We tend to associate intimacy with closeness and closeness with a certain sum of shared experiences. Yet in reality total strangers, who will never say a single word to each other, can share an intimacy — an intimacy contained in the exchange of a glance, a nod of the head, a smile, a shrug of a shoulder. A closeness that lasts for minutes or for the duration of a song that is being listened to together. An agreement about life. An agreement without clauses. A conclusion spontaneously shared between the untold stories gathered around the song.

The legend of Julia Brown, the lesser known Louisiana Voodoo Queen.
In Manchac Swamp in Louisiana, a woman named Julia Brown was a resident, prophetess and Voodoo Queen. She was an ornery neighbor and most people avoided her unless needed, but they definitely respected her.
She enjoyed singing ominous songs that often predicted doom and terrible outcomes. They were eerily accurate and in 1915 she sang the most frightening song of them all. She kept repeating “One day I’m gonna die, and I’m gonna take all of you with me.”
She died within a few days of singing her new tune. The locals of the neighboring village to the swamp wanted to honor her life and death with a grand funeral to send her off. Over 200 people gathered, but they never got to leave.
A strong and furious hurricane struck the funeral and killed most of its attendants. They were buried in a mass grave in the swamp, and to this day bodies occasionally float to the surface. They say you can still visit Manchac swamp and hear Julia Brown singing her final song.
