A Very Wray Wedding (Or, How My Family Threw Me at the Cutest of the Groomsmen)
My “other” cousin Jessica got married yesterday, and my dad and I were lucky enough to be able to afford the plane ticket to come see it. The wedding was simple, and lovely; I’ve never seen my cousin so much in love. She married into an instant family: her husband has a little boy from a previous marriage that is just the cutest thing in the world, and he adores my cousin. Watching Jessica with her new husband and little boy, it made me realize that I’ve been doing this whole “love” thing wrong. It really shouldn’t be so horribly complicated. When you find the person that you’re supposed to be with, it’s easy. It makes sense. It’s not supposed to be an every day battle. There ARE inevitably going to be hard times, but the hard times aren’t supposed to dominate the relationship. I’ve been beating my brains out lately trying to figure out how to make something work that is just not supposed to work. I see that now. I want to find something like Jessica found–simple, and unassuming.
Anyway.
When we got to the reception, we quickly realized that it was a dry reception. If you know my family at all, you know how odd that is. However. It was the best dry reception–scratch that–the best reception I’ve ever been to. Dad and I were at the “brothers” table…meaning our table had the most laughs. Well….the most dirty jokes. After the food and toasts (which, by the way, if you ever have to give a toast, WRITE IT DOWN. Don’t be that awkward person struggling to find words) my cousin and Aunt Janice pulled all of the young things onto the dance floor. You can’t say no to the bride or the mother-of-the-bride no matter how much you don’t want to be the only one on the dance floor. So we danced, and my Aunt almost trampled a baby. (Yikes.)
So right after my Aunt pulls me to the dance floor, she winks at me and goes off to pull one of the groomsmen onto the dance floor. This particular groomsman happened to be tall, handsome, and available. So naturally it was my Aunt’s mission to set us up. (She had been trying since the rehearsal dinner.) Don’t get me wrong, this guy was HANDSOME. Like. Jaw on the floor. Except. I’m awkward. And sometimes I’m SUPER awkward. And god forbid I make myself look like a super awkward loser when this handsome man is supposed to see my graceful, charming side. Grace and charm didn’t happen. But I guess he still wanted to dance with me anyway, considering what happened later. (How that happened….I will never know.) So the DJ called him over, and they talked for a minute, and then the DJ announced “Well it’s time for us to play a little two-stepping music. Can anyone do the two-step with this handsome guy?” Handsome himself looks over at me. And I turn into the biggest chicken in the world. Nope. No I can’t two step. That sounds hard. I’m awkward. I’ll fall over. I’ll say something awkward. I’ll step on him. So another girl stepped up. And they danced. And I felt stupid. And my Aunt and my dad called me stupid. At this point, my grandma decided it was time to leave, so she told me to get my coat. A little dejected, I put my coat on, and watch the end of the dance. After the song ended, Zac Brown Band’s “Chicken Fried” started playing, to which I literally shout, “I love this song!” Handsome walks over and sort of looks at me like, “Can we dance now?” and my dad proceeds to call me stupid, take my coat and purse, and shove me at him. I tripped a little on my Barbie heels from the shove.
We danced. I had a hell of time trying to get my mouth to say normal things. He spun me around and smiled when I tripped. He dipped me so low I squealed. And then he asked me to dance again, but my grandma was waiting impatiently to leave. I had to go. It was sad. He was cute and I wanted that second dance. *le sigh* Weddings.
Jessica is married, and I’m happy for her. And now I’m ready to move on from the silly boys making my life complicated and ridiculous. Here’s to hoping I see Handsome again. He’s a good dancer.
Update: I married him.
*This reblog is mostly so I can find the post to show Sam later without having to travel back in blog-time by 9 years*
