☪ — Seven hells! I’ve reached 400 followers and to me that is absolutely crazy! I know I’m a bit of a hermit but the friends I’ve made, the talented people I’ve followed and the character interactions have been nothing short of amazing. I adore Sandor, writing him has been so much fun and I’m glad you’ve all been along for the ride. Requests for JRR Tolkien (Part 2)

(Similar to this more general post I wrote a couple months ago.) This question is completely unfair because I want all the books from Tolkien, okay? But if I only get one, this is what I’d want:

War of the Elves and Sauron:

Setting: The mid-Second Age, mostly in Eriador (west of the Misty Mountains.)

Context: After creating the One Ring, Sauron attacks the elves of Eregion, who are allied with the elves of Lindon, the men of Numenor, and the dwarves of Moria. These groups then battle Sauron for control of Middle Earth.

Main Characters: Mostly elves. There are some great elves in this story (including Celebrimbor, Galadriel, Celeborn, Celebrian, Gil-galad, Glorfindel, Cirdan, and Elrond). Though if you’d like some more diversity, there’s also Durin III (king of Moria), and a few men (such as Tar-Minastir, king of Numenor, and his son Ciryatan) involved as well.

Story A: In Eregion, Celebrimbor realizes that “Annatar” is actually Sauron, and that he’s created the One Ring to control the other rings of power. Celebrimbor is soon killed by Sauron, and the realm of Eregion destroyed. During this time, Galadriel and her daughter Celebrian lead many refugees east through Moria to safety in Lorien. Meanwhile, Celeborn remains in Eregion to help lead the defense against Sauron.

Story B: Meanwhile, Gil-galad sends Elrond to Eregion with reinforcements. Given the fact that Tolkien says that recently-arrived Glorfindel “played a notable and heroic part in the war”, he doesn’t give any details, so let’s say that he’s with Elrond. Elrond and Celeborn join forces, but are losing pretty badly. The dwarves of Moria attack briefly, giving the elves a chance to retreat, and they’re chased into the valley of Imladris, where they’re held under siege while the rest of Sauron’s army fights Gil-galad and the rest of the elves of Lindon (hmm. maybe that’s where Glorfindel is? Either one’s good with me.)

And A Little Romance: After the war is over, Galadriel and Celebrian travel to Rivendell to find Celeborn. While they’re there, the elvish leaders hold the first White Council and discuss how to deal with Sauron in the future. Also while there, Celebrian and Elrond meet for the first time, and fall in love (though they don’t marry for several more centuries.)

I know that all of this was already written by Tolkien, spread out over a few different sources, but I would absolutely love to have it written in true narrative format (instead of essays, timelines, and footnotes.) Also, since he mostly just outlined the main points of the war, there’s a lot of room for “original” stories and development of characters that we don’t really see anywhere else.

Gandalf was greeted with a respectful, if curt, bow of his head by Thranduil, who quickly turned to scrutinizing the wizard with piercing eyes. As far as he could tell, Gandalf looked the same as ever, but he had expected little else. “Mithrandir. Although your visit is unexpected, I have little reason to turn you away.” Though that was true enough, the words themselves carried a subtle warning. For he had become reclusive, and he had turned away unexpected visitors in the near past.

"Now," he began tersely as he stood from his throne and made his way smoothly down the steps leading down from it to the platform before it. "I must ask what has prompted you to grace these halls with your presence. Not the wine and merriment, I suspect.” Sarcasm laced that one word: ‘Merriment.’ Oh, of course, if there was anybody who could enjoy festivities here, it was his elves, but things were a far cry from what they had been before the Necromancer’s taint spread throughout the forest, even with the Necromancer himself not present.

"No news too unfortunate, I hope?" Of everything he had spoken thus far, that question was easily the most earnest of all, for regardless of any bitterness he might have, he would certainly never wish to hear more bad news for his realm.

A breath was taken, thus causing the wizard's stature to quickly shift from a figure who was hunched over, to that of a young man in his prime. Standing tall, yet clutching the gnarled staff still, Gandalf met the steely gaze of the woodland king without a flinch of fear striking him. The words spoken from him were carefully chosen; Thranduil was inquisitive yet guarded, Gandalf could sense such. "I come not for drink or to dine, though such is rather appealing --if I must say," the wizened one continued with the light banter, trying to appeal to the King, but such lightheartedness would only go so far.

"I come asking for your help with a task I have taken upon myself to take care of," now it was time to see how cooperative the King would be to those who served in the White Council. With hat against the weathered robes worn and the trailing beard of ash that hung over his garments, Gandalf continued. "There is a ranger that has helped me track down a creature, one with knowledge about the one tool that could bring darkness to all the realms, even your own."

Gollum, the creature who has eluded them for many days, has finally been captured, though it appeared that not only Aragorn and Gandalf were on the hunt for him --but his presence was not ignored by the orcs. They needed a place to hide that was easy to venture through without the constant need of vigilance, they both agreed Mirkwood would be the appropriate place --but having Thranduil agree to such was a task best left to the wizard.

Strong were the members of his company –– wizard, archer, ranger –– even the wills of his young cousins were harder than his own; he, who was already feeling the gnawing bite of the Ring, hearing its dark voice call each day louder and louder… How long would it be before he succumbed completely? Blue eyes upturned to meet Gandalf’s at his touch, and the Ring-bearer forced sore lips into a smile.

In the sweet days of the Shire he had been a welcome guest, an old friend, even –– but now in the wild-lands beyond Imladris, no time could be spared for cozy tales of dragons or gold, nor a shared pipe beside the fire. Frodo had long cast aside the naïve gossip of Hobbiton; for in weeks past he had come to realize the true greatness of the Maiar’s power and knowledge, his wiseness far surpassing the likes of firework technology.

