garrick:
garrick hated events of all sorts. sporting events. assemblies. concerts. balls. —anything really, that required large groups of people to gather in a particular place for an abnormal amount of time; assuming, that the large group were people he rarely spent his time with, he hated. garrick preferred small groups and open spaces. this ball had neither. but, his sister had dragged him into coming. so he picked out his nicest suit robes and loitered in the corner with an untouched drink in his hand. no one had spoken to him besides francine until ariel made her way to his corner, “yes.. well.. wasn’t really by CHOICE. —but, here i am.”
of all the people to have picked, it had to be him. not that she particularly had anything AGAINST garrick ollivander ( he was merely a familiar face in a sea of strangers ), she had just hoped for someone with a bit more enthusiasm. though usually ariel was the life of the party, it seemed that without alcohol and with an incredible shock to her system --- what, with being in hospital for a week --- she was rather the opposite. and by finding someone with a similar streak to her old self, she had hoped to find more life in this ball. but alas, she had been the one to strike conversation with garrick, and deep down she knew it would be rude to leave. ❝ if you’re looking for some fun, i’m sure the punch has been spiked already. might make you feel a bit better about being here. ❞
edgar:
edgar couldn’t help the wide-eyed nature of his smile, the instinctive expression colored by some actual surprise that it was a response, and not something he was offering with no expectation of return. ariel was looking … well, happy, he supposed. ( an assumption made with equal parts caution and optimism. ) it made him wonder what the situation called for; expansive, jovial greetings were the usual flavor he took up with her, something met with scorn that he suspected was covering some amusement — though one could never tell with. but he didn’t want to cut a good start off on the legs just for the sake of routine. who knew, maybe she just hadn’t realized it was him. after all, formal dress wasn’t really edgar’s norm. but the smile was all he went for, an a warm tone when he returned the pleasantries. “ thanks, ariel. I’m glad to have run into you, too. enjoying yourself? “
it was funny --- usually ariel couldn’t STAND edgar’s constant enthusiasm. it was relentless, and she would ( usually ) much rather stay in her bubble of cynicism. yet, she couldn’t help but feel like she owed him a smile. her week in the hospital wing under ‘ supervision ’ had been dull, to say the least, but she had hardly expected for anyone to visit, yet alone bring a smile to her face. edgar’s presence ( though entirely unasked for ) had had a positive effect on her, and though she would perhaps never admit it, he had left her that day with a heart just that bit lighter. the bastard. and now that they were both here, for the moment alone, at the ball, it would surely be right to give him at least one night of returned pleasantries. ❝ i mean, it would surely be better if this juice was mixed with something like VODKA, but i’m on a bit of a self-professed cleanse --- so, y’know, it’s alright. ❞
ariel had spotted the girl from across the room, the intricate black dress having been the first thing to catch her eye. she had to admit, there was a small moment of hesitation where she had to wrack her brains to try and remember the girls name, but once she had it, there was not a pause in her step as she made her way over to her. ❝ hey. frankie, right ?? i just wanted to say you look STUNNING in that dress. ❞
@francollivander
ariel fiddled absentmindedly with the straw resting in her juice --- a juice that was, surprisingly, completely free of alcohol. she’d put emma on the special mission of keeping her away from the ( soon to be spiked ) punch and had charmed her own cup to constantly refill with pure orange juice and so far, she wasn’t even regretting it. actually, for the first time in a long time, ariel felt quite CALM, eyes scanning the floor with a small ( genuine ) smile gracing her features. this --- this level of peace --- was not something she had felt in months, and though the ball seemed to be picking up in steam, she remained quiet and unassuming, simply enjoying her time spent with friends. as she took another gentle sip from her cup, her eyes locked on a familiar face not to far away. widening her smile ever so slightly, she moved towards them with an enviable level of grace. ❝ nice to see you’re here, ❞ she began, fixing her gaze back on the dance floor.
