So I've been wondering if there are fics where Phryne pretends to be Jack's wife (for fun or, idk, to get into his hospital room, whatever) behind his back and then he finds out and is like hm DARLING WIFE where have I been exactly when we were getting married? I’d love to add that my Coded Expressions also includes the fake married trope (but Jack doesn’t seem to mind at all). And when it comes to crackfic, you can’t go past Eternally Phryne and Jack, in which our detectives are in a fairy tale, pirates (that’s mine), noir, and many more - each chapter by a different author. So much fun stuff to read!

Where to start with MFMM?

MFMM Tumblr!  My auntie has listened to my blandishments and decided to give MFMM a try, possibly with a eye to buying the DVDs (she does not have Netflix or Acorn).  She would like to watch an episode with me first, though, since I do have Netflix.  What episode should I show her?  Should I start with Cocaine Blues or skip to something somewhere in the middle?   If something in the middle, which one?

@squintkes - that’s a great question and sadly so difficult to answer. I’m sure other people will weigh in as we all have favorite episodes for different reasons. IMO,and others are free to disagree, I wouldn’t start with cocaine blues. It’s not the strongest episode to me but it does set the stage effectively enough. I might try Ballarat or Green Mill, they’re still pretty early in the relationship and development of Phryne’s detecting skills that she won’t have missed much backstory plus it starts to showcase the incredible chemistry between Phryne and Jack. I probably wouldn’t start in season 3 because she would have missed so many of those Phrack moments that we all so love. I think any episode in season 1 is a good start but don’t do king memses or murder in the dark before blood and circuses. That trilogy is excellent. And definitely don’t show her Murder and the Maiden because just no on Compton. 😂 This is all just my opinion and there are so many others who can more eloquently give you their thoughts on a starting place. Hopefully she’ll love it as much as we do. ❤️

Can you recommend me some tooth-rottingly sweet and full-of-tropes fanfiction? In which bad things only happen very briefly if at all and a happy ending is guaranteed? And the writing isn’t terrible.

Tropes I’d die for:

- enemies to lovers

- fake dating etc.

- social media au/long distance

- accidentally married

- marriage/dating of convenience, green card married etc

- we have to kiss… for cover

- oh no there’s only one bed what do we do

- reality tv show au e.g. strictly come dancing, dating shows etc.

- basically any Hallmark movie plot

- I don’t care about smut. In fact, I’d prefer heart-warming and T/M rated over E rated constant boning

I’m just really tired, my brain is tired, I’m frustrated with some of my students, and I have a blocked, aching ear so I don’t really want to watch tv tonight.

I’m not even that fussy about pairings but I’ve tagged some I could be in the mood for.

Or actual romance novels that I can download onto my kindle app. That is okay too. I’d love a good trope filled romance novel but I don’t even know where to start looking to find a decent one.

Your blog is awesome, thank you for so many amazing recs! Any good recs for fics that deal with Blood at the Wheel? Maybe they stayed apart for longer, maybe that talk in the end had a different conclusion…

What a fantasic ask! We all do love this episode for how it breaks our hearts a little and the wonderful angst involved. It also inspired a lot of writers to write a lot of different fics.

If you are in the mood for a short read these fics gives you little snippets of the episode and its aftermath:

Evidence (2015) by @heavyheadedgal – Jack’s whiskey-fueled thoughts before Phryne barges into his office in Blood at the Wheel. More of an inner monologue than a missing scene. 1142 words of pure angst.

Loving You Too much Is Too Much (2016) by pearlcaddy – Deals with Jack’s thoughts in the end scene of the episode.

Simple Truths (2015) by beadedslipper – During their estrangement, Jack is shot. When Phryne rushes to the hospital, she finds she can’t go inside his room; suddenly Dot is the one paying the Inspector a visit.

Carpe Diem (2015) by @edeainfj /deedeeinfj -The shock at the car crash makes Jack bolder in his wishes with Phryne.

Undone (2016) by @rositalg – Jack’s thought during the episode and an alternative ending.

The Troubled Plumes of Midnight (2018) by @scruggzi – The belief that Phryne had died awakens memories for Jack from the war. 

Be My Slow Road to Ruin (2016) by @olderbynow – Set after The Blood of Juana the Mad, this fic puts the “there is only one bed” trope in a timeframe when Phryne’s and Jack’s partnership is still fraught from the earlier fallout.

With a Whisky in Hand (And Perhaps Some Divine Plan) (2015) by OzQueen – Mac seeks out Jack to talk over a whisky.

Someone we don’t fool (2017) by @missingmissfisher – Phryne is hired by an art and antiques dealer friend while being estranged from Jack after Blood at the Wheel. She goes undercover, only to surprisingly run into Mr and Mrs Archibald Jones. 

