I want to have known you when we were small stupid kids, have held hands together as we played outside. I want to have stressed out over exams together, nudging a mug of still steaming hot chocolate against your elbow to get you to focus. I want to have told you I love you before I did anyone else. I want to have held you in my arms when all those sad memories you describe to me were still fresh wounds. I want my past to have been full of you, and full of meaningful memories with you. I want my past lives to have been spent with you, whether as two lovers, or two housecats cuddling by the fireplace on a snowy day, or two flowers that just happened to bloom on the same day, next to each other. I want to have consumed your existence and intertwined it with my own since my birth, never to be separated from you for a moment. I want to have loved you throughout it all, for all time.

It's utterly magnetic when a character's rage is quiet and precise. When they don't scream and throw things but they just b r e a t h e and very very calmly aim their fury like an arrow shooting inexorably towards the target of their wrath. It captures my attention, I lean in close, I wait for the hit. It never disappoints.

With the heavy themes in the books and how much everybody loathes Laurent's wit and sharp tongue it's easy to forget that Damen and Laurent both enjoy bantering and annoying each other and are very good at it, too. It's one of the earliest aspects of their romantic relationship.

I did a full re-read of the Captive Prince trilogy and something that stood out to me is how much Pacat respects their audience’s intelligence. Things are not pointlessly repeated. The dialogue is not convoluted and the characters do not drift away from their characterisation for the sake of simplicity and shock. The audience is expected to keep up with the plot and not be served the facts on a platter. Things that escape the main POV character’s notice can be revealed to the reader, as long as they are paying attention. Our own understanding of the line of events is not strictly tied to that of Damen’s.

The love and labour put into the pages is apparent in every sentence. The book requires your full attention, and that’s its power.
