Evaluation
From last project (negotiated study), I wanted to explore how much further I could take the concept of creating worlds from visual material (Video and pictures). I wanted to gather a similar understanding of inspirational places people have been to. Rather than having people try to understand my own experiences, I wanted to take others and create immersive environments.
As I ended up gathering material from several people, In part, it was for them. If they could see an accurate representation of their pictures through my models, then Id meet the brief. Although with this being incorporated into the degree show, It needed to have a certain level of interaction with it.
What relevant theory, reading or research underpinned your approach to solving the problem?
Superstudio, and taking inspiration from a render (animation), Pictures from others. Reached out to others with A POSTER (SEEN IN DEVELOPMENTS). Christine and Jean Claude wrapping of buildings meant that they take on a sculptural appearance. The effect is similar to using the warp tool on SketchUp. Also by the use of VR after talking to Johnny Griffis, I tried to encapsulate realistic textures in its own space, using the reference photos as backgrounds, opposed to having the models set up in white space .
The better Ideas came when setting up degree show. I was able to visualize my board and continue where I left off through planning with iterative design. Initially, I was sketching out Ideas to translate to SketchUp, but it’s been proven quicker to develop through SketchUp, keeping the computer models live and making copies.
The first developments of my Ideas came from interviewing my friend Maria. This is where it became exciting to find out about why her trip was so inspiring. Id recorded the conversation and looked back, but I had a little too much material. This is when I decided to do an open call. Organising digifest was underway, so I had a few weeks to gather material from others. Having a limit of 15 images, It simplified my working process specific details of the places. After receiving the material, I was able to make computer models more efficiently, although with the information from Maria, I was able to produce 3 models (later combined int two). Overall, the development came with making the models. The more complex models, I reproduced in screen prints.
Which relevant practitioners did you study in order to validate your personal reasoning?
Lawrence Zeegan – research of character.
Superstudio, Patrick Thomas (uses of technology)
Beeple – used for visual reference
Musketon – The idea of outsourcing material came from his book – vector city.
I used Premiere Pro, SketchUp, key shot, photoshop. The most computer programmes I’ve used in a project yet. Meaning it’s the most I’ve used my computer on a project.
As a continuation of the last project, It was appropriate to continue in producing 3d printed models,
I bought a 3d printer, Invested time in learning how to realistically render computer models. That way, I was able to use the process to show the materials of each place realistically.
Why did you choose your particular production methods? Give reasons.
As I sought out to make my own 3d prints, at the consequence of it breaking and having to fix it myself. It means I can be entirely self-sufficient for producing 3d prints for new designers I wanted to include animations of the SketchUp models.
Screen prints seemed relevant, opposed to creating digital prints, as they require refinement, and produce more vibrant colours.
I produced what I’d intended to. With screen prints, animations, ad 3d models combined, Hopefully, I will have created a display for my audience to interact with. The SketchUp animations were successful in the sense of relating the rest of the work to each other. Textures of the computer render, SketchUp models and prints complement each other.
A big part if each brief, is understanding your audience. For D&AD,
After putting out an open call, there wasn’t much interest in the project. Not many people could tell what it was about, without me telling them about it. That said,
As key shot renders take so long to render, I haven’t produced enough renders. This will change by the time the final show comes around. I wish I would’ve been able to draw more. If I would’ve concentrated on this main project, rather than another 4 projects (Penguin, 1988, jewellery collab poster, digest, secret 7”) I have a tendency to help others more than helping myself. Something, Ill have to keep an eye on in the future.
I started a job halfway through the project. Understandably this puts a little stress on studies, which ended counteracting, being given a weeks notice, a week before the deadline.
How will you modify or change your approach in future?
I have More realistic animations to do, in key shot.