Devil in the Light (2013) by xfphile – A very intense case fic set during Phryne’s and Jack’s estrangement. Through a case, Phryne finds a slavery ring and she decides to take it on without backup from the police. When Dot calls them in Jack has to move very fast.

Random Fic of the Month 101

Have you noticed these in the library?

Each of these lovely pictures represents a category of fic and once a month, based on the author’s own tags, a different fic will be randomly linked to the buttons. The beauty of these is you never know what you may find. Here’s a glimpse at the fics that were featured in July.

Angst - having pain means once there was pleasure (2013) by tisziny. The moment he arrived to the scene he saw it. The car crashed into a tree, a figure in the driver’s seat covered by a sheet.

Case Fic - Devil in the Light (2013) by xfphile. Had an unsuspecting eavesdropper heard the conversation that took place between the Honourable Miss Phryne Fisher and the equally honourable Detective Inspector Jack Robinson, they would likely wonder if they had, by some misfortune, stumbled into a rather modernized Shakespearean play…

Fluff - The day they found Janey (2014) by Frienze. The day they found Janey’s tomb was one of the most harrowing days any of them had experienced. (Which admittedly is not a particularly fluffy start.)

Smut - and stealing my heart (2015) by @aljohnsonwrites. As he strode up the driveway, Jack could hear raised voices coming from the parlour, the sound wafting through the opened window. 

Non-Phrack - Lessons from Miss Fisher (2013) by ijemanja. Prudence is not a stubborn woman. Oh, to be sure, there are those who would describe her so, but Prudence would most certainly disagree with them.

Wild Card - A matter of infinite hope (2017) by @missingmissfisher. “Quick, he’s just stopped suddenly up ahead!” Miss Phryne Fisher, lady detective, pulled on her partner’s arm to slow his quick stride.

The Abbortsford Crocheting Project…

… has just been completed! Thank you for all your enthusiasm and support, it has been a real help! 

I crocheted instead of knitted, so the scarf is not exactly like in the show, but I’m still rather pleased with the result. I don’t have a Dot to knit a scarf for me, or a Jack to woo me with one with those eyes, so I just had to make my own! 

This is what it looks like:

The first and last stripe are red, like Jack’s scarf in the show, and in the end I stopped at 13 stripes, like Hugh’s and Bert’s, because I felt it was long enough. The exact counting of stripes from the show is @teaandbanjo‘s work, and it’s been so helpful.

I used a thin kind of yarn and a small hook, 3,5 mm. I aimed for approximately 20 cm per stripe, which in my estimation became 17 rows for every stripe. My pattern is one I’ve used before and knew I’d like, it’s very simple and basically shells. The breadth I decided on was 20 11 (! i wrote the wrong number first!) shells for every row. This is the pattern:

Curiously enough, Miss Fisher and yarn somehow seems to work for me (this is extremely curious for me since all my life I have been so bad at this kind of thing). My first ever attempt at fanfic came about because I had so much fun thinking about Phryne and the fiber arts together – that became “The Worrying Kind”. My second fic was written to the question How can I make Jack Robinson knit? and became “Two stray girls at Wardlow”. LOLOL

Anyway, this project is now over, and I want to thank you for all your lovely messages! Over and out.

Thanks for the ‘Ask’, and it’s another fandom favourite… for a gal who doesn’t do committment, Phryne sure walks down the aisle a lot! 

Lets start with undercover as a married couple, because sometimes it’s the only way to crack the case: Under a Summer Sky (2013) by abluestocking; Never expected (2017) by @missingmissfisher; Undercover at The Elvsworth Club (2014) by @wah-pah/S_Winter_Fitzgerald; The Fox and the Hound (2015) by RakishAngle (afterdinnerminx); Mr. and Mrs. Fisher (2015) by shirasade; and The Preston Affair (2015) by MistressSara. Whilst we’re talking about fanfiction.net you may want to have a look at the works by Seldarius and MissTempleton who have both written entire series where Jack and Phryne are married and solving crimes.

Slightly off topic, but hey, is there any material difference between undercover as a married couple and undercover as an engaged couple? The Nature of Indifference (2018) by @inzannatea and When did you know she was the one? (2018) by whopooh. (Do also try Someone we don’t fool (2017) by @missingmissfisher where there’s undercover and marriage but not of the Phrack variety.)

And how about a few fics where Jack and Phryne get married… or do they?: Bridal Waltz (2018) by @scruggzi, people will say we’re in love (2017) by reindeerjumper; Play On (2017) by RubyCaspar; and The Scoop (2016) by pulpriter. Also The Anniversary Waltz (2014) by talesmith, (spoiler alert - they probably are married in this one.)

All’s fair in love and football, Miss Fisher...

