Reflections, Thoughts, and What's Next?

It's been over a month since the launch of oneshot.exe, the brainchild of me and Chazzerbox (and by "brainchild", I really mean she did all the thinking and I did all the coding). Originally envisioned, and still considered, as an April Fools project, oneshot.exe has blown up to a degree I still cannot truly wrap my head around.

In fact, earlier today YouTuber Thafnine uploaded a playthrough of various Creepypasta games to his second channel T9. Bundled amongst those games? oneshot.exe.

Absolutely unreal to see it come this far. By this far I mean reaching across into the United Kingdom.

It's just so... insane to me how far it's come. Like, seriously??? What the hell?????

In the coming weeks, me and Chazzerbox are going to record a developer's commentary for oneshot.exe, giving insight and showing off just how much was actually intended and planned. For example: yes, cypher text is very "baby's first ARG". That was the point. And as an example of "behind-the-scenes fun fact"isms, the scream Cedric lets out at the end of the Inbetween segment is taken from the UK cult-classic TV show Utopia. Specifically, it's Wilson Wilson's from the end of Season 2 Episode 6. There are, fun fact, multiple versions taken from all over this scene. I'll share them with you right now, actually:

Reflection & Updates

It's been a few months since the release of the first OneShot: Red & Yellow demo. In that time, I've learnt and understood a lot. And as I was putting together a patches in-between work, I grew to understand exactly what went right and wrong with the mod.

First of all, unrelated, the OSRY Twitter Account has been rebranded to Brimrose Software. This rebrand only applies to that account, this Tumblr blog will be used solely for updates on OSRY. Whether or not a second blog for the studio or more individual blogs for other releases comes out is yet to be seen. But check it out!

Second of all, because I love doing the "first second third" structure for these posts, I plan on releasing the patch sometime soon. Whether or not "soon" means 5 months from now or tomorrow depends on a variety of things. I have university classes. But I'm not Thor, I'm not gonna keep making excuses to not work on my shit.

Third of all, there's something I am. Very excited to show you all.

Something that me and my lovely partner have been crafting. Together.

Very, very soon, you'll know what I mean. It'll be pretty funny, actually! Keep an eye out for that. And I mean that, I had a deadline and have actually completed the project ahead of it, so y'know.

And fourth of all: WHEN IS THE NEXT OSRY MAJOR UPDATE?

My approach to making OSRY was flawed. But I'm not throwing it away and starting over. I'm taking what I have and reworking it to be better and faster and simpler yet complex. So please! I will get this out! Shinix is taking like, 2 years to make UTRY's next update I Have Time.

State of the Mod - December 21st, 2025

Post release. Wow. I, uh, still can't believe we're here!

Since the launch of OneShot Red & Yellow's DEMO a week or so ago, I've learnt many things. One: apparently I am not a reliable enough playtester and can miss bugs that are realllyyyy apparent to others, and two: people like OSRY.

I am eternally grateful to everyone who's stuck by and who played the mod's demo. Genuinely. Thank you. Whether it was just reporting bugs or giving compliments, it all felt so, so surreal. So again, thank you.

Of course, my work's not done. It's never done, lol. So, what's next?

Well, first of all, I've been working on a patch for OSRY that should basicalllyyyyy iron out pretty much all the noticeable issues with the DEMO. It should also iron out any issues with gameplay flow and all. It will release sometime within this week.

Afterwards, I will be "hiatusing" for a short while. NOT LONG! Just a few weeks while I catch my breath. If you really want to know why,

SO. I am justttt relaxing for a bit. But that doesn't mean I will stop working on any OneShot related project. No. I have an idea for a smaller scale mod that I may or may not release, moreso just being created as an exercise and experiment with the engine and game as a whole. So look forward to that...? I guess? Idk.

Anyways.

The next DEMO will not take as long as The Barren's. What I've learnt is that I am one singular person and I can only do so much at once. I was trying to do EVERYTHING with the Barrens, including a new area, new secrets, new dialogue, more dialogue, another new area, and I ended up cutting back quite a bit. The Glen will be different. There will not be any new areas, rather it will focus entirely on building upon the dialogue of the Barrens.

As well as that, the Glen DEMO will/should clean up the Barrens as a whole, making it so neat and so so tidy. :D.

As well, there's the manner did i really use as well twice jesus of writing. I did something really stupid and crammed all of the script of The Barrens into multiple tabs of a Google Document. This, as it turns out, is not sustainable for long-term branching paths in dialogue. SO. I will be using a dedicated website for branching dialogue instead. Yay.

I will also probably rewrite all the dialogue again maybe idk.

That's about all I have to say. Except not, because I wanna take the time to thank people. Mhm. We're thanking people.

Beyond letting me use some of their mod's sprites for OSRY, they are also entirely responsible for why OSRY is so popular right now. Seriously, before any of this tweets on the OSRY account would average about 6ish likes. And not that I care about that stuff, but now they average around 8. BUT THE TRAILER GOT OVER 100. ONE HUNDRED???? AND THE ANNOUNCEMENT IS LIKE NEARLY AT 100????? Like that's INSANE. And I can really only thank Shibe for this. And... and Shinix too, I guess. She also. Retweeted it. OneShot: Red & Yellow | The Barrens Demo Trailer

Update

First and foremost: OSRY's Barrens DEMO will be releasing in December. That will happen, and will always happen. Expect a trailer very soon.

