Blogpost #8 Typography

Last but not least My blogpost about Typography 2. First of all I have to say that I really liked joining the class and I didn’t expected, that it would be that challenging for me. But sometimes typography problems are much harder to change than other design issues. You have to check small details, because just one type crime could ruin your whole artwork.

When I worked on my type-poster, I can see and feel quite a huge impact to myself in just 3 weeks. Today we had to let critique our poster again, but it was worth it. I guess I could change it two or three more times anyway, so I’m happy due is not until Friday! In the attached pictures you can see my actual status and the progress which made me solve the issues about my first draft in project 2.

Blogpost #13 Packaging

Finalized packaging - ROYAL

I’m done with my packaging and I’m really satisfied about it. Of course I could have done some more, like use golden paper to print on - but when I refer on my options, I made it. I decided not to make the bottles matte because it just didn't look valuable in the implementation. I had first matte the bottles and asked friends of mine how they would experience the product if they poured something out of the matted material. Most of them had the impression that they wanted to have a look at the wine first. Therefore I have now chosen very darkened bottles, through which you can still easily see through.

I would really like to continue on this project when I’m back home.

Blogpost #7 Typography

Get out of your comfort zone and put your knowledge / your ideas into real effort. We had to present our first draft of the actual Typography-Poster, but not just in front of the class - we had 3 guests, which gave us pretty honest and straight-forwarded feedback. In my case it was the best thing that could happen in this stage of poster-design, because my first one felt like a mess. Honestly it was a mess, but the problem I had was to fall back into old pattern - overanalyze something, I don’t have to. Because deep inside of me, I already knew how I should design my manifesto. Research is a good thing, and always be sure about anything you design, but what I’ve learned in just one semester on the VIU. Don’t overthink! It helps you a lot. I always had a pressure to hand in something that is just done in one week! How could you do that? How could that be professional and perfect designed? I were just so used to the slow pace at my school home. It felt like a whole relief to redesign my poster in just 20? Minutes in the end of class. You only have to look at my result - it speaks for itself: A difference like day and night. Now it's time for the final design, which hopefully will be much easier for me to handle now - I am optimistic that I will design a quite good type poster.

Blogpost #6 Typography

Sketch until you find the perfect idea. Don’t stop, add simply every Idea that comes in your mind even if it seems dumb. Thats what Nancy wanted us to do in this class. Add, Remove, Scale - just in a few minutes. I felt kind of overwhelmed in the first moment because we hadn’t that much time, but in the end it was a such a good progress. It helped me a lot to focus on the important things and that is something I should convey to all my design projects. If I got time pressure it’s easier to catch the right idea and to follow your intuitive sense. We also had to present our manifestos in front of the class. The final manifesto I’ve chosen: “Have the courage to be disliked. Be outstanding.” It stands for being the black sheep, for not being everybody's darling in the first moment, for not being the one that accept everything and everyone in their life, just to be like everybody else, for not going out of your comfort zone - you can convoy this exactly to typography. Of course there are typefaces like Helvetica, that (fairly) everybody likes and you can put it into practice in so many different fields. But I cant understand how people “love” this typography, because it’s simple and pretty, of course it is! But in my mind a font needs more character. Just as a human needs.

Blogpost #11 - packaging

Before I started with the digital conversion for my french wine brand, I built a moodboard, more precisely a visual brief. It shows the customer how he can imagine the product in the implementation, through the color spaces, typography or simply: the composition which is created with the bunch of pictures.

At first I just created a mockup of the bottle-series. Like you can see on the moodboard I would like to use wrapped bags as packaging (see sample image below) around the designed bottles. However, I would like to finalize the label, so that I can transfer it to the actual packaging.

In general I tried to work a little more minimalistic without icons. After several times of looking at it, the result is kind of too straightforward or not individual enough, there is still that certain something missing. But at this point it's hard for me to build on it, because I had already mentally distorted the "Crown-Icons" idea. These days I will try to create a suitable crown each and try to personalize the design more, to make it more individual.

I’ll might change the colors of the bottles. Maybe I’ll try to make them all black, so the so the viewer must concentrate completely on the design and should be able to define the color quickly anyway.

