A letter to my ex-best friend
I hate you, you don’t care, but I need to get this out somewhere. So here’s why
1. You’re an awful person. I told you about how our “friend” raped me and what do you do? Hook up with him, in your hot tub, completely sober a couple weeks later. AND YOU KNEW HE RAPED ME.
2. Every time we would go somewhere, you would have me drive. Then, when we’d get where we’re going, you wouldn’t pay for parking. Like, what? You have to do one or the other. Or at least volunteer to drive sometimes? Friendships are supposed to be a back and forth, give and take type thing but really all you did was take.
3. You combined my birthday and Christmas gifts, this one is kind of petty but it still got on my nerves because I know you expected a birthday gift and a Christmas gift, which I wanted to give you.
4. Not only did you combine my gifts, you gave me a shitty $3 necklace and a scarf last year... WHEN HAVE I EVER WORN SCARVES like what made you think I’d like that $7 scarf you never seen me wear them because the low is usually like 65 degrees where we live????!
5. We planned a Vegas getaway weekend for the end of one summer because we both had busy schedules and wanted to do something. But what do you do? You cancel a week before so you can go to fucking Newport with your roommates...you live with them? You couldn’t go ANY other weekend I was going back to the Bay Area where I wouldn’t see you again for a while? But that didn’t matter, you’re going to do what you want to do because that’s just how you are.
6. I took you to a lifeguard party with me—the first one I went to—and what do you do? Get so drunk you start puking so I have to beg a stranger to drive you to your house and put you to bed. What an incredible first impression. I never wanted to take you around them again. It’s like all you care about is getting hammered and as long as there’s someone there with you to do it everything is all good. And I know that’s true because I distinctly remember coming home from college one weekend and because I didn’t want to drink you said “You used to be so fun, you don’t want to have fun anymore!” — I don’t need to be hammered to have a good time? And I never thought that was fun?
7. You hijacked my 21st birthday by having my sister drive you, not paying for parking (I did, even though it was MY birthday), not paying for gas, not paying your portion of the bill so my friends chipped in so we’d be able to leave the restaurant, getting blacked out, trying to chug tequila and me having to babysit you and us ultimately leaving because you were just too drunk, and you spending the whole time trying to get a good snapchat or Instagram picture — so happy you could celebrate my 21st!!!!
8. When my grandpa died, you drunk texted me (and yes I know you were drunk because snapchat stories tell you about what time you post them) saying “Hey! Really sorry to hear about your grandpa, I hope you're doing okay!” LIKE OBVIOUSLY I’M NOT OKAY and I haven’t heard a word from you since. But you’ve got your #girlgang now so I’m just irrelevant at this point and that’s fine.
At this point I’ve unfollowed your snapchat because I don’t need your snaps always showing up in my story feed, but I don’t even think you’ve noticed since you never watched my stories or snapped me anyways and probably have like 6,397 other bffls.
So the only interaction I have with you now is when you like my Instagram posts and it honestly makes me so mad, do you just want my like too? We were “best friends” and now I’m just a loyal liker, is that what you want? Because I have no interest in that.
Not that you asked, but it still hurts every single day that my grandfather is gone. I broke down in the mall, just sobbing while looking at cards in the store because this year it wasn’t a “grandparents” card I was getting, it was just a “grandma” card. I bought my grandma a gift, not him. Usually they come over and we have Christmas dinner, we’ve been doing that for years, the year I don’t even want Christmas to happen, I wish we could just skip over this week, and all of the holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries for the next year for that matter.
