Do Something That Matters
Quick runners take more steps
A slower runner may take 130 steps in a minute. A quicker runner takes 180 or more. To run quicker, take more shorter steps.
Try It
On a treadmill, count the steps taken in a minute. It is easier to count one side and double it. Compare your speed with big steps and smaller frequent steps.
Tips
Try to land on the balls of your feet, rather than your heel. Practice, it takes a while for your body to re-learn a movement and to feel natural. Aim for 180 steps per minute or more. Michael Johnson set world records at around 300 steps per minute. Watch his running style (the race starts at 1 minute).
Lose heat and burn fat
Your body temperature ranges between 37 and 39 degrees celsius. A primary use of calories everyday is keeping warm or cooling down. Through helping your body to lose heat, more calories are used to keep your body between 37 and 39 degree celsius. It is like running a house's heating, the thermostat set at 37C and leaving the windows open to let the heat out.
