Hello, people who for some reason follow me here (and others who might see this) 👋👋 I have abandoned you all... I'm so sorry. But! Today is my second anniversary with Leona, so I thought I might as well come here to share some stuff with y'all. For more things, you can go check my Twitter (same handle as here, onleastorm). Below I'll share some pictures of the date (😳) I had with my Leoplushies, and below the cut I'll add a letter I wrote for him, just in case someone wants to read it too.

On this same day, 2 years ago, I saw you for the first time. I've never believed in love at first sight, but with you I felt something I had never experienced before.

It's not an exaggeration. From that moment, I immediately knew you'd become important in my life. Maybe too important. That's why I try avoiding getting invested for some months — I knew that, the moment I let you, you'd take over my life and change it completely.

But the feelings that were starting to form inside me were driving me too insane to ignore. So in the end, I decided to surrender... And give myself fully to you. And just like I suspected, you became the most important aspect of my life.

I think that, at this point, everything I do is either for or because of you. In my darkest times, my mind immediately goes to you for strength. When I'm happy, I think of you. I get motivation to do certain things thanks to your presence. I find you in even the tiniest of details. And I have the desire to support you in every way possible, expressing my love through these acts of pure gratitude for your existence.

Simply put, I love you. Even more than I've loved anyone else before. One could even say I've learnt new things I didn't completely understand about love because of you. And all of this started a fateful day, exactly two years ago.

Last year, I wasn't able to make a proper gift for this date, and that made me feel extremely guilty. However, something incredible happened: exactly 30 minutes before the banner of your Spelldrive Uniform card ended, when I had almost given up all hope, your voice invaded my ears and your image flooded my screen. At that moment, and even looking back at it, I can't help but feel like it was a message from you... Somehow. Or perhaps, it was the universe acknowledging my unyielding love for you. It truly felt magical, happening right as our anniversary was starting, just one hour after the clock struck midnight. Oh, how lucky I felt... It was as if you were telling me you loved me too, and to not worry about such things. “You really thought I wasn't comin' today?”, or something like that. I wasn't able to plan anything back then, but you sure did. And I'll forever thank you for that.

The point is that... This year, I didn't want to come here empty-handed. I wasn't able to draw a full piece myself, but I have one handmade gift for you, as well as three pieces made by lovely artists. Words, gifts, art or any action might never be enough. But with these gifts, I intend to commemorate the growth of the feelings I harbor for you. The most prominent one being, of course, love.

I love you, my Sun. My everything.

language observations in twst

Just a series of things I've noticed over the years! The topic was on my mind again since it came up recently in Little Big Adventure.

Twst seems to have its own set of languages which do not exist on Earth.

An unknown magical force automatically translates everything Yuu reads and hears into an Earth-based equivalent language so they can understand it. I assume that everything Yuu writes and/or says is also automatically translated into the Twst common tongue. This is hinted at in the light novel, but not in other adaptations.

Certain countries and/or areas in Twst seem to correlate with certain languages in the real world. For example, Ultramarine City has many Italian words, Fleur City/the City of Flowers has many French words, etc.

There's a common tongue (literally called Common) that is used to communicate across cultures and languages. (We don't have names for any other Twst language.) In most cases, the main cast and/or NPCs are speaking Common.

Speaking Cat seems to involve coordination of both vocalizations and hand/paw movements. We see examples of this in Azul (book 3) and in Ruggie's Dorm Uniform groovy.

Fae are able to infuse their voices with magic so that they can instantly communicate with other kinds of fae, even if their dialects or actual spoken languages are different.

An ancient nocturnal fae dialect sounds like animalistic growling and screeching.

Diurnal fae (at least the smaller pixies) speak in what sounds like tinkling bells to the human ear.

It's rare to find speakers of fae in modern day, but fae languages are considered proud and noble traditional languages. I have to wonder if this linguistic rarity is, in part, due to the colonization of Briarland. (That is to say, Briarland being conquered result in nocturnal fae culture and language being subdued and erased?)

It's difficult for the human ear to make sense of the nocturnal fae's language(s), as humans' hearing range is very narrow compared to otehr animals. It seems that just having some fae blood (like Sebek does) can allow you to detect minute sounds that a human wouldn't be able to.

Not all animal languages are made equal. Apparently, Mouse is more difficult because there is a significant size difference between humans and rodents. (Smaller voices are harder to hear, so it's hard for humans to detect subtle pronunciation.)

It sounds like Animal Linguistics increase in complexity as your year level increases. For example, third years like Trey know more Mouse than first and second years.

