One night I was everyone's spirit animal #tbt
On Saturday, after a hectic two weeks of tearing down walls, cleaning and preparing we opened the Little Red Schoolhouse to the public with our first show.
Battlefield, by Ugo Schiavi are tests of strength, and he considers his studio akin to a battlefield. The struggle he engages in with the materials-concrete, steel, neon-always carries a symbolic force of fighting in it’s representation. This short one-month residency in Eden is an opportunity to further demonstrate specific physical tests within his art, by marrying the time exhalted forces of America. His report to the statuary is almost archaeological: highly detailed figurative sculptures speak to the classical tradition in their current time worn states. His work is capable of causing great confusion it’s readings: the immediate feeling of a crash between the ancient and the present.
We were surrounded by our new friends in Eden, our neighbors and our loved ones who came to support us. Grateful doesn’t even begin to express what we felt that night and what we are still feeling now. Community support has been one of the most beautiful parts of this process. Although it felt like a lot, all in all, the show is the first baby step of our project. Now, The Schoolhouse will be transformed into a studio space where we will be processing images used for the book. Said book and photos will be published and exhibited by Aperture in September 2016.
Saturday was such a stressful, but beautiful day.
Wednesday
Yesterday’s post will probably be the least image-heavy of the week. Most of our efforts yesterday were spent on creating social media outlets about the project. We’ve made an Instagram, Facebook, an enormous email list that a few days took days (because 80% of an artists career are his/her relationships) to accumulate.
Here’s a plug - it’d be great for everyone to follow us.
After having our eyes glued to our computers, we ventured into the house to do more cleaning for Saturday’s opening. Not long after we got there, it started pouring while the sun was still out. Down in the south, we call that the devil beating his wife. Other places call them sun showers. It made making our latex mold of the siding a little tough, but acquiring water for scrubbing the walls got much easier.
It’s only 10 am and I’ve already learned something new: how to make .gifs
The power of four people and a sledgehammer.
Tuesday
Our day began with mopping the floors, moving all broken wood and sweeping up the rest of the god-awful faux brick siding from the perimeter of the schoolhouse.
We got new windows installed! Pictured above: Sylvain documenting one of our awesome contractors about to install a window
Later in the day, Sylvain and Olivia gave a speech at Eden’s monthly city council meeting concerning the project’s community impact, intentions, goals and needs. It went very well and several important contacts for resources were made as a result.
Monday
Our visiting artist, Ugo Schiavi is having the his first exhibition in America this Saturday, in the Little Red Schoolhouse.
Battlefield is the name of his show.
For said show, Ugo made life-size molds of two local high-school football players, Will and Tyler Dabbs. Here are some behind-the-scenes pictures of some of the process.
Our first week in pictures.
pictures 1-3 / making plaster molds and latex molds.
pictures 4-5 / breaking down an apartment attached to the building and removing all the faux brick siding (60 bags of removed siding in total)
pictures 6-8 / sourcing items from an abandoned factory in town.
First week working for Aperture!
My first two days on the job for an Artist Commission between The Hermes Foundation and the Aperture Foundation.
Stay tuned.
After watching several hundred kids do it, I finally got to experience the rush of the zipline. Today was my last day shooting for Passages. I'm moving on to intern with the Aperture Foundation. But I love it all. Every single day. (at Passages Adventure Camp)
Up close for @dinosaurjr! (at The National)

The ephemera of home.
One of my favorite pictures of one of my most favorite people. Yesterday marked the end of our first trip around the sun together. Our next one begins on a note of transition, as we've been moving and will be heading on another adventure tomorrow. In stress and transition and new things and celebration, I'm so glad you're by my side.
The kids I shoot every week are much braver than I am. (at Passages Adventure Camp)

My assassin, like Casper the ghost There’s no shade in the shadow of the cross
My father's life has been an endless fascination over the last year or so. He has become my muse. Thank you for what time you gave me. I'm still learning so much about you and through that, I'm learning about myself.
Dreaming of my next adventure and missing Chicago.
