Llewyn
The midshipman took in the older sailor’s expression and way of sitting, and frowned in worry, before stepping over and coming to sit next to him. “I don’t…I don’t think anyone is beyond help, sir. Is…Is this a bad day, for you?” @ohxhangxme
The sound that escapes him at the question is one that would be quite difficult to define but might best be described as a bitter and choked sob of a laugh… and then it had been nothing once more as he tries to pull himself together. After all, it’s not wise to show such weakness on a pirate vessel or any sort of ship, and it’s foolish of a grown man to cry.
“Aye. Someaught like that.”
Despite his words, ‘bad’ doesn’t even quite begin to describe what this day is to him, even a year later. He’d made the realization this morning that he’d still been counting the days since the day it happened, that some part of his mind had wanted to remember, to know.
He’s not entirely certain whether it had been that realization or the realization that it had now been a year, but regardless, it had left him in a sorry state. By some miracle or stroke of luck, he’d managed––until now––to avoid the rest of the crew.
And yet, of course, whatever divine favor of shred of luck he’d had, it seems, had at last ran out.
dcvilfish:
A singer.
The young mermaid swam closer, resting her arms on the edge of the little row-boat, peering curiously up at him. She truly was the loveliest creature; a vision of an angel. Everything about her was appealing, and beautiful beyond almost all compare. She gazed with curiosity around the men, wondering why they were out here on the water. Men didn’t like the cold, and it was not a warm night. Why would they be in these little boats, singing to mermaids? Her every sense was screaming, ‘do not go closer’, but she, for once, did not listen to sense. She was curious most about this singer, the man with the sad eyes. Other men sang in other boats, and other mermaids were drawn to their rough voices like moths to a flame, but she had eyes only for this one, wanting to know why everything about him all but screamed of s a d n e s s. “Do you want to get to know me, sailor? Is that why you have come? These waters…they are l o n e l y.” @ohxhangxme
He carefully watches her as she draws nearer the boat, as she pulls herself just enough above the water’s surface to lean against it, and he’s caught between his pulse practically humming in his ears and the awe inspired by her presence.
How is it that something so beautiful, something that seems so naïve and pure… can be so terrible, so deadly?
Knowing what he does about what will happen, there’s a heavy feeling in his chest, and he has the strangest urge to tell her the truth when she asks, to tell her to swim far away from men in general and pirates specifically and to take her people with her as she goes.…
But then he forces himself to think of the stories that others had told of the mermaids of Whitecap Bay, recalling to mind the horrors they had perpetrated…
“They’re lonely, the waters are, eh?” he repeats, and––despite his best efforts––there’s a change in his expression. Something that becomes at least a little less guarded. Almost openly sympathetic.
Lonely. That’s something he understands. All too well, in fact.
And yet still he has a part to play in the ‘good’ Captain’s plot, and he must play it well. He’s seen what Blackbeard does to those who cross him, after all.
Even as he waves a hand dismissively at the others on the boat and their chattering now about this singular visitor of theirs, his gaze remains on her as though transfixed, and he shifts ever so slightly closer to where she rests.
“I s’pose that my reasons for bein’ 'ere would depend. What would you want? D’you want me t’get t’know you?”
"Are you the one who sings?" Moonlight shimmering over the water, and a most bewitching young woman gazing at him from the surface.
@dcvilfish
He’d hardly believed the tales. The ones about mermaids. ‘Devilfish,’ they’d been called, said to have dragged sailors down to the watery depths and feasted on their flesh. When those older––and he’s realizing now, wiser––had spoken of the legends, he’d always merely snorted and shook his head, refusing to put much stock in it. He’d never been the superstitious sort, after all, though now, staring at the ethereal being in the water, he may well be reconsidering that stance.
The shock of seeing one so beautiful, of the existence of one such as her in and of itself––coupled with perhaps the smallest amount of fear, not for himself but for the others in the boat and perhaps even a little for the one before him––it takes him a moment to remember himself.
“… Oh. Aye. I be th’ one who was singin’.”
"Can I help at all?" Enter the bouncy seventeen-year-old Midshipman, now one of Barbossa's mingled crew. - Georgie
“I dun’ think so. I dun’ think tha’ anyone can. ”
After all, he’s been like this for some time now. He must be beyond help at this point.
"You are a pirate, I was Third Lieutenant. Now, we are just getting blind drunk in Tortuga. The fates are laughing at us." - Nathaniel.
@ofcadogans
“I dun’ b’lieve in th’ Fates.”
Certainly not. Belief in Fates would mean that he hadn’t made his own choices. That he isn’t really free. Believe in Fates would mean that Michael was supposed to die as part of some greater plan, and that couldn’t be true.
But rather than elaborate that to the one sitting with him, the one who had sat beside him unasked, he simply raises the tankard to his lips and tilts it back again. He doesn’t even notice the bitterness anymore.

[ starter for @theaccurscd ]
He’d never been cut out for His Majesty’s Royal Navy. He’d known that from the start, but his family was not a wealthy one, despite the fact that service to the Crown, service in the Navy, was their only trade of any sort, right back to its formation in the year 1660.
And so, he had followed in his father’s footsteps, and his grandfather’s footsteps, and his great-grandfather’s footsteps.
Only he had grown tired of it. He loves the sea––the crashing of the waves, the way the water reflects the sun in its daily journey from its rise to its set––but the confines of the Navy… It seemed enough to dull the senses of any man.
There was another on the ship of the same mind. A Michael Timlin of Cork, Ireland. Quite by accident the two had fallen in together, and quite not by accident, they had ‘disappeared’ when next the ship had made port. With their shared love of the sea, there really were few choices that would afford them any level of the freedom they craved.
And so, they found a ship that was in need of more crew, able-bodied men who were knowledgeable in the ways of the sea and of ships.
They became pirates.
While not all aspects of the life appealed to them, what little did not could be excused so long as the two of them could watch out for one another and that they could enjoy the freedom offered by the sea, by a ship, by the sweat of their brow and the strength of their backs. Truly, Llewyn was happy for a time.
But then one day, in a conflict with the Navy, Michael was killed. After losing his best friend and perhaps the one constant in recent years, Llewyn fell into depression. At their next port––London, of all places, under guise of being a merchant ship––Llewyn had disappeared, to a tavern and he’d not much left it after that point…
At least until he’d found himself aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge. A botched mutiny led by that damnable Sparrow, an almost death by mermaids, and a clash between nations had all preceded this. And now, here he finds himself sailing under Captain Barbossa, rumored to have been one of the most feared pirates ever to sail the seas.
And he’d been unfortunate enough to have been put off balance––and him without a drop of the drink since finding himself aboard the Revenge––and to have crashed right into the Captain while trying to bring charts to him. That had left him having to find his own balance only to immediately steady the other man as well, whether needed or not.
“M’ apol’gies ‘bout that, Cap’n. Seem to’ve lost me footin’.”
A few of the crew had already decided that Llewyn is ill-tempered, having already snapped at a few of them, though they had fair and truly earned the rebukes when they’d happened, but if the stories are true, being anything less than polite with the Captain he can hardly see ending well. Particularly when the collision had been his own damn fault.
