nikki breaks my heart so bad because in the brief moments we see her before the wish kicks in, she's so cool and funny, clearly kindhearted, very driven about her future (telling bear about how she was going to quit her job to focus on her writing), and also very sure of herself as a person. ive seen people describe this movie as "mean-spirited" and I think thats so apt because it was a 2 hour long tragedy of the torture of this innocent girl, taking away everything she's ever had, including her own sense of self, putting her through unimaginable horrors, and leaving her with nothing except the three dead bodies of her friends, with the one who she trusted most being the one who did this to her. nothing for her to look for hope in, because she has nothing before her except a lifetime in prison or in an institution. it would be one thing if the movie ended on a note like weapons, where everything was over and there would hopefully be recovery somewhere down the line, but here, not only was the evil not committed by a random stranger but her closest friend, but she doesn't get any chance at recovery either. so goddamn tragic. on that note, if anyone can come up with some sort of fix-it for nikki please link it to me because I will be crying about this girl forever.
if i think too hard about nikki’s experience in Obsession i feel physically ill. imagine one second you’re just walking up to your house after a night out, and then the next, you’re looking out of your own body, but you’re not longer in control. you’re a prisoner to a terrible, unnatural version of yourself that only exists because of a choice someone else made. when you scream, nobody listens. when you claw your way out for long enough to explain that this isn’t you, nobody listens. when you beg the man who trapped you in this situation to put and end to it, to set your free, he just. doesn’t. listen. and then when you do finally regain control, all your friends are dead, and you are covered in their blood. because of a choice someone else made
//Spoilers ‼️ for the movie Obsession//
Nikki being the victim in this movie is literally not up for debate btw.
Bear f*cked up big time. He paid the price, sure, but not before causing a lot of damage and trauma around him. Especially to Nikki.
There are two key moments for me that clearly highlight how Bear is truly not a good guy and never was. At all.
Firstly, and most importantly, when Nikki asks him to kill her as her possessed self is sleeping and unaware of their interaction. This is Bear’s first very straightforward opportunity to fix his mess. If he truly cared about her and her wellbeing, he would take immediate action. Like kill himself. Sucks, but gotta do what you gotta do, man. But no, of course. Bear takes personal offence into the idea that she’d rather die than forcefully be with him. It’s pathetic and enraging. Let’s remind ourselves here that Bear is regularly r*ping her (and forcing other forms of intimacy on her as well), enslaving her mind and quite literally stealing her entire life from her. The notion of consent is simply nonexistent and he’s actively okay with that. Before everything spirals into total chaos, he just wants to alter his wish, not erase it fully. He still wants that control over her, whether she is happy or not. She pleads for liberation from this curse and Bear decides to victimize himself, be selfish again and then he walks away. Ruining his ultimate chance.
Secondly, the suicide scene. Here’s the thing… It’s too late at this point. He missed out on several opportunities to make things better and he kept on prioritizing his power over Nikki. It led him to a point of no return where his life is irreparably turned upside down, his two closest friends were killed (because of him) and Nikki’s possessed self represents a very real danger for him (all his fault, once again). There is only one way out of this: He needs to die. Even with this unavoidable truth, Bear manages to fail again. He swallows all the pills and a few seconds later, he cowardly tries to undo his actions. The storyline leads to him overdosing and dying regardless, but this moment is decisive to represent his true character. It still wasn’t enough, somehow, for him to end it all. Truth be, it was unfortunately too late for Nikki one way or the other. The trauma was just too massive with the murders and the self-harm. He ruined her entirely.
If you ask me, the title is about him being horrendously obsessed with her, not the other way around. His obsession led him there. He refused to take a risk and potentially get in the friendzone. This was unthinkable and impossible to accept for him.
And also, that sickening story she presents at the party… It’s not just to generate a deeply uncomfortable and eerie atmosphere, it’s not just to shock the audience with its content. It’s about them. It’s literally them. She mentioned feeling a sibling-like connection with him. Nikki is being abused and tortured by someone she considered a brother. This is a tale about his cruelty. This is her cry for help. And it breaks my heart.
Masterpiece of a movie, truly.
Hi yes I'm still thinking about these two pages and about how Nakajima Atsushi really is the protagonist of all time.