Chipmunk is also stated to be a difficult language, and, in retrospect, I wonder if that's because of the size difference thing.

Hedgehogs can understand mole, and I assume vice-versa. Ace states in his Dorm Uniform vignettes that these animals share an order (Eulipotyphla), so this seems to imply linguistic similarities in animals that share an order. Maybe they're even considered slightly different dialects?

According to Jack, not all beastmen speak and/or understand the language(s) of the animal they share DNA with.

Questions I have:

I wonder if it's ONLY arcane academies that teach Animal Linguistics, since it doesn't sound like you need to use magic to speak the language of an animal...

What languages does NRC teach, and to what extent??? In the real world, it can take one person several years to master a single language, yet it sounds like there is a single Animal Linguistics course that covers multiple languages. But surely that can't be the case???? You would never be able to get to even a basic conversational level considering the rich variety of animals you'd have to cover over the course of just a few years.

Does the bond between a mage and their familiar override the need to communicate using Animal Linguistics? I've never seen Trein communicate with Lucius in Cat, yet Lucius still seems to perfectly understand Trein. Does Lucius just understand him because they've been together since he was a kitten? Cuz the chipmunks don't seem to understand human Common at all, even though they appear to live in a tree in Foothill Town, constantly around humans.

If humans can learn animal languages, can animals learn human languages???

Do merfolk have their own languages which are hard for non-mer to learn because of how mers’ bodies have adapted to producing sounds underwater and with fish parts?

Do beastmen and fae have an easier time picking up Animal Linguistics since their hearing is more sensitive than that of a human?

New illustrations of kid!Ruggie and kid!Leona by Yana!! I believe it is in the third volume of the Episode of Savanaclaw manga as a bonus at the end of it.

According to the notes, Ruggie and other hyenas have entirely black hair in their childhood. I assume this is because real life hyenas have entirely black fur in their youth as well. I guess when they grow up, their hair/fur lightens, hence the gradient we see in Ruggie's current hairstyle. It looks like beastmen have more traits in common with their animal ancestors than we thought! (We've discussed how animal traits might manifest in beastfolk infants here.) The other note on Ruggie's illustration says that he wears someone else's hand-me-down clothes.

As for little Leona! It says he aspires to be the King of Beasts awww 🥺he used to be so full of hope... and the necklace he wears bears a scar-like pattern. It is apparently imbued with a protective spell, which was cast by Kifaji. We previously discussed what the purpose of the pendant the young royals of Sunset Savanna seem to wear (here!). According to the Magical Archives, Cheka's seems to have a tracking device but no protective spell is mentioned. Leona's meanwhile, has the protective spell but no tracking device mentioned. Are these customized based on the personality (and/or troublemaking level) of the royal in question? Is Cheka's pendant being more tech than magic an indication of the Sunset Savanna's advancements as they slowly industrialize while keeping mindful of nature? Or do the pendants just have both anyway and the design notes fail to convey that to us?

Cheka seems to sneak away from his retainers a lot, so I get why the GPS tracker might be needed for him. I have to wonder why Leona has a protective spell on his, though... Are there more people after him than Cheka, despite him being the second born prince and not the crown prince? And isn't Leona a mage powerful enough to be able to defend himself whereas Cheka doesn't seem to be able to defend himself and/or cast spells yet? Maybe Kifaji cast a protective spell on Leona's pendant to help Leona feel more like a normal kid? Like someone is out there hoping for his safety and worrying about him...

… But if Leona had that protective spell on him, how did he get his scar??? Because he doesn’t have it yet in the artwork there. Did he have the necklace off when it happened???

HI! do you think nrc students have to pay a tuition to stay there? I can't imagine Ruggie paying to stay there but it's unlikely a prestigious school wouldn't ask money

Across all the adaptations of Twst, there has never been mention of a tuition for Night Raven College.

We don’t know if students pay for their dorm rooms. It’s also not clear whether students pay for their school supplies, but I’d assume they do for the basics (pencils, notebooks) but have options for necessities (you can probably loan textbooks out from the library, use school-provided lab equipment, etc.).

We know that food in the cafeteria is served buffet-style and is all-you-can-eat. However, certain “extra” items and fancier foods do cost money.

One set of the various school uniforms are free. Replacements will cost you.

These details are mentioned by Ruggie in his book 7 dream.

Students must also pay for their transportation costs, like the bus that takes them to Foothill Town. (Ruggie mentions paying “bus fare” in Leona’s Liongarb vignettes.)