Blog Post #5 - Typography

DISCOVERY Phase: The type poster 

When I design, present or tell someone something, I was usually afraid. Fear of saying something that is wrong. To create something that someone might not like. Most of the time it wasn't really good, because I wasn't honest with myself and preferred to follow what the guidelines were, what people said, what was right. You have to go out into the world with open eyes and soak up everything that gets in your way: Posters, adverts, art, colours, type, people, music, smells, statements, ... But to listen to your inner voice to create yourself, don’t copy these people. When I get the chance to inspire people with a type poster, I want to take away the fear of doing something wrong and give them a way to do it easier. That's why these two Manifesto Statements have evolved: - If you open your mind, you can see better - create better. - Have the courage to be disliked. Be outstanding.

Packaging: Blogpost #9  - The “field trip” assignment

today was planned with the packaging course the field trip to coombs. Unfortunately the bus and its replacement bus were defective, so the trip was cancelled. Rebecca and I thought about getting inspired for a packaging series at the London Drugs. Already on the way I saw the Liquor-Store and there I came on the idea that with a 3-part series the product wine could offer itself nevertheless quite well. At the moment I am attending a management course in the wine industry at VIU, which means that my current knowledge could contribute to this. Of course it is always good to choose a product that passionates you. Well, Wine is something I really adore, not only because of the taste, so it should be the perfect product for my Project 2. Pinot Noir. The grape that is processed not only to red wine, but also to white wine or rosé. How does it work? The skin of the red grape is not used and the fermentation process in general is different, so that a completely different wine is produced with a different colour. This can be done with all grapes, but Pinot Noir is the best choice. It is also called "King of the Grapes". Because very special is: It can also be processed to a Sparkling Wine more exactly said a champagne. It occurred to me: Let me brand a wine. But not only 3-part but 4-part, even if the champagne does not belong to them completely. It’ll be the special one. The Queen. The Red is the King, the rosé the princess, the white the prince. It’s so logical in my mind, but I’ll see if it really works when I’m designing it. So the next Step is calling. I already have some ideas but I still have to add some sketches before I begin with the draft of the label. I've already gathered some inspiration from other packaging designs and come across a lot of ideas on how to design the label. However, it wouldn't be a real package design if I didn't design the whole packaging for the product. So I will design a kind of bag for the outer packaging afterwards following the designed label. But first things first: Start to Brand.

All tea bags fit into a much smaller packaging, because the single packaging of the tea is now used as much space as it really needs, everything is recyclable and the usual use of the tea bag hasn’t changed much, except that the introductions are now only on the general packaging. Everything else is superfluous in my eyes and theoretically not needed. So you can save a lot in printing and the product is much more sustainable. The idea to choose transparent windows so that you can look at the product was quickly over when trying out on the prototype. Why? There wouldn’t be a good advantage for the product and because bagless tea would have changed the conventional use too much and I would not have imitated the actual product but changed it. The packaging is now decorated with yellow coloured surfaces as rectangles and Icons for the ingredients. I like my final design because it still reminds me of the original and is still a step more sustainable and a lot more minimalistic. The design is still visible and it will still be perceived on the market because it’s stand out enough. When I worked on the project, I also noticed that President’s Choice tea products don’t really have a product name, neither the product itself nor the varieties. So I used a name that fits the ginger-lemon variety, but as well the product in general: “Bloom”. The message is therefore sent even better. With this tea you are warmed up, the natural ingredients cause a better immune system, you wake up, you blossom again. I think you should save some money on packaging design but not on a name.

I really enjoyed analyzing problems and changing them, even though you can’t make everything sustainable, the industry should think more and more and not just because something looks better. Minimalism is in vogue anyway, and not without reason.

The final of the inner packaging

My goal was to eliminate garbage from tea packaging. The best illustration is the 1st and 4th picture, where you can see how much garbage actually hangs from a few cups of tea. So I went further and changed the usual use and tied everything together. Of course, it would be really sustainable if only one strand holds the bags together, but from 20 labels only one becomes, from a whole bag only a third of the tea bag material is used. Now it only has to fit into the finished packaging, which I will pick up and assemble tomorrow.

