Your time in the circus was... interesting, to say the least. You've been here for about a month now, or at least you think you have. Time moves strangely in this place of too bright colors and weird-looking people. You have been having a hard time adjusting to your avatar's body. Staring down at your hands, you know they are yours, but it just doesn't look like it.
"What are you doing?" A soft voice to your left asks you.
You are lying on your bed, specially made for you by Caine. Turning your head on your pillow, you see 3 of your newfound friends sitting on your floor, cards in their hands. Ribbit, an anthropomorphic frog, stares at you. Their eyes half-lidded, and the corners of their lips smirked up.
"Just... checking myself out." You say shyly, resting your arms across your body.
"You can always come over, I'll check it out for you," Ribbit says, giving you a wink. Jax, a purple rabbit, shoves them roughly, letting them know they should stop flirting and play their turn.
This comment makes you blush immediately. Thank God your room is a bit dim, so they don't notice. Truth be told, you've got a huge crush on the frog. You don't even know when it started; it kind of hit you like a train. Is it even possible to have relationships in this place? Friends, yeah, of course, but relationships? No way, right?
The green frog was your first friend here in the circus. They welcomed you to their group of misfits in this digital purgatory. They even helped you out when it came to you freaking out about never leaving or not knowing why everything was happening; they were your escape, a slice of reality.
Turning your head back towards the group, you see that their game of Uno has ended, with Ribbit doing a victory dance. Jax throws his cards on the ground, groaning in irritation.
"How do you always win!? You keep cheating!" He accuses the frog.
Ribbit does a fake gasp, pressing her hand against her chest. "Jax! I would never!" She says dramatically, lying back on your bed. You freeze watching the two bicker, and notice that Ribbit is inching closer and closer to you.
"Do you think I cheated my win?" She asks, laying her chin onto your chest, her big puppy-like eyes staring up at you.
All you can do is sputter out rambles of sound, not knowing what to say or even do. Before you can say anything, you're suddenly poofed into the big open layout of the circus. The harsh colors blind you for a moment before you realize you're not in your room. The hard floor replaces your comfortable bed, and the pressure of Ribbit on your chest weighs you down a bit more.
"What the h[#$%@] were you two doing?" Zoobles' voice rings in your ears.
"Oh... you know." Ribbit gives them a sultry response, kissing your cheek and climbing off you. They stick out their hand to help you up.
All you can do is stare at the hand after that interaction. Did she really just kiss you? This frog really knows how to play with your feelings without realizing it.
You grab hold of their hand and let them pull you up. You dust yourself off and rub the spot Ribbit had kissed you, still somehow feeling their lips on you. Letting go of your hand, she smiles and walks over to Jax, leaning against his side. A pang of jealousy hits you in the chest. Why? Why would you be jealous? You two weren't even dating, so what does it matter?
"Alrighty, my rubber baby buggy bumpers! I have a brand new adventure for you all!" Caine's voice takes you out of your trance. Oh right. The whole reason why you are here.
"Today you will be exploring a haunted house, trying to find an ancient artifact, but be warned, it might be haunted!" Caine says, almost over-explaining how haunted this place is gonna be. Great.
"I'm sitting this one out," Zooble says, crossing their arms and starting to strut away.
"WAIT! You will need to be in pairs! You have to come so it's even!" Caine says before opening the floor underneath Zooble. A yell follows them when the floor opens up and then closes. He kindly opens a portal for the rest of us and pushes us all in.
Staring up at the dark, looming house, a chill runs down your spine. Jeez, why did Caine need to make this so creepy? The rain roared in your ears and pounded the side of the house. Stepping onto the porch and out of the rain, you wrap your arms around yourself, shivering.
Jax makes the first move, pushing the door open. The smell of mold and old wood floods your nose.
"This place looks... homey," Zooble says as Gangle wraps a hand like ribbon around their arm, her comedy mask broken.
As you all step into the house, the loud roaring of the rain turns into soft patters. You feel pressure on your back, and as arms snake around your midsection. You freeze, looking at the lime-green arms around you.