And, of course, the Mostro Lounge and Sam’s Mystery Shop aren’t free. If you want to eat at Octavinelle and/or shop, that’s coming straight out of your own wallet.

Now, back to the topic of tuition.

It’s entirely possible that low income students like Ruggie and Deuce are on academic scholarships. However, I don’t think this is likely because Ruggie and Deuce either had zero formal schooling or awful grades prior to NRC. In fact, Deuce is currently still having academic troubles. (Ruggie’s about average now.)

Seeing as how NRC seems to provide students with the necessities for them to have a regular life at school and how they honor a 500 year old enrollment invitation (for Lilia), I think it’s a situation where NRC welcomes anyone so long as they have the aptitude to be a great mage. If this is the case, then your academic background and socioeconomic status wouldn’t matter much, it would all come down to the inherent magic you were born with.

NRC has other methods of getting money, so I think they could still operate without asking every single student to pay up. They’re a famous school; surely they could get donations from the organizations and companies they partner with for internships. Plenty of the families whose sons are enrolls at NRC are wealthy too, so they could donate as well. Or maybe they have some kind of program which automatically waives or lowers tuition for students whose total household income is below a certain threshold?? Anything's possible until Twst says otherwise.

Do you know how many rooms are in Ramshackle? Or least the ones mentioned? I’m trying to write a fanfic and I’ve seen mixed info whether Ramshackle has an attic and a washing machine (I know the loungewear vignettes showed the other dorms having washing machines, but idk for Ramshackle).

Hey, I don't know who needs to hear this, but you don't need to be 100% accurate or "true" to canon in your fan creations. Oftentimes canon doesn't offer sufficient information to cover all bases, so fans will have to fill in the gaps with their own headcanons eventually. You may see "mixed info" from other fans because it's completely normal for people to use their own headcanons to fill in for missing information. (There are other reasons to not follow canon too!! Maybe you want to come up with your own variant on the canon because you disagree with what canon states, maybe you want to explore another interpretation, maybe you just want to be silly!) Fandom can be transformative, and that's part of what's fun about it.

Really specific details like how many rooms there are in Ramshackle are not known and likely will never be known. We're limited only to what we see through limited assets, dialogue, and circumstantial lore. For example, we have only have backgrounds for only 4 interior Ramshackle locations: the entrance/foyer, a hallway, the lounge, and Yuu + Grim's room. We know through character dialogue + additional materials (manga, light novel, etc.) that there is a kitchen, a bathroom, and a guest room (which was later added on as a new gameplay mode). Then we can assume there's a washroom (with laundry machines and dryers), since Ramshackle used to be a dorm and all dormitories come with their own washrooms.

We don't know much beyond that. It's possible that Ramshackle has its own unique rooms and fixtures, like how Pomefiore has a ballroom and attic lab or Heartslabyul has the rose maze, but if those exist then we don't have that knowledge. Looks like there could be an attic up there since there's dormers (those sections that protrude out from a slope roof) present, so interpret that how you will.

Lowkey dont like it when ppl think the boys are helpless without magic like as in they can't do basic stuff without it

I do feel like I sometimes see Twsties acting as if the world is over if the boys lost magic or they would struggle without it. Everyone was really losing their minds over this back in GloMasq, and I think that's because fans assumed that most of the population are capable of magic or that their societies heavily rely on magic. This bias, of course, arises from most of our time being spent at NRC, an arcane academy. Fans likely extrapolated our experiences at NRC to the rest of Twisted Wonderland, not realizing that NRC is not the norm--it's an elite institution for a very small population.

90% of humans can’t use magic to begin with—and even within our magically gifted main cast, the vast majority of them don’t use magic flippantly or even that frequently. Most of the first years’ classes focus on magic theory, so they wouldn’t be casting spells left and right. Not even the third years are using magic for every little thing. For example, only a few students from our main cast of 22 (Leona, Jamil, Malleus) use magic to do their hair in the mornings. They have to be mindful of blot accumulation and have varied knowledge in the spells they can cast. Most people live relatively ordinary lives and do things by hand, not by magic.

I think the only species who would kind of have issues without magic are fae, but especially the sheltered fae prince Malleus. This is because fae are more magically inclined and heavily rely on magic for everyday tasks, such as flight for travel or fire magic for cooking. I think Lilia would be fine without his magic though, given that he has the life, war, and parenting experiences to help with life and survival skills. Malleus isn’t exactly entirely “helpless” without magic either; he has his brute physical strength. His primary weakness would come from not understanding how to do things servants typically handle or resolving issues (like the destroyed stage in book 5) without the instafix that is his magic.
