Since 2022, I've been a huge fan of San and Hongjoong from "Ateez lore".
You know, the captain and his most devoted soldier, who is willing to sacrifice himself and, if necessary, pretends to be the leader to protect the real one?
Also in 2022, I started writing a lot of RPs with one of my best friends, and at some point I started wondering... where do "existing characters" end and where do OCs begin?
Although each of our RPs features a "San" and a "Hongjoong," their personalities often have little connection to "reality." In each story, they are given unique visual features like tattoos, scars, birthmarks, or hairstyles, not to mention their backstories that influenced who they are today.
None of these "characters" are the same, and the only things they have in common are their "faces."
For this reason, I've always struggled with how to tag the drawings I create for our RPs—are they fanarts of our OCs? Or maybe they're fanarts from "the Ateez AU"?
I even gave them names I've tried to use before, because I know that any kind of "shipping" in K-pop can evoke extreme emotions—Hongjoong is Ciro and San is Ilios; both names refer to the motif of the sun and stars, which turned out to be quite important to this whole... multiverse.
Tbh I don't consider it the same as shipping "real idols"? For me, it's more like... shipping two characters played by actors? It's a bit like seeing a photo of Robert Downey Jr. with Scarlett Johansson and perceiving it as a photo of Tony Stark and Natasha Romanoff 🤔

Sinners (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
I love how "Sinners" didn't villify the sinners in the movie. Sammie's father told him that playing music for "drunkards and philanderers who abandon their family responbilities to sweat all over each other" was a sin. And he was right about the kind of people going to the juke joint: Delta Slim is an alcoholic, and Pearline a cheater. It would have been easy to villify them, but the movie tells us that despite their flaws, they are humans worthy of love, respect and freedom.
Delta Slim drinks because he's traumatized by the horrors Black people of his time face. And he's kind and compassionate, encouraging and reassuring Sammie, and sacrificing himself to save everyone else.
Pearline literally saved Sammie's life and sacrificed herself to protect him, a boy she had only known for a day. It shows her kindness because she could have easily stayed back when Remmick tried to bite Sammy and not endangered her life more than necessary.
The movie shows us that preachers blindly condemning those sinners are wrong: Sammie is only alive because drunkards, philanderers and gangsters (Smoke) gave their lives to protect him. They are people, with flaws and qualities.
I love how nuanced the movie is: Sammie's father is not wrong about the kind of people Sammie wants to associate with and their potential bad influence, but he's wrong about them being evil and not deserving of respect.

Honestly I really hope we get so see more of Wreck, because so far he is the ONLY person who cares that Nice committed suicide. Like I love Moon she's great, but she knew this man for three years and didn't give two shits that he was dead and offed himself willingly.
I think it would be a waste to discard Wreck when he's the only person so far who seemed to give a shit about Nice as a person. Especially, because I think it would be a great narrative reminder to not only Lin Ling but the audience that, no he isn't just living out his hero fantasy. He's literally stolen someone else's life. Nice wasn't just a corporate brand that everyone wants to insist he was, but an actual person with loved ones who are going to be distraught when they find out he's gone.
Like I don't blame Lin since he's had no time to process any of this, but I would enjoy a slow-burn of him realizing just how insidious what he's being forced to participate in really is.
