Thinking back to the 24 Hours in the Golden Apple Podcast, what I really liked from that was their incorporation of background noise. I plan on also using background noise from my locations, because it allows the listeners to feel like they are present and will help them to get invested in the podcast. Another strategy I hope to be able to do is inserting the interviews through the entire podcast and not one right after the other. The points made in each interview help to backup my claims and make my following statements more relevant. What I do hope to avoid is the dullness from the “Spirit of color” podcast, as a class we all agreed that it came off awkward and stiff. I hope that my podcast can be relaxed and entertaining, as well as informative. I also hope to have smooth transitions between topics and be able to fade the background noise

In “What we talk about when we talk about hoodies,” Wesley Morris makes compelling arguments for how America views hoodies and the impact the picture of the Miami Heat. I agree that it is a problem in today's society that a simple article of clothing can be trained into our brains as an image of danger. As Morris stated a hoodie can give off a “tough” persona, allowing those wearing  them to “lose themselves.” I think having a team as the Miami Heat taking this photo and being posted by Lebron James, a very popular figure, goes to show that this is a situation that needs to be taken seriously and can only be fixed by society as a whole reforming the way we perceive people and clothing. By implementing a dress code, is as if they are trying to cover up the problem, not fix it. The more public figures to speak up about this issue, the better the chances are of changes being made.

I got all positive feedback, I think overall, my topic is very easy to relate to because we are all college students and studying is a huge part of our academic life. It was suggested that I look into why certain majors are only allowed to use buildings, as I do find that connected to my topic, I do not know if I will actually be able to find that information. After giving my podcast pitch i was concerned I did not separate my ideas enough when explaining them and they all became mushed together. I definitely need to work on making sure they are all clear and their own in my podcast. The thing I am looking forward to the most would have to be the interviews themselves, because I think it will be interesting to see how other people study and where, also why they choose in that place and way.

 The potential target audience for my podcast is going to be students who care about their study spaces. Since I plan on going into details about what makes a study space special to students around UK, i believe the students who care the most about their grades and those thriving for 4.0 GPA’s are going to be the ones most passionate about my topic. Through seeing how different atmospheres effect the way they learn and study is going to be the basis of my podcast. Also, it will help others to maybe find a way they might want to try when it comes to finding the right study space for you. The audience for mine is going to have to be University of Kentucky students, but more specifically those who do not always find themselves studying at Willy T but maybe at The Pathway to Innovation, Starbucks, or even the lawn chairs around campus. There are so many different places one can study around here, and I believe there is a reason behind each person for why a certain location works best for them.

The scholarly article I found talked about how important that right study space is, pertaining to how well one will learn the subject at which they are studying.If the space itself is full of distractions and noise it is highly unlikely one will be able to learn or retain anything that they are looking at .  It was proven through experiments, that students who were placed in classrooms with desks in a U formation, and not all just facing the front of the room tended to score higher on the ACT. Students who feel more comfortable in their studying space allow their brains to hold more information in a study session than those who are in a traditional classroom environment. These tests alone proved that the environment plays a major role in how well students will learn or study. The more students understand their own needs and what works best for their own learning, the better teachers and professors can aid in their academic experience.

The space/ place i choose for my essay is the Pathway to Innovation. Its located within the engineering courtyard and acts as a gateway when entering from the Gatton side. I decided on this place, because I walk by it everyday and not once have I never seen people sitting, laying, or eating on the giant pillar type benches. It wasn't till i actually walked over to it did I realize it stood for something. Upon looking it up i soon found that, the pathway is an ongoing project, you can purchase a brick right now and have it laid, and the money goes towards student programs. If i were to interview people, I would ask them whether they actually know what the name of the structures are? I would also like to know why the architecture choose to build the structure to look like benches and whether it was his intentions to have them used as such. Also why University of Kentucky choose to place it in the engineering courtyard.

I believe my speech went better than I had hoped. I volunteered to go first because that's something I’ve always done and it makes me feel more confident. I was actually really glad I decided not to use note cards, it made the speech feel more genuine and allowed the conversation to flow. I tried my best to make eye contact and make sure I kept the class engaged. I need to work on talking a lot slower and trying to refrain from using words such as like and umm.  By doing that I will sound more clear and prepared. I also need to refrain from moving my hands a lot when I talk, it can be distracting to not only me but also the audience.

Post #2: Writing

Due to the advanced classes I took in high school, such as AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition, I had to do a lot of writing assignments.  I neither hate them or love them, it really depends on what the prompt is. Normally when I have a writing assignment, I start by doing a super rough outline, only writing the main points for both the thesis, topic sentences, and conclusion. From there I then basically word vomit, typing everything i have flowing through my mind till I have at least 4 pages of majority nonsense with a few lines of greatness. I then spend hours editing out the unneeded and then perfect what is left, whether its filling in gaps or clarifying what earlier statements are supposed to mean. I don’t know how I came across this system but it has always worked for me and I find it easiest. Now that I am in college, I know that my process will have to change slightly, outlines will be required to be a lot more formal, so a lot of my writing and rough draft making will have to be done outside of class.

In class today, we talked about how a space was supposed to be somewhere where we felt comfortable and safe, places such as our rooms or homes in general. I would consider UK a space to me, even though I am from Chicago and this is my first time being here, the environment in which the campus holds is so welcoming and home like that almost right away when I stepped on campus for a visit it became a space and not a place.  Through joining other organizations through the college such as a sorority, the campus has only become more of a space in which I feel at home. I am originally from Texas and had always wanted to get back to the south, I found that familiar feel while walking around Willy T and being surrounded by the endless rows or trees and welcoming smiles everywhere. Overall from the past few days I would say UK is filled with people who are there to support and help each student to reach their goals. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and excel at what they do, strengthening the schools spirit and connection from staff to students.
