Completely unbelievable and OOC that Sam didn't look for Dean when he was in purgatory. Terrible, lazy writing.
He should have looked for him and grown increasingly desperate and untethered. Nobody left to keep him in line, like in Mystery Spot when he's ready to kill a person and Bobby says he's too far gone. Or after Dean goes to hell and he's a train wreck. Now he's got even more trauma and is even more codependent with Dean.
When Dean gets back, Sam should be similarly not quite right, both pushed to their limits - Dean through survival and Sam through grief. Both lost a little more of their humanity.
Imagine the two of them, fire feeding fire. It would be destructive and beautiful.
