Day 8: favourite S5 moment - Daenerys becomes a dragon rider

I've been thinking a lot about why Game of Thrones seemed to hate Dany's storyline yet used her as the face of its marketing. Misogyny and the sexualisation of Emilia Clarke is probably the main reason for the latter, but I think the whole thing has to do with the fact that the show seems to have a fundamental misunderstanding of the genre(s) that it was supposed to adapt.

A Song of Ice and Fire is a high-fantasy book series with significant elements of political drama. Game of Thrones reversed this, creating a political drama/political thriller TV series with significant high fantasy elements.

In the books, the high fantasy is the most explicit in Bran, Dany, and Jon's storylines. BUT, every other POV character remains incredibly aware of the world that they are living in. GRRM's worldbuilding is one of the greatest strengths of ASOIAF, and it is unending. Every single chapter tells us a little more about the world that these characters live in. It is the same world as Valyria, and the Children of the Forest, and Asshai and all the mysteries of Essos. A world with magic at its core (the characters themselves may not be aware of this, but the writing in their chapters makes it unforgettable for the readers). Daenerys hatching her dragons, the dead rising beyond the all, Bran's interactions with the three-eyed raven -- these aren't side plots to the central conflict of the Iron Throne. Without these, there is no ASOIAF. You'd think this would be obvious to the showrunners, but evidently not. We see the fruits of this attitude in the way that they kill off two of Dany's dragons in the span of 5 episodes, ignore Bran for an entire season, and have the 'Long Night' be a single (albeit long, I guess) episode.

Back to the point of Dany -- the 'problem' with her is that she is one of the more obvious protagonists of ASOIAF (like Jon and Tyrion). So they couldn't shove her to the side like they eventually did with Bran. She was also incredibly cool, and very very easy to sexualise. They needed her on screen for viewership, if nothing else. But take away the magical elements from Dany's story (her visions in the House of the Undying, her dragon dreams, etc.), and you are left with a pretty flat character that has unclear direction. So they played up her sexualisation. And for simplicity's sake (and implicit racism in dealing with Essos as a location), they played down the intricacies of the politics of her storyline. All of this resulted in reducing her to a subversion of a messianic figure, and this was a character that, in the end, had no proper place in the political drama that was Game of Thrones.