First I took a closer look at the actual product and discovered that it takes up far too much space, even if the tea needs space to spread out when you prepare it.

As you can see on the picture, about 3/4 of the container is not really used. So you could roughly halve the size. So the tea still has air and still doesn't use so much material. The 2nd negative aspect is that there is a band with a label on each tea bag. Is this really necessary for the product to use or just to make it easy for people ?

About the design: Tea is beautiful, why is it never shown? Depending on the variety, you can discover the most beautiful flowers and fruits inside. Which brings me to my first thought: more transparency. In general, transparency is always a good idea for sustainability because you save material. The buyer also wants to buy more because "he knows what's inside".

Summary: I want to focus more on the product itself than on the many materials around it, because tea has the potential to do so.

If you are given the task of making packaging more sustainable, tea is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. As with the packaging I have chosen, the packaging is relatively recycled and the tea is still presented as you know it. Yet you should look again, because too much is packed, the space in the bag for example is already too much. Does Tea really needs to be packed in 3 different containers?

Typographic Capsule Library

I personalized my typographic library and have chosen the fonts that I like best and that I think are the easy to combine:

Serif All so equal and yet so different, I mostly use serif fonts for body texts at short distances, they must be clear and legible despite their serifs: All 3 are therefore well suited, the "Bodoni 72" is one of my favourite fonts, although you usually have to core it a little tighter because it has a wide width by nature. 

Sans Serif In addition to the Azo Sans lettering, which simply always and for every use fits, the "Champagne & Limousine has a totally personal touch" even rounder hallmarks than the Azo and therefore very feminine and noble. The Futura then rather for the more serious and classic case, yet stylish and precise.

Slab Serif At first I wasn't even sure what Slap Serif was anymore. Then I wondered if I would use it at all and in fact I use it very rarely, but there are these 3 I prefer. In my eyes relatively similar but strong in character. strong characters are harder to adapt, but if they are, they work exceptionally well.

Handwriting Handwriting typefaces are almost always part of my design taste. It always adds that certain something to anything straightforward. Especially, but rarely applicable: "Gloss Drop". It looks like written from a fountain pen, illustrated, but not too kitschy. Easier to mix for example with the Azo Sans, is the Gatreaux or Advertising script. Whereby one can again recognize the range of handwriting scripts. One in a neat handwriting, the next rather wild, like a signature, but I think both can be applied well.

Decorative & Display So a display font should be as conspicuous as possible, shouldn't it? Not quite right. Helvetica can probably be used anywhere, but designers still use the classic instead of the individual. Why? For many it is simply perfect and most precise - easy to read. A display font or decorative font can also resemble a handwriting like the "Victor Script" from my favourites. It's just a touch more unnatural than the "Reclame Script" but that's exactly what makes it so decorative for me.

Typography #3

you have the text and.. thats its. Make something about the typography - design it like you think it needed to be designed.

My personal goal was to make it beautiful but with less design. It has to be informative and not overloaded - but it also has to invite the reader to read. The result has already become relatively basic, but I have understood the task as such to change it as well as possible only with typographic means.

Packaging Design

Finally our packaging is done. It wasn't that easy like I think it could be, because keep in mind: One Print is not enough. Everything looks perfect on the screen, but it will be difficult to transmit it to the paper. The small imperfections will be visible when you print it out, and thats why I’m not satisfied why my project. But I’m looking forward to the next chapter: Make the packaging more sustainable. We watched a nice video about a more sustainable life, even I am trying to find the balance between “living your life to the fullest” and “be the most respectful to our environment - our planet earth”. Already have Ideas about my sustainable packaging.

Blog Entry #2 Looking, Thinking & Imitation Assignment C: Recreate a good typography. 
Ive chosen this piece of paper from a magazine. Several written mixtures that are well implemented, and I had to clone it. It was more tricky than I thought, because the typeruler told me something different than the scan I had inserted as the 2nd layer in the Indesign file. But I tried to find the balance, which I did relatively well in comparison. It was an exciting experience working with Typo like that. Of course, despite using the right fonts, I had to do a lot of kerning and line spacing as well.
