So I binged Start Up in one day, and by that I mean I exclusively watched Kim Seon Ho’s scenes and fast forwarded everyone else. I was a little hesitant to watch the drama after seeing everyone’s reactions and after watching I completely understand everyone’s frustration. Han Ji Pyeong is the only logical adult surrounded by immature children who are supposed to be genius adults. Ji Pyeong is the only one who acts while everybody else seems to just react (cry/whine) when things go wrong, blame Ji Pyeong for being mean, even though everything always goes the way he says would. And then they come crawling back when they realize he was right and ask him to fix everything. At first I thought Dal Mi was the only one who appreciated him and realized he was always right, and in a way she was but not for the right reasons. No offense but she was way in over her head when she started the entire journey with sandbox. Is she capable? Yes. But was she prepared? No. And instead she looks for Ji Pyeong in every corner, and he helps because he likes her. But she only really comes to him when she needs his help. Like how are you going to see a man that was badly beat up, who’s clearly upset, ask him to dinner but then not ask about any of that or the million other unspoken things between you two and instead ask him what should you do after being conned when you should’ve known better?? That behavior doesn’t make sense to me. And while I wholeheartedly believe Han Ji Pyeong is the better man and she should’ve ended up with him and not Do San, I don’t ship them. She only sees Ji Pyeong as a mentor and while she knows of all the things he does for them, she doesn’t appreciate it in the way he wants. I was so frustrated seeing this amazing man that is Han Ji Pyeong, pining over someone who didn’t look at him the way he deserved to be looked at. No one in this drama really appreciated Ji Pyeong the way they should have, except for the grandma. And honestly, i say give Han Ji Pyeong and Halmeoni the best couple award because all their scenes were the saving grace of this show. Their chemistry and emotions were everything. They were funny, loving, adorable, heartbreaking, and genuine. This post is a mess and honestly its bc this drama was a mess lol. They wanted to do so much but didn’t really do anything. The writing was bad because the so called main lead didn’t grow. Their attempt at the comedic trio best friends wasn’t well executed and annoyed me. They didn’t tap into the potential that is Kang Ha Na and her character. They made a character who should’ve been the main lead, the second lead who’s used for every single plot line and then basically thrown away at the end. And they literally don’t ever have an actual honest conversation regarding the letters that dominates all the lead characters’ lives/stories. The only reason I’m not completely mad about this drama is because I genuinely enjoyed every scene of Kim Seon Ho. He outshined everyone in every way: his character had the best story and was the most consistent, his acting was unmatched, he had chemkstry with every person he was on the screen with, the man literally made us ship him with an AI. And his face??? Those dimples??? That forehead??? His outfits??? Atleast his personal team in charge of his look was on point and did their job correctly. If anyone wants to watch this drama, do it for Kim Seon Ho. Otherwise, it’s not worth it.
