Empathy (2016) by Gianni Passeretti
I’ve been privileged to have entered this world with loving parents that taught me the value in being good to others. to always respect and embrace the ways people are different from one another. to seek whatever sets a spark within. and to always run toward it. to know that dark cannot exist without light and when you close your eyes, you close your mind. i’ve held on to these words and kept them close to me. wondering, wandering, seeking in others what I always end up finding: goodness. but beyond my belief that good outweighs bad, there are always new stories. new ripple effects caused by people who hurt people. extremists. the selfish and greed-hungry. the ones who close their minds to the differences of others- the same differences that I was taught from a young age to embrace. at what point did we turn our views into weapons and claim authority over human lives- lives of people who matter, who are loved and have every equal right to be here? it’s questions like these where I am shaken by the very principles i’ve been raised on. forced to knock down and re-build my values to try and see through the polluted lens of another. where i'm reminded of my own bewilderment of the human condition, and curious as to when and why we chose to make this more complicated than it should be. it's questions like these that leave me wondering how much better off the world would be if we learned to simplify our own self-narrative and let others live how they want and love who they want.

do whatever the fuck you want as long as you don’t hurt people.

08/01/16 - strangers aren’t so strange
if i should go- i’d first like it to be understood just how happy i am in this moment. the kind of happy that sits in the front of your brain and refuses to move. strangers pass me on the street. but they don’t feel strange at all. maybe it’s because they came into the world the same way i did. and upon our first moment on earth, our lives were not so different. you and i. do you realize we once shared the same knowledge? everything since is circumstantial. we pass each other with barely a glance. but we both have stories. individual battles that we are fighting. i want to tell you you’ll win. even though you don’t see me and have headphones in. i want you to see the world like i do today. to know there is more beauty to this place than you even realize. you just have to be patient and keep your eyes open. the birds. the trees. the sun on my skin. if i should go - please know that i saw this life as a gift. a gift that i tried to unwrap with grace everyday. that i tried to never take for granted. please know that i only ever wanted the same for you. sometimes life gets messy and it isn’t all so clear. but one day it will be. the world really is a beautiful place if you let it be.