"Uhm, Ribbit?" You ask, not turning your head to face them.
"What? You looked cold." They say coyly, a smirk gracing their beautiful features.
All you can do is look back at the group in front of you, trying to distract yourself from the idea that your crush is mentally torturing you.
"Alright, I guess this is where we split up," Ragatha speaks up. She stands close to Kinger, who seems oddly aware of everything that's going on. "Kinger and I will pair up."
Jax slings his arm around Kaufmo and Ribbit, which in turn, leans them more against you. You let out a puff of air at the extra weight on your back. "We four will explore together!" Jax says with a wide grin.
That leaves Zooble and Gangle together; they decide to take the attic. Kinger and Ragatha take the main floor and possibly the shed outside, and the four of you go to the basement. Kaufmo wrings his hands together, letting you know he's nervous.
Ribbit lets you go and links their arm with Jax's, pulling him along to the basement door. You watched the two bicker over who goes down first. The way they touch and poke each other is too... personal, for your liking, so you take it upon yourself to impress your crush.
"I'll go first." You say with mock confidence, as you stare down the dark staircase. For some reason, you decide to reach into your back pocket and pull out a flashlight. Thanks, Caine, you say to yourself.
The light flickers on, making the basement look ten times scarier. You start your way down the stairs, turning to the three looking down as you go. Ribbit is staring at you with a sly smile, oh lord. You feel your legs shake as you continue down, the others soon following.
Once you reach the bottom, the concrete floor scrapes under your feet. Wiping the flashlight back and forth, trying to take in your surroundings, the door at the top of the stairs slams shut, making you all jump. Awesome.
A gentle hand drags down your back and rests on your hip, "Nice job taking initiative. I knew you had it in you." Ribbits' words make your heart flutter.
"Uh, thanks." You say shyly.
Jax takes the flashlight from your hands and points it at a doorway. "Come on, Kaufy! We are going this way!" Jax says, grabbing onto the clown's large sleeve, pulling him to the open door.
"Wait, Jax, that's our only light!" You call out, but he's already gone.
You let out a heavy sigh as you are plunged into darkness, it taking a moment for your eyes to adjust. As you look around, you feel the hand on your hip gently drag you back. "Come on, there's another room over here," Ribbit says softly.
You follow their words blindly, moving robotically. You both walk into a room, fiddling around, and you find a light switch, flicking it on. The room is illuminated in a dull orange hue; clearly, the light hasn't been used in some time.
The room looks like an office, which is weird considering it's in the basement. There's a large desk and chair in the middle of the room with bookshelves behind it and a large chest off to the side. Ribbit waltzes around the desk and plops down into the chair, sighing contentedly. They look so cool, so unbothered. You, on the other hand, had so many questions.
Walking over to the bookshelf, you examine the spines of the books. You feel eyes on you as you do so. Ribbit is staring at you intently.
You hear the chair's wheels roll back as Ribbit stands; she comes extremely close to you. She backs you against the bookshelf, her chest pressing against yours, caging you in.
"You look so cute playing detective." She says, leaning down to your ear.
All you can do is swallow loudly. What are they doing? You ask yourself, almost thinking this is her coming onto you, but that thought shakes out of your head. She's this way with everyone; this isn't anything to you.
Their big eyes stare down at you, then something catches their eye. Squinting, she reaches her hand up and pulls a book, which in turn opens the bookshelf behind you.
It startles you forward into the frog more, feeling the way the shelf moved against your back. The door opens to a long, dark hallway, but another room at the end of it. Ribbit smirks down at you as you are willingly pressed against them. Realizing how you look right now, you pull away and let out an awkward cough.
"Sorry." You manage as you start down the hallway. You miss the way Ribbit furrows her eyebrows. She has been trying to flirt with you this whole time, and you just seem so uninterested. Is she trying too hard? They follow after you, huffing with frustration.
You both make it to the new room but realize there's no light switch.
"S[#$%@]." You say as you bump into what seems to be a cold metal table.
"You ok?" Ribbit's voice is close behind you.