Secondly, as you may (or may not) be aware, it's been brought to light that an ex-member of the Undertale Yellow development team was a predator, and that several prominent developers were unfortunately defending them.

You might say that OSRY has nothing to do with UTY or it's development - and to an extent, yes. No UTY developers work on this mod. However, it's a part of the name. A core part of OSRY is it's relation to UTY.

UTY as a whole isn't bad because of this. But it's a personal thing: I don't feel comfortable at the moment continuing on with this. I don't like extending the work of people who acted like this. Call me morally ingenious or whatever, but this is a simple matter of my own moral compass.

OSRY is NOT cancelled. I don't think it ever will be. But development will halt for a while after the Barrens DEMO's release. Just while I decide what to do with it, whether it continues on as-is or becomes something else. I don't know. But I've put work into it, and I want to see some of that work come to light.

In the meantime, support those affected by this situation. Please. The situation is linked in full, and people need to see this.

I never planned on mentioning or bringing up any controversy at length on the OSRY account. I see a lot of people saying "The UTRY community is in SHAMBLES! First Shayy, now THIS?!". I think this is a bad faith way to look at this community as a whole. There is good and there is bad, and both need to be acknowledged. Bad people being outed continually does not mean the community as a whole is bad. Viewing these situations as JUST "Drama" is bad. These two situations just, unfortunately, happened to affect OSRY to some degree no matter how small.

What's important is we move on either way. The trailer, as mentioned, will drop soon. Then OSRY will follow within a week of that. Then, I don't know.

State of the Mod - October 31st, 2025

Happy Halloween! I really don't have much to share teaser-wise, since everything I've made I want YOU to experience for yourself. We are closer than ever to the release of our first DEMO, and I've already started thinking about what's beyond that.

Currently, we are testing porting OSRY itself to a new engine, a fork of the modified version of MKXP OneShot uses called "ModShot". This process sounds complicated and scary, and makes it seem like I'd have to rewrite so much stuff. The actual reality is that everything I've made stays intact, and is simply moved over. As far as I am aware, nothing should break. Quite the opposite in fact: it'll get way better.

...Supposedly.

I am not by any stretch of the imagination a proper "programmer". I am very good at bluffing my way into making stuff work, but the second you ask me to compile a GitHub repo I contemplate blowing my head off. So with that being said, this is a very hands on process that I pawned off to my buddy Nemgu to do all the work for me. Or at least most of it. So, thank him for that.

In other news, playtesting is set to begin sometime mid-November. Actual writing for most of the Barrens is pretty much finished (Implementation, on the other hand, is why the DEMO release is in December and not like, tomorrow). Part of this release has been learning to let my pseudo-perfectionism go and focus on what matters. At the very worst, we'll clean up stuff later.

Like I've said before, treat the Barrens DEMO like an IDEA of how the Barrens will play. And trust me, it is not indicative of how much progress we've (I've) made. And please lower your expectations please please pelase ealselpalpsalesa

In other news, if you (somehow) missed it - me and the OneTale team have sort of crossed paths. OneTale, if you are not aware, is a mod for Undertale that replaces Frisk with Niko (and does other things, but that's the main part). Basically - I wanted Undertale-like OneShot assets for something, I asked the team, and they gave me it. So say a very big thanks to them.

I also owe them thanks for giving the OSRY account it's second most popular tweet - the above gif of Niko looking up and down. So please, go check OneTale out. It's a very cool mod.

State of the Mod - October 13th, 2025

Hi gang!

First of all, big news! We, uh, actually got permission...?

Okay you might think that it's bad I've been operating without any ACTUAL permission from Shinix. But in my defense, I've been trying to contact her since July. And uh, apparently she doesn't check her DMs often!

State of the Mod - September 27th, 2025

I almost lost access to my PC. Thanks to a feature that forced me to change my password every month, I ended up sloppily entering one then forgetting what I actually entered.

If it wasn't for a spare USB and laptop, I might've lost most of the files for OSRY. Thankfully, we don't live in that timeline, so development continues as normal.

Look at these little gizmos and gadgets. How adorable.

Anyways, while I don't really want to share any big things, here's a small bit of concept art I drew for an upcoming room. The room turned out to be one of my favorites, and I cannot wait for you to reach it.

State of the Mod - August 31st, 2025

No, it's not cancelled.

Wow, haha. What do you mean it's August? And it's almost September? And I... I keep forgetting to work on the MOD????

Well, that's a slight over-exaggeration. Slight. As I have continued to state, and overstate, and over-overstate many many times, I have continually viewed OneShot: Red & Yellow as a passion project I work on from time to time when I feel like it.

But you know what I feel like now?

I *really* want this mod out.

SO. The important bit. I will be aiming to release a demo of the Barrens in December of this year. Will it be feature complete? No. Will it be a FULL showcase of everything I've worked on? No. It'll be a small taster of my vision, just to plod you guys on a little longer.

With that out of the way, what HAVE I been working on?

Well...

As hinted before, there's a new location to visit in the Barrens. Well, "a new location" implies there's not many little things scattered about. But that's neither here nor there. This place is optional, but it's really cool and please visit it please please it's not out of the way you'll find it normally I promiseeeeee.

New facesprites! If you, uh, somehow didn't see. Drawn graciously by my good friend siryhara. Check them out, their art is amazing and the backbone of this project.

That's about all I feel like showing you. "What?" I hear you cry. "That's barely anything!" I also hear you cry. Well, keep crying, because the majority of what I have is a surprise.
