turned to the scientist fully, looking ada dead in the eyes. "why am i here?"
i only hire my most brilliant students, professor grimal promised, and you, my dear, are the brightest of them all.
ada believed him -- or rather, she wanted to believe him. she wouldn't consider herself to be naïve, but she must've been to some extent seeing as she accepted a job without knowing what it required. her father called her foolish while her mother praised her ingenuity. neither opinion mattered. as far as ada was concerned, she was an orphan.
"you're here because i thought you'd want a break," she answers plainly. "i don't like being stuck in that white room either." her electronic pen dances swiftly across the screen, jotting down her observations. she was paid (not very well, mind you) to take notes and nothing more. her brilliant mind, wasted.
kicking off the wall she leaned on, ada joins abel at the window. a small smile follows. "what's your favorite part? i like the smell of the rain. they call it petrichor." she learned to offer bits of information about herself first. it helped ease the awkwardness of conversation between human and being.

Sylvia Plath, The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath
I love characters with tunnel vision. False dichotomies. The sunk cost fallacy. Characters who are convinced of their utmost rationality and can even lay out their entire philosophy in logical, impersonal terms and convince others even though the whole of their actions, rationalised to hell and back though they may be, are spurred on by something entirely emotional (and this doesn't stop them from being right on the money about some things). Characters who are at once the most and least self-aware people ever. Characters who know the ins and outs of their psyche like a map they've memorised but can barely tell when they're experiencing a feeling.
