I keep thinking about Damen not realising Laurent's trauma until the very end because in his mind family is a safe space. Family can't harm you. Family is trust and companionship, family has your back and you have theirs.

Despite what Damen himself went through with his brother, until the very end he still can't contemplate damaging the people closest to you.

And the irony or the beauty is that this fierce, protective belief makes him the safest partner for Laurent. Damen is like Auguste, he's always going to take care of Laurent, protecting and supporting him.

That's why Laurent doesn't wear tight clothes any longer by the end and even more in the short story, he's free and loved and safe.

best fucking shit in all captive prince trilogy me thinks is when damen saves laurent in a court with his very own critical thinking skills while laurent saves damen from his brother with his own strenght and fighting style, because there is no more perfect way of saying "thank you for saving me before, now let me save you too" than doing so in the other's language