You nod, then realize that they can't see that in the dark room. "Y-Yeah, I'm fine."
You begin feeling your way around the room, inspecting every crack and cranny. You hear Ribbit doing the same on the other side of the room.
"What are we even looking for?" She asks, tossing something to the ground.
You let out a hum of 'I don't know' and continue on. While you are fiddling with what feels like a tool of some sort, hands find your hips. You freeze up once again at the sudden interaction. It's becoming too much. You can't take it.
You pull away harshly from the hands. "Ribbit, listen," You start as you back up, your butt hitting the metal table in the middle of the room. You hear them coming closer and closer to you, but you can't move.
"You don't understand what you're doing to me." You say embarrassed.
"Oh, I think I know." She says, you can hear the smirk in her voice.
This makes you groan in frustration. "No, stop it. You don't understand that what you're doing makes me feel-" You cut yourself off with an angry huff.
You hear Ribbit stop moving in the darkness. "Am I making you uncomfortable?" They are almost guilty.
You shake your head. "No, the opposite, actually, but that's the thing. This flirting makes me feel... good, but I know you don't have any feelings for me, so please just stop." You almost beg her to go easy on your aching heart.
You don't hear anything for a moment, fearing she left you in the dark. You reach out a hand, and it presses against her chest. She's extremely close in front of you. They take your hand and press the palm against their lips. The feeling causes you to jump.
"How dare you assume how I feel?" She says, almost angry, like she can't fathom that you think this way about her.
"W-What?" You ask dumbly.
Letting go of your hand, she slammed her hands onto the metal table with a loud bang, caging you in between her body and the table. The noise makes you jump, your heart beating loudly in your ears.
"I've been flirting with you since you got here, hoping you'd take the hint." They say their breath is warm on your lips. You two were so close... wait, hint?
"Hint?" You feel like a complete idiot right now.
"Yes, hint. I've wanted you since you got here, that's why I've been flirting." She says smugly now.
This confession makes you short-circuit.
"What? But you are like this with everyone!" You exclaim.
"No I'm not! I'm only like this with you because I want only you!" She shouts.
Oh.
Oh.
This causes you to let out a breathy laugh.
"Are you laughing?" She asks, embarrassed.
"No! I'm laughing at myself for being such an idiot," You say, leaning your face in your hands. "I wish I could see your face. To see if you're being serious."
She drags her hands to your wrists, pulling them from your face. "I have a better idea." She says softly before pressing her lips against yours.
The feeling is electrifying, like taking a breath of fresh air. Their lips are soft and taste of caramel green apples. She presses you more against the table, leaning you back as you lie against it. They deepen the kiss, once you wrap your arms around her neck, dragging a quiet moan from you.
When you moan, she slips her frog-like tongue into your mouth. The feeling is strange but not unwelcome.
The tongue slides around, exploring your mouth entirely. When she pulls away, there is a string of saliva connecting your lips together.
"F[#$%@]." She lets out breathy huffs of air as you both try to catch your breath.
All you can do is hum in agreement. You try going back in for more, but a loud bang snaps you both out of your daze. Ribbit stands protectively in front of you, holding onto your hand. It came from the room you were previously in.
You both hear Jax calling out for both of you, Ribbit pulls away a bit allowing you to hop of the table. Letting out a sigh of relief, you begin down the dark hallway. Ribbit never lets go of your hand, feeling your rapid heartbeat.
"Don't worry, I'll protect you in this place. Just stay with me, okay?" She says with a stupid smirk.
"Yeah. Okay." All you can do is grin at her, completely amazed that she has the same feelings you have had this whole time.
Once you make it back to the room, Jax has a hand on his hip, looking between the two of you.
"What happened in there?" He asks, smirking, already knowing the answer.
You both look away from the purple rabbit shyly.
"Jesus, finally you two kissed, come on, Zooble found the thing we need to get out of here." Jax turns and heads back to the stairs.
You look at Ribbit as she pulls your hand up, pressing a gentle kiss against it and pulling you along.
Things are different now, but in a very good way.
