Have I been docile? Doe-eyed and passive in the harm being inflicted on a people? Patient and compliant while tread upon for the elevation of all but us? Calloused, uncaring hearts expect floor mats of our melanin. They anticipate apologies for not paving the path to their aspirations.

Should I cease to be sweet? Begin to bitter to their taste? I’ll preserve my treasure for the selfless lovers in latitude and repulse those who meet the mild-mannered love and patience of broken people with ungrateful expectation. I can no longer stand to be meek, humble, and kind as other young brothers and sisters maintaining this silence are tread upon. I am sick of the girl being pretty once her glasses come off. I’m sick of the boy suddenly staring at her because she’s taken her hair out of a bun. I’m sick of that dances that she said she didn’t want to attend suddenly being the place where she shows up and learns to live.    I want a movie where she gets kissed because her lab goggles left circles around her eye sockets. Where she doesn’t go to the dance and isn’t ashamed of it. Where she wins the science fair and the way the blue ribbon looks on her makes somebody’s knees weak.   I want a movie where the girl doesn’t get tamed. Where she’s still a badass bitch at the end of it. Where she doesn’t need a man because she has a killer girlfriend who is a cute nerdy radio technician. Where her freckles don’t get concealed on the big night. Where she shows up to prom in a suit and a model on her arm.   I want a movie where the queen bee is also a 4.0 student. Where she wears makeup and styles her hair and gets her work done. Where the pretty girl is also pure of heart, works on the weekends at soup kitchens, shows up with heels on. Where the queen bee lets the new girl have the boy because she doesn’t see the point in trying to compete. Where they end up friends at the end and the boy ends up with nothing.    I want a movie where girls are art without having to be painted over. Where we are beautiful without reason, where we don’t need to prove ourselves as being worth a boy’s affections. I want a movie where we don’t have to be secretly fuckable in order to get a happy ending.

To all my followers who don’t follow tennis and are wondering why this is important, Serena and Venus were unfairly treated at Indian Wells. The last time Serena played at this venue was in the 2001 final. She won, but she was booed throughout and racist slurs were thrown at both her and her family because Venus pulled out of their semifinal match. Venus and Serena boycotted the tournament since then. 14 years later, Serena decided to return. She was rightfully apprehensive and unsure what the crowd would be like, but she was welcomed on the court for her first match with a standing ovation. That’s why both she and her family are in tears.

Hard work & Humility

I realize how harmful it is to be socialized not to take up space. All those who can be comfortable taking what they need without a thought of their impact stand to live so much more of life than I believe I currently do.

Sometimes recognition and adulation only come when you make noise, regardless of how high your input or output might be in comparison to your peers.

Young women of culture/color, how can we--those socialized to serve our families, our communities, and anyone in need--begin to serve ourselves?

Humble mouths seem to go hungry.

I’m up too early and out too late

But one day I’ll look back and value accomplishments because I forget the nitty gritty. The long nights, the tears, the weak tea and broken mugs because I’ll have had the grace of time to smooth over the roughness of memory.

Time to return to productivity

Because if I tarry too long, I’ll tell myself its okay to slow to a stop and I’ll be stuck. Gotta be about this #StudyGrind.