ariel stretched out across her bed, a soft ( satisfied ) grunt falling from her lips. sighing, she turned her attention to the girl propped up at the end of her mattress, resting her head atop her arm so she could comfortably maintain polite conversation. ❝ you first, c’mon --- what’s been goin’ on ?? ❞

edgar:
edgar smiled at ariel, pleased and wondering if he shouldn’t be that she was letting him stay; even stuck in the hospital wing he had no doubts she would kick him out, if she really wanted to. hell, she still might, and he’d just smile another goodbye at her when the time came. he was aware enough to know he wasn’t ariel’s favorite person, but any way he could make her stay here a little brighter was worth it — especially if she was at the point of actively engaging with him. he turning in his seat, slumping and slouching and shifting until he could comfortably face ariel. “ well, wouldn’t you know, I do have my fingers crossed for background dancer number two, “ he cocked his head, feigning seriousness to the best of his ability. “ after all, how could I ever want to play danny if it meant you might end up missing out on all the fun? “
she had to admit --- his smile was nice. but FUCK if it didn’t get under her skin. she wasn’t even entirely sure why it was that he bugged her so, in fact it was probably for no reason at all, but now that he was here and she was bored out of her fucking mind, she was just going to have to get over it. jesus christ... when had it come to this ?? watching him wriggle in his seat, her brow furrowed slightly, a small scoff falling from her lips. ❝ you a’ight there ?? ❞ at his words, she couldn’t help but smirk, another odd chuckle / scoff sounding from the back of her throat. ‘ all the fun ’ --- that wasn’t exactly how she saw it. in fact, she had very little interest in the musical, but it brought her a small amount of joy to tease. ❝ now that i think about it, i reckon you having anything to do with it might deter me. ‘sides, wouldn’t you rather be in the audience pestering me ?? ❞
adie:
“ ah don’t worry ‘bout it. i’m plannin’ on blackmailin’ the castin’ director, so it’s basically in the bag. ” he offered her a mischievous grin, a spark visible in his eyes as he casually leaned back in his chair. his muddied boots soon found the edge of her bed, the dirt having dried over a few hours, so ultimately proving less than dangerous to the white sheets. “ i dunno. just looked for my own name, yeah ? because really, who else matters ? ”
“ now why would i do that ? to make ya feel better ? ‘cause darlin’, i don’t know you. why would i care ? ” adie finnigan had always been a fan of inside jokes, the words falling from his mouth with ease. but despite the humorous tone of his words, he mentally switched to a more serious subject. “ i’ll sing for ya … but ya gotta so something for me in return. ”
❝ now THAT’S a plan. ❞ the smile on her lips was ( finally ) genuine, just as mischievous as his. it was perhaps the first time she had smiled in a week and boy was it welcome. sitting up just that bit straighter, her hands reached over to fiddle with his laces, tying and untying them as an absentminded form of distraction --- this was the kind of calm that she wanted to feel.
❝ i’m, like, certain we’re the only two people who matter in the world. trust me, it’ll be in the history books and everything. ❞
his words managed to draw a real chuckle from parted lips, her mind drawn back to months ago when they had been in such a similar position and those words had been spoken for the first time. there was a sort of nostalgic irony in knowing that they were all but back where they started, especially considering all that they had been through up until now. the soft smile on her lips now tinted with sentiment, she merely nodded in response to his request. ❝ anything you want. --- a n y t h i n g. ❞
its my god given bisexual right to be dramatic
aria:
when ariel glanced her way, aria’s own eyes returned quickly to the book propped in her lap. her fingers shifting to turn the page as the blonde spoke, shoulder shrugging in answer. the play was a small blip on the fringes of her radar, unlikely to watch and even less likely to participate. “ not really. “ she assured the other girl, voice smooth as she gave her attention to gracefully unfolding herself from the uncomfortable hospital wing chair and perching on the edge of ariel’s bed. she studied the other girl for a moment, eyes narrowing slightly before she pulled her fine leather bag onto her lap, “ … i brought you some things. in case you were bored up here. “
placing a small smile across her lips, ariel turned her head away from the slytherin, reaching up to tie her hair in a neat ponytail that barely tickled her neck. ❝ you can’t really expect much from a muggle musical in a magic school now, can you ?? ❞ she let out a light chuckle, shuffling down her bed and resting her back against the pillow as she looked back at aria. it was sweet of her to visit, and she knew it, she could only wonder why. why would anyone visit her, frankly, when all she was doing was rotting away in a hospital bed that she’d put herself in. it was ridiculous. kind of stupid, actually. but still, she was here, and ariel had to admit she was rather grateful for the company. glancing down at the bag on the girls lap, she widened her smile widened ever so slightly. ❝ i’m bored out of my fucking mind --- thank you. ❞

