This whole building is great, but I really love the brick pattern!!!!! 

Now known (officially) as the Health Professions Academic Building Jefferson Clinical Research Center, part of Thomas Jefferson University, the building opened in 1927 as a new office building for Philadelphia Electric Company (PECO), whose massive HQ next door had maxed out of space. 

There’s an absolutely wonderful article about it on Hidden City Philly: “Electric!” The article gives the history of the building as “illuminated architecture,” a building which opened with a complex lighting scheme designed to wow the city. Alas, it didn’t last.

Once complete, the project was considered a massive success. The Edison Building became a well-known Philadelphia landmark and Brainerd would be contracted to light up other structures, most notably the then-new Delaware River Bridge (now Ben Franklin Bridge). The fame, however, would be short-lived. By the mid-1930’s, taller buildings were built east of Broad near City Hall (one of which was also designed by Windrim), and Illuminated Architecture had become old news. The building was re-lit with a more conventional lighting scheme in 1938.
