Getting job centre people to take part in documentary

When I was outside the job centre taking photographs of people I approached them to see if they would like to take part in documentary photography. I got several yes but only one person in the end after emailing them took Part It was useful however as it allowed me to work with someone who I wouldn't usually see.

challenging my ethics

The ethics of what I was doing on the uncommon nonsense brief were challenged by fellow practioner Laura Dove , who felt that any form of photoshopping was wrong as it led to a misrepresentation of women. I discussed this with Laura and I felt that she had a point but that by its very nature this photography was a misrepresentation of women as the model had spent nearly two hours in make up and hair therefore it could never be a true representation of a women. I agree with Laura but I also thing you can't change everything with one photoshoot you have to chip away gradually and this was a start with alternative models.

My Role in the Exhibition

The Development of my role in the exhibition has been a gradual one although I have been involved in the planning from the beginning it wasn't until real issues started developing that I took a lead role in the planning and development 

initially I helped to decide the conept with a large group of year 3s once the concept had been developed the issues was left for a small amount of time. I was asked to put together a group of people who would be keen to be involved in the building and design. 

I contacted people via a facebook group that had been designed for the exhibition and had replies. Once I had replies from individuals I organised an initial meeting with everyone to go over what needed to be done. I delegated jobs to people and myself. 

I became point of contact for people who needed larger than usual pieces for the exhibition and found that people approached me with any inquiries I needed 

I arranged for the removal of  the Mac equipment and the electical links and for the reinstallation of the Macs into the exhibtion 

When a problem occured that I could not deal with directly I contacted the appropriate person to help me deal with it. 

I took executive decisions on certain issues such as a student asking if they could remove work from the show after the opening night, which I suggested that it might be better to either not put the work into the show or find a print or perhaps not affix the wall or have it displayed on something less permanent. 

I have had to deal with enquires about larger objects about displaying show reel individually as well as organising the team.

Photo Etching

Applied light sensitive , photo etching paper to cleaned copper sheet 

left to cure - aided by application of heat gun 

printed designs onto a acetate and placing acetate over copper exposed in uv light box for 7 light units 

put copper into weak solution of sodium carbonate which removed exposed film leaving words behind 

re exposed copper in light box for 45 light units to harden blue film 

taped up edges of coper so they would not etch 

used stop out varnish to cover up bubbles in surface of photoetching film

put into ferric chloride for 4 hours

took of film and stop out varnish with concentrated solution of sodium carbonate 

used liver of sulphar to oxodise and darken copper 

used polishing wheel and rouge to polish copper

Meeting notes

1.     The Bird Houses will be ordered once Louise gets the go ahead from the college. Once these have been ordered we will let everyone know when they can come and pick up their bird boxes and we will provide days when they can be decorated in college. The bird boxes need to be finished and in at the latest by the 6th June.

  2.     During the meeting we discussed the possibility to using card birds to attach business card holders to the consensus at the briefing that this was take away from people work as they were quite large. In place of this we will have plastic business card holders that are attached to writing provided by individual students. Louise will order business card holders which are only 50p each.

  3.     The exhibition will be tied into the bird them by having feathers bird foot prints dotted about the studio – probably on the floor – we’ll need someone to design this.

  4.     The community ‘corner’ will almost definitely be on  a bird table – no one objected to this. Emma and Kate will at some point pick up any leaflets that we don’t have however before that Emma is going to email the organisations and ask them to send things into the college.

  5.     Any big needs are being forwarded to Vicky by individual students however sooner to the time Vicky will arrange for students to put a full colour visual proposal into her about how they want there allotted space to be used.

  6.     Paul needs to Email Emma a list of all organisations that we need info from.

  7.     David asked that everyone provide some photos of himself or herself out working in the community. Paul will arrange for a space in the same Google drive that was used for year book photos.

  8.     We all need to look at different bird tables.

  9.     There are a majority of people who are Keen to have a shop within the exhibition this can be part minded by the people who are doing the invigilation.

  10.  Graham is keen for somehow to involve bird attracting within the exhibition it was suggested a bird feeder or a bird house on the balcony. So we should look at bird feeders too

  11.  Emma Fish is a very busy girl so the next meeting will an evening one again so she can attend and take part.

  12.  As we have three illustrators on the team it would be nice if you could each have a go of coming up with  designs for bird foot prints and feathers that could be used in the show, they’ll need to be something that can be small or big I think.

Screen Printing Process

divide photo in photoshop to cmyk 

print out a version of each colour set to a specific standard 

make screen by coating drying then exposing 

lay printed images on ultraviolet light bed place screen on top  

make register marks for image to keep each image on paper in same place 

print cyan 

then print magenta onto plasitc 

place over print to line up register exactly 

then print

Everythings the same nothing changes

The work that I've been doing with signs and people is very similar to a lot of things that are out there, this isn't because I've seen it and copied it, its just a place I've arrived to by natural progression. Why is this? Why not more original more abstract and I think its this. The format works really well it does the job its supposed to do it allows you to see the thoughts of the person take those words and then apply them to a person and try to work out how the two fit together, if they do fit together it gives the information to see that person in a new light. The pushing in this project comes from the various positive angles that are merged together. Its those that work together taking professional images that go alongside personal photography and the written word. Why change what works sometimes the recognisable format produces comfort and  helps people see what they need to see.

Uncommon Nonsense Second studio shoot

photographed from My camera to capture one , really useful 

no props this time but I decided to go for a 1950s movie starlet type look 

MUA took forever! so had only an hour to shoot the two dresses in. 

Gemma also took ill during the shoot so had to put it off. 

Post production was hard but managed to get it done over the weekend 

really pleased with images

First Photography shoot Uncommon Nonsense

- talked to Gemma about requirements for show

- planning balloons 

Booked the studio for two sessions to allow for makeup and lighting set up - planning candy floss 

- unable to find balloons trolled last minute round shops but decided too expensive for what we wanted- bought a packet of black balloons just in case

-Gemma wanted a shot of models lying on candy floss I had to make candy floss using pillow stuffing and pink hair dye spray

Made a checkered floor for shots 

Gemma bought props for table. 

Long list of shots from Gemma exactly what she wanted and how she wanted to do it. This helped but also a very tight fit 

choreographed the shoot as it was tight advised who to do what when.
