How to shoot a Brand Look Book By: Imani W.
A Look Book is a set of cohesive images that properly highlight the clothing brand and the overall aesthetic of the products they are selling. There are several different things to consider when trying to shoot a Look book such as communicating with the brand itself or the person spearheading the concept, creatively coming up with the right ideas that represent the brand, figuring out the clothing for the shoot, executing the shoot and editing based on the aesthetic of the brand.
When communicating with the brand or the person in charge of the clothing, its important to discuss who the brand is and what they represent. This will give you ideas of the best way to shoot the clothing. Find out who is the target market for the brand as well as how they will be selling the clothes.
As you come up with ideas for shooting the brand, its good to run them by the people who are responsible for the brand to make sure they like the concept. Its good to find ways that will make the brand stand out. This is good for the brand as well as for you because it shows your creative artistry.
The brand will provide the proper clothing but it may your responsibility to figure out who are the best models to wear the clothes. Understanding the style of the brand is key in doing this. Who tends to buy the clothing and what do they look like.
So now you have found the right models, location, overall concept, and now its time to shoot. When shooting, one thing to remember is to take your time. Assuming that you already understand how to work a camera and settings, your primary focus needs to be bringing the concept to life. Work with the model, talk to them while your shooting, to let them know if they need to change positions or facial expressions. Be relaxed and don't be afraid to push the limit a little. For example if you come up with a cool idea while shooting, go for it. You can always figure out if it works out in post production.
Now you are at the final stage of completing the look book and now its time to edit. Strive to edit with the product and brand in mind. Does the overall aesthetic of the brand look more saturated or desaturated? Does the brand tend to visually show more warmer tones or cooler tones? These are some of the questions you should ask yourself while in the editing process. Some colors may need to be highlighted more then others depending on the product. One thing that I believe is important when editing as well as shooting is to make sure you incorporate your own style. This brand chose you to shoot the look book because they like your style. Make sure you show it it.
Samuel Delany
Babel-1author. black scoff
In the midst of the Black Panther movie soon to release bringing a Afro-centric vibe, its only right to talk about the Legendary black scifi author Samuel Delany. From one of his most popular books Babel-17 to him being inducted into the Science & Fiction Hall of Fame in 2002, Delany has planted his foot in the storytelling world.

Nice Romantic Drama short.
Simple but strong short film. This short was about two people who went to visit there deceased parents at there grave sight. From them visiting there family members, they ended up having an emotional converasation based on there deceased family members. The acting and the dialogue was great, and cinematography was good as well.
Opus 1 Festival in Columbia, MD
The Opus 1 festival was a mix of art, music, and technology in which to create a connective experience through seeing, hearing, and feeling in the woods of Columbia, MD. The experience was one that I will never forget. Before going, I did some research to see what the festival would consist of, but I can say reading about it and being there were totally different things.
Baby Driver
Baby Driver was one of the most entertaining movies of the year. Edgar Wright does a phenominal job with directing a film thats a combination of an action, romantic drama with a hint of a musical. The film grabs your attention from beginning to end with several plot twist. Its a must see.
Future of Film Conference
Going to the Future of Film Conference, I was looking to hear from successful filmmakers and their journey in the world of film. I wanted to learn some of the obstacles they experienced while in pursuit of their aspirations. I can say that going to the Future of Film conference, I was able to learn those things and much more. I was surprised at the amount of people who were working in different fields coming together to talk about how they could connect to the film industry. There were entrepreneurs, community leaders, directors, producers, cinematographers, and more. The conference was field with great discussion and I was also glad to see several familiar faces.
2017 Emmy’s
The 2017 Emmy’s was definitely an entertaining one. The host Stephen Colbert set the vibe of the show with his opening monologue which consisted of many jokes targeting Donald Trump. From there Donald Trump ended up being one of the main talked themes of the show. There was also history made from some of the winners such as Donald Glover who was the first African American to win in a comedy series director category from the hit show Atlanta. Also you ave Lena Waithe and Aziz Ansari who shares awards for best comedy series writer category. Thats just examples to show the diversity that was represented in the Emmy's this year. As far as fashion, Zoe Kravitz stole the show on the red carpet with her slim, colorful, feathery dress. Besides the fact that Issa Rei may have caught some slack for mentioning she's only rooting for black people at the awards, the shows was pretty entertaining.
Jack & Jill Photo/Film Roman
My Photo Roman will be on the story of Jack and Jill except with a twist. The story will evolve around greed. Instead of Jack and Jill going to fetch a pale of water, they both will be stranded in the middle of nowhere because of a flat tire. After time of being stranded, Jack and Jill will become very dehydrated. They randomly come across a bottle of water at the top of a hill and they begin to race towards it. Instead sharing the water with one another they fight over it. As a result, they both end up falling down the hill and the water was left spilled open into the grass. At the end of the day they realize greed and unselfishness will get them nowhere, but with working together they was able to resolve the car issue and go find water.
The show Ballers on HBO is one of my favorite series to watch at the moment. It feels real, its dealing with sports, and the story draws you into the characters. The show provides a nice balance of drama yet a hint of comedy. Also The Rock (a very talented individual) does a great job with making his character relatable to the audience. One of my favorite aspects about the show is that it gives you peek at the behind the scenes of being an NFL player. The money, fame, entourage, it can all be hard to handle. Even though the show may be a little dramatic with its approach to that topic, it does a good job with entertaining as well as providing a bit of a learning experience to what the behind the scenes NFL experience may be like.
