Help identifying the movie stars on Pope Ringo's robe
This image is from "Lisztomania" (1975), a bizarre acid-trip rock-opera biopic, about classical composer Franz Liszt. Roger Daltrey of "The Who" stars as Liszt, while Ringo Starr from the Beatles cameos as the Pope. Pope Ringo pays the womanizing musician a surprise visit while Liszt is in bed with a naked woman (Little Nell from "Rocky Horror Picture Show"). This scene is only the tip of the iceberg of the insanity that is "Lisztomania."
In the Director's commentary, Ken Russell says that the photos on Ringo's robe are of "movie stars." Russell says this is a homage, because the movies inspired him to convert to Catholicism. (Yes, a practicing Catholic convert made "Lisztomania.")
Unfortunately, Russell didn't elaborate on how the movies converted him, or who the specific stars in the photos are. Google Reverse-Image Search doesn't work, because the photos are still too blurry even in H.D. I can only make a guess at who a random photo is of, Google the actor, and search for a matching picture.
So far, I've only been able to identify one: Greta Garbo, on the bottom right (Ringo's left).
I believe that's Charlie Chaplin on his shoulder. This would make sense, since there's an entire scene earlier in the movie that homages Chaplin, implying that Russell is a fan. And in the commentary, Russell confirms that he loves Charlie Chaplin. If anyone can find the exact photo of Chaplin used, or correct me if it's actually someone else, please share.
Moving on, I'm 95% sure that's Katherine Hepburn on his back. But I can't find the exact photo on Google.
We see a few more stars, as Liszt kisses the Pope's holy cowboy boots.
I'm stumped on those two guys in the Arabian headgear. I Googled stills from "Lawrence of Arabia" (all of them), "The Thief of Baghdad," "The Mummy," "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy," and "Two Arabian Knights," and haven't found a match. I feel those two shouldn't be too hard to identify. I can see them clearly enough to make out their faces, I just don't recognize them. As for the picture above them and the one below them, I'm stumped.
The big color picture of the woman doing the jazz hands is...also a mystery. I searched Audrey Hepburn and Liza Minnelli, to no avail.
I don't know who the mustached sailor on the upper-right is. To the left of Jazz-Hands, under (probably) Chaplin, is an actress from the '20s or '30s. Possibly Clara Bow, or a young Mary Astor. The picture directly under her, I can't even make out. The trio on the bottom is also a mystery; I thought the Three Stooges at first, but seeing the picture from a different angle makes me think one or two of the figures may be women.
The man with the blond or light-brown hair, on the left, could be James Dean or Burt Lancaster. Over on the right is a couple from what looks like a '20s or '30s movie.
It's a long shot, but maybe someone can recognize a famous photo even at this distance.
I'm surprised not to see Marilyn Monroe, because Ken Russell seems to be a big fan of hers. Maybe she is in there and I missed it. Naturally, I'm also a tad disappointed that an eccentric like Ken Russell doesn't seem interested in Peter Lorre. But again, maybe he's in there too.

halbstarke!!!!!!!!!!!!! (i canโt remember the right artikel for the life of me sorry)
the subculture is very much mid-late 50s and 60s, post-Dean era and spread around germany, austria and switzerland, inspired by the american rock nโ roll scene
as far as i know, they were mostly so calledย โfashion gangsโ and werenโt exactly actively criminal or quasi-legal (in how they act, that is) unlike some of their american cousins - though it wouldnโt be a subculture of outcasted teens without dangerous behaviour -
โfashionโ truly is the word here
these guys (and girls:}) were all about some crazy vaguely american-inspired clothing modifications -ย
leopard print and hot pink??? sure!!!!! why not!!!!! (imagine hopping a fence and that horseshoe flying directly into ur dick and balls)
nuts and bolts in place of a fly????? of course!!!!!
giant elvis belt the size of your entire midriff?????? obviously!! whatโs more hip than that!
their outrageous fashion choices and general tough attitude had earned theย โhalf-strengthsโ (not entirely sure what thatโs supposed to mean) a reputation as kids you generally donโt wanna be around, though i am most captivated by their extremely bold choices in appearance. i could talk about fashion and gender expression and all that in these subcultures for literal hours haha
whatโs even more cool about these photos is that they were taken byย Karlheinz Weinberger, a photographer that while may have been mostly unknown before his death, contributed to the european gay community with his work mosty consisting of homoerotic photographs of working class men
i found most of his work hereย and here
though a whole lot of these images were found on pinterest by associationย
his work can also be bought
i would absolutely love to provide a free source to look through his photography books but i genuenly have no idea how to get around paywalls
It happened again! More Little Mermaid/Grease shenanigans, this time with art by Steven Butler (Web of Spider-Man, Archie, Silver Sable, Disney Adventures) and colors by Jeremiah Skipper (Hawkman). The original black and white line art was done at the 2018 Michigan Comic Con two weeks ago, the colors just this past weekend.
Eventually, thereโs going to have to be a group shot where Ariel/Sandy is finally joined by all the Disney Pink Ladies. Itโs just a question of who would be Rizzo, Frenchy, Marty, and Jan. (OK, maybe not MartyโฆAuroraโs pitch-perfect for that role.) But for now, the fun continues with just Ariel/Sandy and Eric/Danny.
This remarkable fur-trimmed pink cape made its first known appearance in the 1954 film ๐๐ฆ๐ด๐ช๐ณรฉ๐ฆ, where the elegant Jean Simmons portrayed Desirรฉe Clary. ย
Three years later, this piece found its way onto the shoulders of Jayne Mansfield, who donned it as Rita Marlowe in the 1957 film
Fast forward to 1974, and the cape had yet another moment in the spotlight when it appeared on Sheila Allen as Paula Ramsay in the thrilling disaster film ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ ๐๐ฏ๐ง๐ฆ๐ณ๐ฏ๐ฐ. ย Want to learn more? Visit Bit.ly/Acces112 ย
TW: Human trafficking, SA, torture, discussion of scam farms
I see a whole bunch of people arguing that they would rather risk giving to a scammer than ignore someone's gofundme. I also see people saying things like "I can't believe some sick people are profiteering off genocide" and like, me neither, but I feel like you guys really don't understand who actually runs these kinds of scams and what they are.
Scams of noticeable scale-- like scam asks being sent from hundreds of accounts to every user on Tumblr!-- are typically related to organised crime in poor countries, not Susan from Milwaukee who wants a new coat and has no scruples. People get trafficked by gangs to scam farms in Asia and Africa where they're worked to the bone and tortured trying to get idiots in wealthy countries to part with their money. Genocide profiteering is pretty much the least evil thing these people do.
Here's a UN article on it. Obvious warnings for content related to human trafficking and SA.
Transnational crime syndicates based in Southeast Asia are fuelling the trafficking of people, either forcing them to commit crimes or for s
When you donate to a scammer, you fund these organisations and give them a reason to exist. It's possible some of the fundraisers are legit. I honestly find it unlikely given I'm not seeing any from any other countries where urgent fundraisers would seem to have great reason to exist but which haven't captured the same level of attention on Tumblr-- the number of Sudanese, Congolese, Ukrainian, Burmese or Uyghur fundraisers in my DMs is a fat 0. In any case, there are safer ways to help.
If you want to help (which is great!) you don't have to take the risk of paying for human trafficking. Donate to legitimate charities which have the resources to safely and effectively ensure the money and help is getting to the right people. Funding human trafficking rings in Myanmar is not a good risk to be taking while trying to help.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has caused immense suffering, with countless individuals displaced, harmed, and killed over the years. Tens
