ABOUT ME:

I’m leek and I’m a former art student who just creates casually now! This is a safe space and I love chatting 📢 feel free to ask me anything!

My main fandom at the moment is transformers! Most of the time I’m posting my own characters though. Currently based on the east coast in the US, I have a lot of interests including my dog, D&D, art history, collecting, traveling, and cooking. I currently work in furniture manufacturing data for a company rhyming with killer mole (this is a busy job so sometimes art posting is slow). I mainly post here and on instagram! Next time try using FreetaxUSA! Thats what me and my family use to file every year, and it's never costed a penny to do. They're a lot more reliable than the paid sites imo

Yup 🙏 if you see my follow up, freetaxusa is what I ended up going with. People should not be afraid to check other places. Again, the IRS has a whole list of partners who will help you for free or cheap

Please explain because I was thinking of using TurboTax to do my taxes so I’m genuinely curious

I went to file my taxes. My taxes this year are much simpler than last year, so I figured I'd just do it quick on TurboTax ....

Big mistake apparently

I only had one special circumstance this year, and that was that I moved. I knew I would have to pay tax in two states. However, TurboTax ended up charging me $247 to do my taxes.

This included:

-a $69 fee to upgrade because I have an HSA (with no new contributions). That was apparently too difficult for them to handle

-Fees for filing my state taxes ($150)

-plus an extra fee just because 🙃

I'm going to tell you right now, if a tax site wants to charge that much to file your taxes, it is a scam!! I went through two other sites and finally found one where I could file, and it only charged $30.50, $15 for each state filing. The IRS has a list of free/cheap softwares that you can use. I used freetaxusa and the process was even simpler than turbotax

You can find a full list of irs partners here!! Do not pay more than you need to in order to do your taxes

*Editing to note that TurboTax is not even on this list! They WILL charge for whatever they can!

Adding a note that they added an additional "pay for TurboTax" option that was $40. This is also AFTER using a discount code. You should not have to pay this much to file your taxes

I SWEAR I'm going to get back into posting art, but just dropping an artist tip!

I think with beginners, there's a lot of focus on materials instead of techniques. I just want to say that a certain brush will not elevate your work to the level you think! It's the work you do with a brush. I know artists (both baby and intermediate) ask other artists they like the style of for their brushes, but it's not a guarantee it will work for you. So here's a couple tips for brushes!

1. Most artists use the same three brushes for everything. I pick brushes based on my style, but mostly for convenience! I like a lot of taper with pressure and little to no stabilizing (I've spent years building up the skills for steady lines, and artificial stabilizing will never look the way I want). This isn't going to work for everyone! In addition, there is zero difference between my coloring and lining brushes. It is all the same brush. I have only two main brushes and I use them for 85% of my work

2. Keep your style in mind! Don't do line work? A fine brush with taper probably isn't going to help you, even if you like how it looks. I love textured brushes! But they rarely work with my style. Find a way to incorporate them instead of modifying your style around them.

3. Materials DO NOT MATTER! paint is paint is paint. Start with easy and cheap, because you'll often find you actually don't want to make art that way. Hone your skills before increasing the value of your materials. There's no point in buying brush packs without even knowing what kinds of brushes you like using!

4. Biggest one for me: your style will always change and evolve! Even if you don't notice you're doing anything differently, it will change. My style now is different from my style five years ago, but it still shares similarities! My materials are exactly the same, it's just that my skills have improved. Other artists have completely different experiences, levels of skill, and work they put in. Don't expect you'll turn into them because you use their brushes!

As always I am happy to share my processes, but keep in mind that you should do what works best for you. My workflow is made purely from what I enjoy doing, and what is easiest for me to do. Everyone will have different parts of the process that they prefer. Art is not one size fits all, you shouldn't feel like you need to change your style because you like someone else's more. Just draw how you want to draw!