… and I simply love that scene and that scarf! I’ve been having so many thoughts about making it, and after much stalling, here is my: 

Abbortsford crochet project.

I’ve seen such lovely knitted versions of the scarf by @fangirlshandbag and @teaandbanjo, but alas, I can’t knit, only crochet (and also not particularly well). Still, one has to work with what one can. It won’t look the same as Jack’s scarf, but with a dear friend gifting me kind of the perfect colours, and @teaandbanjo having tried out some of the measurements – how could I not try?

So, today I decided! I will try to do this, and this is the start of the project. Wish me luck!

Library facts about Miss Fisher’s fanfic (II)

This is installment 2 of 3 in the “Library facts” series. Post number one in the series can be found here. All numbers are from June 19th 2018. 

Challenges and collections

There have been three ficathons (fandom specific fic gift exchange) and within the latest ficathon, Phryne ficathon 3, there were 45 fics posted. 

Since the two first ficathons were deleted, the resposted fics have been collected in another special collection instead, “Found Family for Ficathon Orphans”. The fics lost all their original kudoses and comments when deleted, so don’t be shy to go there and give them some love!

MFMM used to also feature on Yuletide (a multi-fandom fic exchange) before the fandom turned too large to qualify.

2017 was proclaimed the “MFMM Year of Tropes” – with a challenge to write for a specific trope every month (soulmate, bottle episode, role reversal, marriage, etc.). Several writers covered all the months, and in total there were at least 235 fics posted. Here is the collection (the subcollections can be reached to the left in the link), and here are the monthly overviews of the fics written by @whopooh.

2018 is proclaimed “MFMM Year of Quotes”. So far, 92 fics have been added to the collection. 

Lately also a couple of flashfic challenges have been issued, and there is a regular feature of PFF (Phrack Fucking Friday), where writers post a smut fic the first Friday in the month.

All challenges are reblogged (or created) by @missfisherchallenges, so check in there.

 Smut, pairings and characters

Speaking of fucking, out of the 2051 fics on AO3, 445 are tagged as Mature and 261 as Explicit.

Only AO3 allows explicit fics to be published, not ff.net.

Miss Fisher’s Murder mysteries is unusually singular in its pairings for a fandom – Phryne/Jack is the pairing of a large majority of the fics.

“Phryne Fisher/Jack Robinson” (i.e. romantic relationship) is in 1588 of the fics on AO3.*

“Phryne Fisher & Jack Robinson” (i.e. friendship or partnership) is in 184 fics.

The fics are also – this is of course connected – fairly heterosexual in their inclination. There is more femslash than male slash. From the categories the writer has chosen, we find these relationships: F/M (1683); Gen (349); F/F (132); M/M (41); Multi (37); Other (16).

The tags of the fics say that Phryne Fisher is a character in 1744 of the stories, and Jack Robinson in 1640.

The highest numbers after them are Dorothy “Dot” Williams (403); Elizabeth MacMillan (362); Hugh Collins (342).

* Please note: All the facts under this headline except the overall number of fics are reached via AO3′s search function. Since we’ve found some discrepancies in the database, we can’t swear they’re exactly right, but they give a broad picture.

Chapter Two of Twenty One

The Policeman

The policeman sat down heavily on a stool at the bar, placed his elbows on the counter and buried his head in his hands. Dramatically.

The bar sat on the very edge of Eastern Beach facing out to the Alboran Sea. In the summer months it would be packed with wealthy English holidaymakers enjoying the only beach in Gibraltar not subject to the shade of the Rock, but that was still a couple of months away, and this late in the evening it was empty except for the ever present barman.

The man approached the policeman and enquired, “Bad day?”

“The worst,” mumbled the officer as he slowly raised his head. “Today, I learned I am to have a partner.”

“Ah.” In a white shirt, open at the throat with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, the man behind the counter made sympathetic noises as he picked up a spotless glass and started to polish it.

“It is a woman.”

“Oh?” Blue eyes widened with interest.

The policeman shook his head. “No, no, she is not the sort of woman you would be interested in.”

The barman shrugged. The sparkling glass was placed on the counter and then another beside it. “So, you going to tell me how the investigation is progressing?”

“Of course, this is why I am here.”

The barman picked up the bottle that he kept aside just for them and poured amber liquid into the glass. “And here I was, thinking it was because you find my smile irresistible.” He pushed the glass across the counter.

The policeman took his whiskey. “No,” he raised the glass in slow languorous salute, “it is definitely your cheekbones I come to stare at.”

3.  The Gibraltar Police Force was established in 1830 making it, outside the United Kingdom, the oldest police force in the world. It was established nine months after Sir Robert Peel set up the Metropolitan Police Force, he sent one of his lads out to Gibraltar to organise it.
