Creating Generative Value
Wanderlust
Wanderlust.
It was only after traveling to Europe earlier this year that I developed a highly contagious disease, the ‘travel bug’. Also known as wanderlust. “A strong desire to travel”, (Lexico, 2019). I set off on my 6-week journey not knowing what to expect. 25kgs in a suitcase (and that was still increasing). After having decided to make this maiden voyage only a few months earlier I did not really think about what I was about to embark on. A life changing experience, what I did not know was that it was going to be the start of a lifelong illness. A battle.
I started this journey not even know where we would be visiting, I had not even looked at the itinerary. I was happy to go where ever, and do whatever. When I found out we were going to Germany, Austria and Switzerland I was not particularly keen. I had not even thought about these places before. But it is when you least expect it you find something really amazing. I think because I did not have high expectations of these places or no prior thoughts about them that made it so phenomenal.
I soon realized that I did not need all 25kgs of luggage or the 4 pairs of shoes. It became less about materialistic possessions or buying ‘things’ and more about experiences. Yes, this trip included what seems like a never ending amount of photos. But looking back now it is the memories and small things such as the views from the bus window or the locals on the street that have really stuck with me. Each of the 13+ countries I visited have helped shaped my views and the way I see the world today.
In this blog I will be outlining the particular destinations, must do activities and all things travel. From the people you meet and how even the small situations can impact your life.
As soon as I got back home to my mundane life in Perth, I started looking for my next destination. There has been a hole has been left in me and this need to explore more. To this day I have not found a cure for this fatal illness. I do not know if I will ever be the same again. But in some way I hope recounting the events that occurred will help me fill the void.
Same Split, different day and a boat destined for nothing.
Personal Opinion Piece #1:
Crystal clear blue ocean all around us, a few Croatian islands, 20 Aussies, 1 boat, a week full of fun and the rest is history. Well, that is how it was supposed to be. We rocked up to the port in Split early one Friday morning, ready to have the week of our lives. The first hurdle was carrying our suitcases across 7 other boats before reaching ours, Maja. Looking back, I now know that this is potentially the first sign of danger. We settled into our rooms, which were possibly worse than prison cells and then the boat was off.
For approximately 30 minutes it was bliss and positive vibes, then the boat came to a halt. One by one the other boats who we were supposed to be travelling alongside overtook us. That’s alright, they are just checking everything is okay with the engine, no need to stress. Just enjoy the scenery and sun and we will be off in no time we were told. Our boat had been stationary for some time, then we were approached by another boat, who proceeded to hook us up and then pull us back to Split.
Makarska, our first destination. Was quickly moved into the group of ‘islands we didn’t visit due to unforeseen circumstances’. After being stuck in Split port for nearly 48hours we disembarked Maja and moved to another boat. Engine failure was to blame.
We arrived at Korcula midnight the next day, playing catch up to the other boats. Although there were no spots for the boat to dock. All 20 of us hoped off the boat first our first proper night on the town, while the boat went and docked 1.5 hours walk away. Now that’s another story... Dubrovnik was next. Game of Thrones tour and a few hours to explore the town. Sums it up quite nicely.
Fast forward a few days, a storm blows in. The only thing we can do is retreat to the shelter of Trstenik. A location we weren’t even meant to visit. This was our home for the last 3 nights. Keep in mind according to the census of 2011, the town has a population of 116 people (Wikipedia, 2017). 2 restaurants, 1 tiny convenience store and a whole lot of nothing. Which basically summed up the whole week.
The positivity of the group made the experience well worth all the trouble the boat went through. There is still so much of Croatia I have not seen so it is defiantly still on the list of places to visit.
