In this week’s Spotlight series, Emily Anne Epstein highlights the early photography of the Scottish-born photographer Harry Benson. Benson, who is the subject of a new documentary that explores the iconic images of his career, has photographed every U.S. president since Eisenhower, attended Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball, marched with Martin Luther King Jr., and documented the Berlin wall go both up and down.

Dear photographers, It is never okay to try and negotiate a model’s boundaries. If a model says something makes them uncomfortable, this is not up for debate. The model may (but is not obligated to) explain why their boundaries exist and how to better proceed while shooting but this is not an opportunity for you to try and convince the model otherwise. A model’s comfort zone exists as a matter of safety (regardless if you choose see it or not). As a photographer, you are in a position of power, it is part of your job to not take advantage of the model’s vulnerability. You are both in it to create good and genuine art. This will not happen if the model can’t trust you or doesn’t feel safe.
