Post # 2: Your Writing Process
What are your experiences with writing? Do you love it? Hate it?
Tell us a bit about your usual writing process. When you are given an essay assignment, what do you do first? How does everything usually turn out? What changes, if any, do you plan to make to this process as you begin your college career?

The area of Lexington is a much faster pace with people walking and driving everywhere then in my hometown. The buildings in Lexington are a lot nicer and closer together, which is nice for walking to class. I love the brick buildings and walkways on each side of campus because it gives each wing a little personality. I chose to come to UK simply to branch out and to become more independent with myself since this is the first time living on my own. UK is a great campus for you to feel at home and comfortable with. I love how small campus feels once you get comfortable and find out where everything is. In my hometown everything is very spread out, but in Lexington the brick buildings and open restaurants are very close and convenient for you to walk anywhere. The tall maps and signs on campus are really convenient for getting to know campus or wondering where you are. Since i grew up in Kentucky, UK has been my dream school since grade school. No one in my family has ever graduated from UK and I hope to be the first to say that I have! My first impressions as a student was very overwhelming since i came up a week early for rush, but was also very beneficial because I learned my surroundings a lot faster and met so many great people to help me prepare for the upcoming school year.

Hi, all! I am excited to be your WRD instructor this fall and know that we will have a great time and learn a lot together. As we begin, reflect on our class discussion of space and place, and relate it specifically to UK. What are your thoughts on space/place and community here? Why did you choose to come to UK? What does it mean to you as a space or place at this juncture? Do you have any history with UK? What are your first impressions as a student here?

Post #2: Your Writing Process
Through out high school I wrote a lot of book reports and research papers, and during those four years I wasn’t a big fan of all the writing I had do. It always felt time consuming, but I knew by doing these assignments it was improving both my vocabulary and my writing skills. When I am given an assignment I usually brainstorm everything i could write about in my paper to make it A+ material. After I brainstorm, I set up everything that I am going to talk about in each paragraph, from the introduction all the way into the conclusion. After I complete the whole paper I read over it one or two times and do a lot of editing during this process to make sure that I am completely satisfied with my paper. I have been pretty successful with this process during my high school career, but I know in college the papers are a lot more in depth. I will have to be more factual and to the point then dancing around the answer to make my paper longer. It will be a transition that I know I will be able to do and I will help me in the long run in my career.
Post #2: Writing
Due to the advanced classes I took in high school, such as AP Literature and Composition and AP Language and Composition, I had to do a lot of writing assignments. I neither hate them or love them, it really depends on what the prompt is. Normally when I have a writing assignment, I start by doing a super rough outline, only writing the main points for both the thesis, topic sentences, and conclusion. From there I then basically word vomit, typing everything i have flowing through my mind till I have at least 4 pages of majority nonsense with a few lines of greatness. I then spend hours editing out the unneeded and then perfect what is left, whether its filling in gaps or clarifying what earlier statements are supposed to mean. I don’t know how I came across this system but it has always worked for me and I find it easiest. Now that I am in college, I know that my process will have to change slightly, outlines will be required to be a lot more formal, so a lot of my writing and rough draft making will have to be done outside of class.

In class today, we talked about how a space was supposed to be somewhere where we felt comfortable and safe, places such as our rooms or homes in general. I would consider UK a space to me, even though I am from Chicago and this is my first time being here, the environment in which the campus holds is so welcoming and home like that almost right away when I stepped on campus for a visit it became a space and not a place. Through joining other organizations through the college such as a sorority, the campus has only become more of a space in which I feel at home. I am originally from Texas and had always wanted to get back to the south, I found that familiar feel while walking around Willy T and being surrounded by the endless rows or trees and welcoming smiles everywhere. Overall from the past few days I would say UK is filled with people who are there to support and help each student to reach their goals. Everyone is encouraged to get involved and excel at what they do, strengthening the schools spirit and connection from staff to students.
