Oona Patterson: Paper Artist

Oona Patterson is a London based paper cut artist who specialises in miniature sculptures made from books.

I made a tree out of paper. It’s about 6cm tall.

Is that a 5cm high Left4Dead scene out of paper? Of course!

A wave out of paper. There’s lots of sea creatures hidden in the water and a fishing boat at the top. One fisherman is catching fish whilst the other is being tempted overboard by a mermaid.

Star Princess

I was given a brief to make a sculpture similar in style to Ream but that included a dragon. My photography skills failed me on this one as there is a lot of details that I didn’t capture but hopefully you get the idea!

There is a story board that runs across the work and added little details that the viewer might not spot straight away. The story goes something like... the world is flooding. It has been raining non stop because the Moon is crying. She has lost her daughter and no one can find her, not even the wind dragon who has blown everywhere. Unknown to her, the daughter has fallen off the clouds and landed on the Earth. A fisherman and his wife find her, floating on a raft and (perhaps recognising her) let her have one of their little boats. She knows the way home, she has to catch a star and luckily she finds a fallen one. She climbs the mountain and uses the star to buy her access to a stairway to heaven at the top of which she is reunited with her mother.

Some of the other details include a hot air balloon, treasure chest, kite flying cloud people and star men fishing in the sky.

An Enquiry

This small tree made from Hume’s ‘Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding’ stands at only 20cm tall. The little fairies are hiding amongst the leaves, barely visible.
