Personal post: Words cannot express how incredibly disappointed and betrayed I feel by my country. It breaks my heart that so many people I know and love support a person whose policies, opinions, and speech that marginalize and hurt so many people, including those like myself. I didn’t expect to see our country moving backwards. I didn’t expect to fear for my unborn child’s future.
People keep saying to “get over it,” and “suck it up,” that it’s just an election. They say that the POTUS only has so much power to change things and that we’re making a bigger deal out of things than they need to be. But they don’t understand that political power or not, the POTUS has an influence on society. And this country already had plenty of issues that affect minorities, women, LGBTQ, immigrants, and less fortunate individuals as it is. And that was when people (for the most part) tried keeping their prejudices and hateful opinions to themselves. There is a legitimate and rational fear for those of us wondering what daily life will be like now, knowing that people have elected a leader who allows and encourages openly hating people. If the racial, sexual, economic, and safety issues we’ve harbored in this country were from when people thought they had to be considerate or censored in their actions and speech, what should I expect now that all concern is thrown out of the window and it is now fashionable to be hateful? It’s genuinely terrifying. I believe that God can bring about goodness and blessings out of any situation, even a negative one. So my disappointment lies not in Him, but in Americans and specifically, those who call themselves christians. My only hope for America is in Him and in those who still try to speak out, educate, and heal this country.