edgar:
“ callbacks were indeed posted, my friend, “ edgar said, pulled out of his … well, it wasn’t an examination. concerned wonderings, maybe; either way, it reminded him that ariel was probably not happy edgar had just been looking at her for a time. no judgement in his gaze, but, all the same he was quick to offer her a lopsided grin and deposit himself in the chair next to her. concerned wonderings had likely hit the nail on the head. he couldn’t help but worry, about everyone. people he was friends with, people who were wary to accept his friendship, people who he was sure he’d hate if he hated. there were few people he wouldn’t want to check in on, but he’d been making overtures of friendship towards for ages now; he’d feel empty to not come now when she might actual want some company. “ I don’t know about noteworthy, but I did get some callbacks myself. “
in any other, normal circumstance, ariel would’ve ignored edgar for as long as she possibly could, his attempts at conversation normally having been met with a look of disgust and a flick of her hair. but he’d just been sitting there for some time now, and it wasn’t like there was anyone else to talk to, and she was growing incredibly bored of listening to her own thoughts, so perhaps he was her last shot at distraction. wincing slightly at his use of the phrase ‘ my friend ’, she shifted so she was facing him, ( regrettably ) engaging in the conversation as best she could. ❝ and who for ?? background dancer number two ?? or maybe even TEEN ANGEL ?? just not danny zuko, please, or i don’t know if i’ll be going... ❞
adie:
adie was there. of course he was there. and he wasn’t sure what it was, but the moment he heard about her placement in the hospital wing, he booked it in her direction. this play bullshit had kept him busy for a few hours in the day, but he always found his way back. without fail.
he was worried about her. t e r r i f i e d. but still, he smiled.
“ y’know yer a piece ‘o shit when ya get called back for the role’a doody. ”
“ they made me sing an’ shit. ya would’a loved it. ”
she didn’t feel so obliged to talk to him like she did the others --- she WANTED to. no matter what the other was going through, it seemed the pair were rather good at keeping each other distracted, at drawing out a smile --- the kind of friendship she’d always craved.
pushing out a smile ( hoping it would soon become genuine ) she shifted her body so she was better looking at him. ❝ DOODY ?? oh that’s just priceless. now you better get it, otherwise i’m just not gunna go. who got called back for frenchy ?? ooooh, tell me it’s someone good. ❞
❝ you SUNG ?? alright, i need a reenactment --- right here, right now. ❞
peter:
peter was all too familiar with hospitals by now, what with moony’s monthly visits and now his dad, but that didn’t mean he was any more comfortable with them. he ran a hand through his hair as his quill half-heartedly scratched across the parchment of the essay he was working on, his gaze flickering up to the blonde girl in the hospital bed every so often. when she spoke, his gaze jerked up to meet hers, uncharacteristic concern apparent in his expression for a fraction of a second before his face split into a wide grin and he set his quill aside, leaning back in his chair. “ — well, i’ll have you know this guy got TWO callbacks. count em and weep – not one, but TWO. ” he furrowed his brow and bit his lip with a deep sigh, looking into the distance dramatically, although the effect was ruined slightly by his lips still forming a slight smirk. “ — guess they recognized STAR TALENT when they saw it. ” he was glad she was talking now. peter pettigrew was a good listener, and he was good at being goofy – playing off the other person to get a smile on their face. what he wasn’t good at was comforting suicidal girls.
a small smile quirked at the edge of her lips at his enthusiastic response, a smile she wouldn’t quite admit to forcing, though the roots of it were genuine. peter ( like all the others that had passed through ) was trying his best to keep her mind distracted, to keep her heart light despite the circumstances of her current situation, but just because she was feeling more relaxed, it didn’t mean she was so willing to flash a grin. pushing a small chuckle past her lips, she leaned over to affectionately punch his nearest arm. ❝ nicely done, pete. reckon you’ll be a STAR before we even know it. ❞ leaning back on her bed, she paused for a moment --- her quick remarks were not so easy to come by these days, and it felt like she had to work to come up with something that was even close to what she would normally quip. ❝ don’t go getting famous and forgetting me now though, hey ?? i’d like to reap the benefits of a superstar friend as best i could, please. ❞