Yet still he remained as kind and unthreatening as he always had, leastways outwardly, and the hobbit took what little solace he could in Gandalf’s words. “I am glad for our company, otherwise I think would have been led astray already! Though,” he said, the smile fading from his lips as he drew shivering hands behind his cloak, “I cannot help but have my doubts, most of them regarding my own strength. Hardy you name me, Gandalf, but the Ring calls me yet.” A small silence followed an intense flash of the eyes, helplessness painting itself across the Ring-bearer’s visage as his voice dropped to a whisper. “I am afraid."

What hope did this company have to succeed at the task given to them? To lead Frodo to the very chasm of flames to rid the world of the very tool of destruction? It was a fool's hope, he knew such, but it was something they held on to firmly, for the fate of all burdened and weighed 'pon their shoulders. But, none so heavier than what Frodo carried. It was obvious already, painted on the young one's canvas, where a smile was drawn, but did not linger long.

The dangerous days before them were not yet charted, but strife and despair could not settle in their hearts, for already they would be defeated. Gandalf lit the torch of hope and would become the beacon for them, guide them, but how would the light reach Frodo if his heart would be consumed already by the doubt he speaks of? Never would he have imagined that hobbits would be the ones to change history, yet here he was, with another generation. He wished to protect, to keep them safe, but most of all, give them a future to look forward to. All he the wizard could do now, was place his faith in the one who looked up at him.

Gandalf was not sheltered from the bitterness of the wind, but he could see how Frodo struggled to keep some semblance of warmth. With a languid gesture, after warming up his fingers some, the silver scarf around his neck was unraveled and placed gently on Frodo, adding another layer of warmth, if such was possible.

"We are all afraid, do not think that I do not know how such feels like --if I recall. . was your uncle that gave me courage when we set out on our adventure many years back. Now it is you, a voice that spoke up in the Council, the young hobbit that decided to carry this terrible burden, who has proven to me how capable you are. Though you yet not see it for yourself, we all acknowledge it. Let not the shadows of doubt ensnare your heart, especially one cast by the Ring."

It had been two years already—— —two years since he took the ring to Mordor, two years since the world as he knew shattered as he watched. Two years since his dreams of adventures were taken from him, silently and surely. Two years.

And still he tried to move on, or to move back. To return to the point in which he once stood; return to his life as it once was. He tried to keep his routine—to read, to drink, to eat. It was hard, however.

Hard, yes, because when he closed his eyes he felt the weight of a chain around his neck, heard the soft whispers of the ring on his brain. Whenever he fell asleep he saw the Eye. And, at times… at times he even missed the One Ring.

But there were little things—- tiny, tiny things that made him clung to reality, clung to his life, to what was there, with him. Made him forget, ignore, let go of the weight on his neck, pulling down and down and down. Little things—, like the way the sun would shine, or how flowers would blow. The taste of ale, too.

A visit of an old friend was, most certainly, on such a list of little things. Which is why, as he opened the door, he smiled, widely. Hold on to the little things, Frodo Baggins.

“Gandalf!”

Nothing could ever truly be the same for the bearers of the ring, not for Bilbo nor Frodo. For the young hobbit, there were wounds that would not heal so quickly from their adventure and the time that he dreaded power was in his possession. Gandalf could not alleviate what he endured, but could only offer comfort in companionship whenever he came through to pay all the hobbits a visit.

Today he happened to return with robes flourished in gossamer, billowing behind his very vigorous steps. His eyes were gentle still, peering past bristling brows that sought out the young children that rushed to him, perhaps expecting one of his many displays of fireworks that he became famed for. Their attention, however, was not long lived at the fact that this particular wizard lacked the creaking cart full of rockets that whistled and lit up the heavens..

For the white stallion certainly caught their eye.

Shadowfax came with Gandalf by his own free will, and lead him from Tom Bombadil's to the very door of one Frodo Baggins. It was there, after a knock or two, that he was greeted with the warm sound of his voice which caused the wizard to drop down to the level of the hobbit and open his arms for an embrace!

"Frodo, Frodo! It warms the heart to see a smile upon your face!"

♕ –⊱ The waves licked the shore as the tide went in and out. The beautiful sea soothed the Queen, when confronted with its massive beauty the child of night felt small. Humbled by its presence a small smile formed along her face.

The sea will one day call his name and welcome him back home, but it was not this day. For now, he would watch on as the foam crashed upon the shores of a land he has come to love so dearly. His thoughts are of Valinor, or what little he could remember of it. It draws a smile to grace his weathered visage, until curiosity paints a perplexed expression when his attention lands on the young lady who too enjoyed the sea.

Not wishing to pry, and pull her from any thoughts she may have, Gandalf offers a light nod to the lass followed by a gentle smile before grey habiliments flutter about with the wind --and the turn of his heel as he heads further inland.

[ — Mithrandir had never led her astray, nor did she ever believe he would. The time he had spent in the world ahead had granted him further knowledge and wisdom, and Arwen idolized him, for she wished someday to bear the same depth and charisma that he did.

She accepted his gesture, the warm smile still remaining on her soft face, which had thus retained what little natural color it possessed. ]

"My adventures!"

Gandalf laughed as soon as the words tumbled from his lips. A hand worked its way down the length of his beard in a thoughtful gesture whilst blue hues sought to look up toward the heavens. "There are far too many to recount, some far too dangerous and others perhaps so dull it would send you to dream quickly."

The elder's eyes glittered like starlight whilst he reminisced on his earlier years and the time where he met the Dunedain who captivated the heart of the one maiden standing before him. There is a bright smile once his gaze fell upon her porcelain countenance and the silence withers away with a lighthearted chuckle, "Then perhaps during dinner I shall share some tales, as long as it doesn't stir the desire for you to rush off in the blanket of darkness to seek adventure."
