heated rivalry + text posts // part four.
we all laugh but the reason why milkshake calls that thing the tallest waterfall in the world, is so that none of them get too moved by it and want to see more. the whole episode, the whole reason they are outside is so that the management can say "there is nothing else to see, no waterfall more beautiful or taller than this, you've been outside once and it was cold and it sucked and you saw the coolest thing there is to see and that's it. why would you not be happy with your work life now?"

A kind reminder that in Mumbai there's a restaurant where reserved tables don't hold up a sign that reads "reserved" but rather a sign that reads "promised" and I think that's beautiful.
obsessed with the Helena and Irving parallel and what it says about the aspects of our identity we think are fundamental (but aren't)...
Like Outie Irving assumes his Innie is just as radically anti-Lumon as he is. He assumes his hatred of Lumon is something ingrained in his personality! That's why he stays up at night drinking coffee and making paintings, because he hopes that when his innie dreams about the testing floor, he'll say "okay bet" and start exploring. That's what Outie Irving would do, after all. But he miscalculated! His hatred of Lumon isn't inherent--- his desire for meaning and art and spirituality is inherent. That's what his hatred for Lumon is built on. But in a world where there's no meaning outside of Lumon propaganda, of COURSE his innie would become ridiculously devoted to the company.
And Helena!! She is the corporation, that's her whole identity. She presumably assumed that Helly would be just as pro-Lumon as she is. But she miscalculated too! Her devotion to the company isn't inherent, her headstrong and entitled nature is what's inherent! And in a world where she's denied any agency whatsoever, that manifests as rebellion.
It's the same dynamic flipped on its head. They both sent their innies in there with opposite intentions--- one to take down the company, one feed the company's expansion--- only to realize that rebellion and devotion aren't inherent characteristics. Their innies have become the exact opposite of their outie selves, while still being exactly the same!! Because even though your personality is inherent, the values you hold are determined circumstantially. OUGH IT'S SO GOOD.
I'd like to add to this.
In Woe's Hollow (s2e4) all of MDR is at a point where they're aware of the differences between them and their outies. Helly and Helena are fundamentally at odds, the hyper-competent Dylan has an outie who is "kind of a fuck up", and kind-hearted Mark is, on the outside, a sad drunk - and even then, knowing that his outie's wife is alive, he still has sex with Helly. That is to say, all of them are not just severed, but downright in conflict with who they are outside.
But not Irving. Not anymore.
Losing Burt has made him anti-Lumon just like his outie, and it's at this point that we see them becoming alike. It's at this point that we see that they're the same person. There's the drive, the determination, the disdain towards Lumon, but also other aspects of outie Irving that survive in innie Irving.
Innie Irving is a good artist. Of course. His outie paints all the time.
Innie Irving is fit enough to keep up with the "Helly" and Mark during the hike, then sleep outside, and then overpower "Helly" without much effort, all despite his age. Of course. His outie has served in the military.
Innie Irving is able to pick up the inconsistencies in "Helly"'s behaviour. Of course. His outie has been doing detective work with excellent results.
Out of all people, the meek old man that is innie Irving turned against his whole world, first in pain, and then in the pursuit of something greater - freedom, even if he may never experience it. And when he went out, he did so on his own feet, basking in a sunlight previously unknown to him, with a smile on his face. Whole, happy, contented.
With severance season 2 around the corner it’s time for me to share the time I accidentally watched 4 minutes of an episode on mute and thought it was a brilliant way to show the sensory deprivation experienced by the innies
HAPPY ROMAN BREAD DAY Y’ALL!!!!!!!
Apparently Rowling hasn't tweeted since her cyber bullying meltdown, and I'm thinking that might be related to Imane Khelif's lawsuit, and now I'm wondering if we can give her an additional gold medal for being the first person to ever get JK to finally shut the fuck up.
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, to listen to doctors and get my flu vaccine and any shots i could because they remembered Before.
then they started fighting Covid precautions.
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that the ozone was disappearing and the earth was dying and we needed to recycle and save the planet.
now my parents think climate change is a myth.
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that racism was a plague, that we had to love and accept everyone, that we should never judge before walking a mile in their shoes.
then they told me that protesting for my Black siblings was wrong.
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that we needed to give to the poor. working at soup kitchens. making quilts. collecting food and money and supplies. building houses. because it was the christian and just plain right thing to do.
now they look at me, on food stamps with their grandchildren, and lament the "welfare state".
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, that it was easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and that any rich man, especially an immoral one, should never run our country.
you can guess who they voted for.
i remember adults telling me, as a kid, so very much.
when did they forget?
Time to bring this back. Again.
Apparently this is evergreen. Dammit.
I remember adults telling me, as a kid that girls can be equal to boys in all fields including athletics. Now, they consider girls to be delicate flowers who could never hope to compete against boys.
