also this morning I woke up thinking about the concept of type 1 diabetic Shane
prefacing by saying I do have some experience with this as someone who has been dating a type 1 diabetic for nine years but like
Shane whose whole life is built on trying to retain some semblance of bodily autonomy, fighting for control over himself and the world around him while his own body works against him.....wading through years of shame from doctors, even when he trying his hardest to manage his glucose levels as a child, constantly being told he wasn't doing enough......but he has to learn to manage it he HAS to (if he wants to play hockey) and so it becomes a whole added layer of structure and control he has to maintain in order to do the thing he loves......an added layer of role model-ism too, the way he's uplifted as a hero when he goes pro, proving you can do anything even with this disease......making the weight of his secret feel that much heavier..... I imagine when Ilya comes into his life it throws so many things off at first..... he goes low for the first time in years in front of Ilya and Ilya has no idea what to do..... or imagine Ilya seeing the Dexcom in the showers and then tracing his fingers over it the first time they hook up.... Ilya's heart hurts imagining young Shane, age six, blacking out a birthday party the day he was diagnosed.....Shane's a little embarrassed....he doesn't want his disease to define him and he doesn't want to appear weak or out of control.....but of course we know how freeing it is for him to let Ilya take control....even for just the fleeting moments they're together......

The thing that Shane fully did not consider when he made the plan to start a Mental Health charity and present it as a Cause they Both Love that brought them together, is that, especially after Ilya talks publicly about his mom, people are going to start wondering why Shane Hollander is so passionate about mental health and suicide prevention. And Shane is probably unaware of most of the speculation. It’s like a year in and he’s just so focused on how The Plan is going great and then Hayden says something about how Shane can always talk to him if he’s feeling depressed. And then Shane has to suddenly confront the idea that he also possesses Mental Health, a thing he has been studiously ignoring for his whole entire life.