Nothing could ever justify the orphanage director's treatment of Atsushi. Nothing could ever justify the pain and abuse Atsushi faced at the director's hand. But it is undeniable that the director has played a significant part in shaping who Atsushi is presently and has also aided him in times of need. It ties into BSD's recurring theme of how your past does not define you, but you also cannot flee from those memories because they have fundamentally influenced so many facets of your life — and acknowledging said memories is the first step to healing from them.
The director has been haunting Atsushi all this time and Atsushi so desperately wants to purge his voice from his mind, but he's also never lived a life where the director's presence doesn't plague him. What would he do once the person whose actions have shaped who he is today is finally gone? The director died and Atsushi cried because people tend to cry when their fathers die and now Atsushi is verbalising all of his loathing for his abuser in a way he couldn't for so long and yet he’s horrified by the prospect of being rid of his influence.
And the way Atsushi’s eyes are concealed from the reader until the director tells him that he’ll be gone “as early as today, even”, and there’s so little light in Atsushi's eyes when they’re finally revealed to us. The way they reflect these conflicting emotions within Atsushi surrounding the director's declaration — he'll finally be free of the very person responsible for so much of his pain and trauma, and yet that person has been such a significant part of his life that a world in which his abuser won't haunt him is unfamiliar and terrifying to him.
And I just. God. I can’t.
The SxF anime is just very lovingly made, and you can see it in the many interesting directorial choices WIT and Cloverwork make. One of these in the Very Disastrous Date episode, where Twilight tells Yor why he appreciates her as Anya's mama.
In the manga, we see what seems to be one of Twilight's memory of his wife and daughter smiling at each other in a panel. It is a sweet scene.
The anime extends that scene, and adds color - literally and metaphorically - to Twilight's feelings for his family. Anya is shown jumping up and down in joy, and Bond is there too. They are also all at home, in a place filled with light.
The biggest and most interesting addition here though is Twilight - he is washing the dishes in the kitchen as he watches his daughter, his wife, his dog having fun together. What he's doing is purely domestic - not for the mission, just very husband-y stuff. Importantly, it's also what Yor believes is the one thing she can contribute to their marriage - she is good at cleaning and nothing else... well, that's how she thinks of herself anyway. But Twilight can clean the dishes on his own. He doesn't need Yor. Or he does, but it's not because he needs a Model Wife who Does Chores. Yor is important to him because she fills their home with warmth - I mean, look, she literally takes up most of that shot there. Yor is important to him because Anya loves her. Yor is important to him because...?
And Twilight's smile-not-smile that he indulges himself in a brief moment every now and then when he's not Loid Forger. This is the authentic him, basking in the his family's happiness. Yes, his family.
Little tweaks and additions in the anime do a lot in adding texture to the series. I think it's also one of the reasons Anime Twilight comes across more as a man who feels deeply, much more so than Manga Twilight. Which is saying a lot, because the man is already a complete fool for his family in the manga.
The dishes. Anya's jumps. His smile... it all adds up. Even as he's not able to full verbalize how he feels on that park bench that night, what he tries to tells Yor - it is honest, it is authentic, it is as close to Twilight offering up his heart. And more importantly, him realizing it still beats after all these years of wandering as a shadow 🥲
I've been thinking about why Yor feels cleaning is the only way she can contribute to the marriage...maybe the answer (besides her upbringing as a weapon) is in the times she's living in, the 60s.
My parents grew up in that time and some of the ideas they have about women and marriage are very outdated. Things like, "a woman should take care of the home completely on her own and exist only to serve her husband."
Maybe that's why Yor thinks she's not qualified to be a wife. She doesn't fit the traditional wife model of the times. Even Nightfall seems to think that traditional role is the way things should be and also that she would be perfect for the role because she's willing to serve Twilight unconditionally. But have you noticed she's always behind him instead of next to him?
But Twilight doesn't want or need a slave. He wants an equal, someone who is everything he's not.
That's why he appreciates Yor's sweet personality. She fills his life with a much needed sunlight.
Sometimes that's exactly what we need: something outside the box.
That's why I'm not such a fan of fics where they set the story in the present day (although it's funny to see the forgers interact with modern technology lmao), a lot of spy x family things only work in the context of the 60s.
