Campaign for Orlando victims is GoFundMe’s most successful ever

Equality Florida, an organization advocating for LGBT rights in the state, showed its support by setting up a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the families of the victims. As of this morning, it became the fastest GoFundMe to reach $1 million.

And now it also appears to be the most successful GoFundMe campaign ever. As of publication, the campaign has raised more than $2 million for the victims’ families, just over what was previously listed as GoFundMe’s most funded campaign. 

If you wish to help, it’s not too late to donate. Equality Florida writes on the page, “Every penny raised will be distributed directly to the victims and their families.”

To Pulse, With Love

My city. My club. My people. I’ve been sitting here trying to formulate words for the horrible tragedy that occurred at Pulse last night. The deadliest mass shooting in US history.

Post after post and article after article scream it in my face and I still have trouble believing it’s real. It could’ve been me. I used to perform there. I still go there from time to time. It is people I know that are dead. LGBTQA people. All of them. You want to call it terrorism? ISIS? Fuck you. 

This was a mass slaughter of LGBTQA people in an Orlando LGBTQA nightclub because a man named Omar saw two men kissing and couldn’t handle it. I don’t care where he’s from or what religion he claimed to be a part of, THIS IS A HATE CRIME.

Today, wherever you’re from, Orlando is your city, too. It’s your club. It’s your people. Spread the word, donate blood if you can, be vocal, get loud. THE DEADLIEST MASS SHOOTING IN US HISTORY IS AN LGBTQA HATE CRIME.

Don’t let anyone shut you up.

This isn’t just another shooting. 

This is now officially, with over 50 casualties, the worst mass shooting in United States history. And the fact that it took place at a gay club was not merely coincidence. This was not just another act of senseless violence in America. This was a hate crime. 

A man walked into a safe space for the LGBT community with an assault rifle and lined them up and slaughtered them. 

Don’t do what the media is inevitably going to do. Don’t erase where this happened and who this happened to.

When you make your statements for/against gun control, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the gunman’s reported religious beliefs, remember this was a hate crime. When your politicians make empty promises about changing the way things are, remember this was a hate crime. When you make your statements about the media’s coverage of this, remind everyone this was hate crime. 

Do not gloss over the identities of the victims. They were killed for them. This was a hate crime.
