she’s never seen the ocean before. rivers, sure. ponds and the like. but never the magnificent and heavy weight of the ocean, the waves crashing on the beach, the winds threatening to pull the world straight into itself. 

she’s far from home, but frankie’s here, at least. she’d gone and fallen in love with some marine biologist, and they’d landed here, two kids in tow.

“you heard from jason?” frankie asks over dinner - steak and brussels sprouts. liv hesitates, pulling on her sleeves, thinking of the bruises beneath. 

“nah, not since i left. but we just ain’t, y’know, right for each other. not like you and dave.” 

“if you say so. well, you can stay ‘slong as you want, of course.”

that night, she lays in frankie’s guest bedroom on top of the plaid blankets, places her hand over the slight bump in her belly, and whispers, “we’re safe now, little one. promise.”
