Watched my BabyGirl up on that screen today. Felt like I was right back in that very moment, the excitement of seeing her face and accepting that award swiftly bringing me to tears.
I’ve watched those clips a million times before, but something about seeing it today really hit different. It felt different. And the loss of this beautiful, humble, witty, talented and gracious young woman sunk in and the void felt bigger than ever before.
I miss her. I miss everything about her.
Today made her passing feel so raw and vivid in my mind, like it only happened yesterday. Some days are like that. Hard to grasp the fact that she’s no longer physically here, hard to deal with the insurmountable loss. On days like today, I retreat and keep to myself. I put on her music and sing along loudly, getting lost in her melodies in hopes that it dulls the ache in my soul. It does, but only for a brief moment.
As I watched Aaliyah up on that stage, smiling, laughing, thanking her peers and telling her brother that he was her everything, I felt for that brief moment that she was still here. Almost as if the last 20 years had been nothing but a bad dream and we were all finally awake. She was alive, she was here. She was doing what she was supposed to be doing. And that’s when I realised, she always will be. She IS here, she IS alive. In our hearts. In our minds. And she’s doing EXACTLY what she’s supposed to be doing. Keeping her legacy and spirit alive in us all ♥️
